From rwatkins at eosc.edu Mon May 3 10:02:48 2010 From: rwatkins at eosc.edu (Rhoda Watkins) Date: Mon, 03 May 2010 10:02:48 -0500 Subject: [Eoscstudents] Menu for Mon. May 3 No Grill Today Message-ID: <4BDEE598.6070600@eosc.edu> Hi folks, It's looking like we've got a great week ahead of us as far as the weather goes. That might not be a good thing since this is the kind of weather that really tempts you into playing hooky, and I know you've all got finals to prepare for. Don't slack off now! Mr. Hawthorne's retirement party last Friday was wonderful. Those Sullivan Hall people really know how to throw a party! They always have the BEST refreshments! (I need that Coffee Punch recipe!) It looked like there were quite a few people coming by to wish Maurice well in his new venture, sign his memory book, chat and share stories. Speaking of Mr. Hawthorne, I enjoyed his performance in the play Friday night portraying President Roosevelt, and it made me think that might be something fun for him to get involved with now that he won't be having classes to teach and papers to grade. Too bad we don't have plays more often, but I'm sure they come quite often enough for those involved in them. There's a lot of work involved in all aspects of these performances. "Annie" was a lot of fun. Those little girls, and all the rest of the cast and crew, did a great job! (I'm pretty sure there's not a person that saw it that wouldn't have taken little Molly, played by Kate Marshall, home with them. She definitely wouldn't have been an orphan long!) We had quite a few guests on campus last Friday and Saturday for a Grazing Conference in the Ballroom. I could tell the serious "grazing" was about to begin when I caught a whiff of charcoal smoke that afternoon and followed it to the front of the building where a whole group of fellows were getting ready to cook steaks for the attendees for dinner. Due to several employees being out due to illness, we will not be opening the Grill today. Our menu for today includes: Sweet and sour chicken Egg rolls Rice Oriental vegetables Corn Popcorn chicken French fries Hot rolls And for dessert, have a piece of Banana Split Cake. May 4 Message-ID: <4BE0348C.6070806@eosc.edu> Hi folks, I think I'm having flashbacks. I almost put April 4, then had to rethink it. This year is really flying by! My daughter went to her Junior Prom last weekend, and that's really hard for me to believe! The Employee Recognition Reception is today at 4:00 in the Ballroom. Wouldn't you know, everyone who has been here 5, 10, 15 or more years will be getting their pins today, and I will have been here 5 years in two more days! Talk about just missing the deadline. It's kind of like when I started school and you had to be 6 by November 1st. I missed it by 26 days! The Graduation Appreciation Luncheon is tomorrow, so all this year's graduates should plan on attending that at noon in the Ballroom. Thursday will be the Nurse's Pinning Ceremony and Reception, and finally Friday will be the Graduation Cookout and Graduation Ceremony! I think I get a touch of "Empty Nest Syndrome" every time we lose a batch of graduates, so I can just imagine how some of the teachers feel, after having spent much more time than I've gotten to with the students. Don't forget, today is the next to last Biggest Loser Weigh-in! Time to go make sure you're still on the right track! And if you're not, maybe you need to get on the track...the walking track, that is, and give it all you've got for one more week to turn this thing around! Our menu for today includes: Stew Pinto beans Cornbread Turnip greens Macaroni and cheese with little smokies Potato wedges And for dessert, have a piece of Chocolate Cake. Hope all of you will try to stop by the Snack n' Study as it is the last opportunity this semester to do a participation activity. Message-ID: <4BE1C993.8050901@eosc.edu> I want to thank everyone who helped to make our luncheon to honor our SSS graduates a success. Everything was so nice! Special thanks to Mildred and her crew. The food was awesome! (Especially the rolls --you guys make the best rolls!) Everything was so good. Also, my sincere thanks to Dr. Harrison who is always there for us whenever we need her. Every single time she comes through, and that is important! Thanks to Nikki and the McAlester folks, Steve Banker and Lisa Gray, for making a special effort to join us. I was happy to see Terry Haynes and Cheryl Wood-Myer there as well. They, and all the faculty, really support us in a most fundamental way. We couldn't function without the faculty, and the administration backing us. Donna Rice and Karen Clark often help us out with the information we need to keep our records on the students and the reporting we have to do. Mimi Kelly and the financial aid folks help us and our students so much! Mimi always helps me with determining who is eligible for Grant Aid from us, and Patricia and the other ladies in Financial Aid help us to keep records of students who are considered low income. That is a very important task since it is what helps us keep our objectives met. Actually, we have been very fortunate that several people, in most of the offices on campus, help us to reach objectives and maintain our funding. I don't want to forget Marci (who stepped in for Dr. Smith) and Rudy. Rudy definitely hears from us a lot, and he and his people always steps up to the plate for us, as they do for everyone on campus. I especially want to thank Dennis Meadows, our Teacher of the Year, Jason Willoughby, our Tutor of the Year, Mary Hope, our Professional Tutor on this campus, and Dr. Blanchard a wonderful volunteer who tutors our students at the McAlester Campus. He was a great surgeon, (I know this from first-hand experience) and he is an awesome tutor! I sure don't want to forget about Steve Akins and Kristen Turner. They took pictures for us. Another part of what we are supposed to do for our grant is to advertise and report when we have any activities involving SSS participants, and these two are invaluable to us. If you have supported our program--in any way--I want to thank you, and if I forgot to mention someone who was at our luncheon today, just know, that it is because I was so NERVOUS! Please forgive me, I'll probably remember after I hit send on this message. Congratulations Graduates! You've done good! May 6 Message-ID: <4BE2DA10.2050802@eosc.edu> Hi folks, I had an enjoyable day off yesterday, but am glad to be back. I hope things didn't get too wild with Anne Hester Brooks celebrating her birthday and Cinco de Mayo yesterday! At any rate, I hope she's finished whooping it up, as the Nursing Department will be keeping her very busy with their Pinning Ceremony and Reception today. Our Nursing Department is a wonderful asset to Eastern, and attracts many students to our campus. I was surprised to get my 5 year pin at the Employee Recognition ReceptionTuesday. Today is my actual 5 year hire date anniversary, and I'm still enjoying being here. I know that's just a drop in the bucket compared to Mrs. Duncan, Mr. Hawthorne, Joyce Bills and others' records, but I'm still proud of it anyway. You gotta start somewhere. Tomorrow in the Administration/Library Building, there will be a Silent Auction Bake Sale to benefit the upcoming Relay for Life. There will be a variety of tasty desserts available for you to bid on, so bring your mad money (and your sweet tooth) and come bid on your favorite temptation. (You don't have to eat the whole thing yourself. I'm sure co-workers or family members will be glad to help you if you're feeling guilty about having bought a whole cake or something.) And if you're thinking of getting into a healthier lifestyle, get on up to the Horticulture Department's Mother's Day/End of Season clearance sale tomorrow between 10:00 and 2:00, and get some tomato plants, or maybe some flowers for your yard. Then get out in the fresh air and sunshine and plant them. If you do it right, you could get some delicious tomatoes or beautiful blossoms to enjoy, and you'll get the satisfaction of knowing you grew them yourself. I've got to get up there and see if they have any tasty little cherry type tomatoes. Yummy! Due to tomorrow's graduation cookout and ceremony, the Cafeteria will close tomorrow after lunch so everyone can attend the cookout and get ready for graduation. Congratulations Graduates! Our menu for today includes: Spaghetti with meat sauce Green beans Broccoli cuts Bread sticks Or visit our Grill for a great sandwich. And for dessert, have a Brownie. Some places really got hammered, and we really don't need that. Sometimes I'm amazed that as often as we have tornadoes come through, there are not that many storm cellars. You'd think every home would have one, but I guess we're just too used to our wild weather. Today's the moment of truth for all the EOSC Biggest Loser participants. Everyone needs to show up for the final weigh-in. Then the totals can be calculated to determine who has done themselves the most good during the contest, and who will walk away with the big bucks, (not to mention bragging rights!) This is book buyback week in the bookstore, so when you're done absorbing all the knowledge you need to get through finals out of your textbooks, take them in to Ali and the crew for cash. Who can't use some of that? I'm planning some days off this week, so this may be my last chance to give this year's graduates my best wishes for their futures. I hope they all take what they've learned here at Eastern and make the most of it for themselves, their families and the world. Do great things and don't forget to come back and see us. Boy, did they go by fast! I came back yesterday, and spent the morning in the Customer Service Program, sponsored by Gear Up, and the afternoon trying to think of things to ask Mildred about before she left for her vacation. She will be off on vacation until June 1, so if you need to call us about anything, call my extension, 712, and I'll help you. We will be cooking off the Grill today, so if you need a burger, or other grilled sandwich, come on over. We'll be waiting to grill you up something tasty until 5:30. And we'll be open this weekend. Don't forget about the American Cancer Society Relay for Life tonight at the Wilburton High School Football Field. Come on out, make a donation, take a few laps for the cause, (and for your own good), and enjoy all the fun, games and music they have lined up to help keep it going all the way to daylight! Happy Birthday wishes go out to Alan Moss of the Physical Plant for this Sunday. He's trying to catch up with me, but I'm not going to let him. Have a great weekend, Rhoda :-) -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
