We will have lots of special visitors on campus today, just checking us out to see what it's like to attend Eastern, and their experiences today could possibly influence their decision to come here after they graduate, so be sure and help them have a great Eastern experience to remember. And here's hoping that many of them will come back next August as new Mountaineers! It's also the start of Homecoming Week, with lots of fun activities planned throughout the week, culminating in the big Homecoming celebration on Saturday, (the parade downtown, the tailgate party, the ball games, crowning of the king and queen, etc.) One of the first activities is a Frozen T-shirt contest today at 3:00 at the clock tower, (it says Watermelon Toss on the Eastern calendar, but that's been changed), and then a performance by magician, Daniel Martin, at 7:00 this evening in Mitchell Auditorium. That should be a lot of fun! I hope I get to come out for that and bring my daughter. She's informed me that she and her buddies will also be here for today's Mountaineer Monday activities. Happy Birthday wishes go out to Paula Ogden, of our custodial staff. I hope she really enjoys her special day. Our menu for today includes: Lasagna Baked potatoes Corn Black eyed peas Scandinavian blend vegetables Hot rolls And for dessert, have a piece of luscious Cheesecake. Have a great Mountaineer Monday, Rhoda :-) -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... We had record numbers with 425 Seniors and over 37 schools in attendance. That is a first for us in this event. The amphitheater was a sea of gold and blue bags with students taking full advantage of the browse session. The Ag Ambassadors did a great job with the swine, the Criminal Joes were teaching students about safe tactics, information was being shared about every department on campus with this group of students. Thank you Mildred and the entire cafeteria staff for making our box lunches and helping to move our lunch crowd through at a record pace with no complaints of long lines or food running out. I think the box lunches were a hit. Thank you to Basketball Coach Scott Edgar and the gentlemen from the Men's basketball team for showing up and introducing themselves and the Ladies as well. We are excited about this week and seeing our team play. We added another first and were able to experience Sound Sensations perform for the first time during this event. It was terrific to watch them perform their selection from "Glee" and be part of our Mountaineer Monday crowd. As always this day would not have gone so well had it not been for our student volunteers who were here bright and early to make certain tables were in place and covered, balloons were inflated and delivered and students were organized and helpful to their younger counterparts. Thanks you also to the Student Affairs staff and recruiters who were in this up to their necks from the very beginning and to my staff for working diligently to make this day a success. To everyone who manned a table or organized a class or activity so our visiting students could see Eastern as its finest, you succeeded mightily. I believe as we have seen with our increased enrollment that activities such as this, placed at the correct time of year, organized to our best advantage and undertaken and executed with positive attitudes and can-do philosophies do reap the benefit of students choosing this college over others. Thank you everyone. On to Homecoming 2010! HERO UP! -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Events for the day will be The Bottle Head Competition at 4 pm at the clock tower. If it is raining we will hold this in the ballroom. At 7 pm will be our traditional Mr. Eastern Pageant. As always this looks like it will be another highlight of the week and our students are using their creative and slightly devious minds to come up with unusual names and talents. At 9 pm the Goddard building will open for float building for the parade on Saturday. On Monday our students enjoyed a loud and boistrous round of the ever popular Frozen T-shirt contest. The winner was Cody Bone representing the Cheer Team. That's two in a row for the Cheer team in this competition having been the winners last year. At 7 pm students watched in wonder as magician Daniel Martin shocked them with terrific illusions and feats of magic. He was so popular that his autograph session lasted for over 30 minutes. Thanks Daniel, it was great having you back with us again. Come on out and enjoy Homecoming 2010. Remember Homecoming T-shirts are available while sizes and t-shirts last for $10.00 in the Student Services office and Homecoming Mums are also for sale at $20.00. Please don't forget to go cast your vote today for Governor and various other offices that are up for grabs, along with 11 state questions. They say that in a democracy, the majority rules, but really it's only the minority who bother to go vote who decide most of our important issues. Be a part of that group. Let's turn that minority into the majority and let our voices be heard. Our opinions do matter. Even one vote can make a big difference, so make sure your vote counts. Anyone who missed the magic show with Daniel Martin last night, missed a great time! He performed several unbelievable and unexplainable feats of magic, including escaping from a tightly fastened straightjacket, right in front of the astonished faces (or even behind the backs) of some of Eastern's students. This evening's special Homecoming activity will be the ever popular, always hysterical, and often raunchy, Mr. Eastern contest, where we'll get to see some of Eastern's finest examples of manhood transformed into beautiful(?), talented(??), feminine(???) contestants for the Mr. Eastern crown. This is guaranteed to be something you'll remember and laugh about for years to come. (Especially if you get some good blackmail pictures out of it!) I certainly hope they're recyclable, as there's a TON of them out there! Sometimes I think the only ones who really win in these elections are the advertisers. The Mr. Eastern Pageant was quite a spectacle last night, with Aaron Cornell, the candidate representing our Baseball team, winning this year's crown, which was presented by last year's Mr. Eastern, also representing baseball, Sam King. Cody Bone, representing the Cheer Squad won the title of Runner Up, accepting the sash from last year's runner up, Jacob (C. J.) Enoch, and Josh Feliciano, representing the Characters Club, took home the title of Miss Congeniality. As always, it was quite a show, and not for the faint of heart. Sheryl Marmon, Physical Plant secretary, Ann Owens of the Development Foundation, and surprise guest judge, Rudy Reyes, had the difficult task of deciding the winner. Congratulations to all involved. Tonight's special event is billed as the "BONK Comedy Show", so if you enjoy a good laugh, make plans to attend! Tune in to www.radio.eosc.edu to listen to Doug playing a fabulous mix of music, and keeping us all informed of important happenings on campus and in the area. (I already heard him announce that today is Marci O'Donley's birthday.) It's been 3 long years, but we've finally gotten a radio station back in operation here at Eastern, and it's going to be great! My Saturday was very busy, but it started off with the Homecoming parade, where I got to see lots of familiar faces as our men's and women's basketball, softball and baseball teams, as well as cheerleaders, and all the Homecoming King and Queen candidates, along with last year's king and queen, and various clubs and organizations had floats and vehicles in the parade. (I thought it was really appropriate that the Bass Club candidates were riding in a bass boat, and Aggie Club had a tractor in the parade.) I didn't get to attend the games as I was at a funeral, but I hear that Rocio (Rosie) Medrano of the Lady Mountaineers, and Curtis Citty of the Bass Club were crowned King and Queen, and that both our teams won their games. Great job kids! PAWS will be having an adoption day in front of Roy's today, if you're looking for a new best friend. The trees on campus and behind the Library are popping out with some great Fall color, and I've noticed the hill across from our house looks like a patchwork quilt. Very pretty and colorful. I keep expecting to look out the window and see a flock of geese flying over, since they usually know to get moving southward before a cooler front comes in, so I figure within the next couple of days we should be seeing some. Due to illnesses causing absenteeism in the Cafeteria, the Cyber Cafe will not be open again today. Sorry to disappoint all you Cyber Cafe fans, but we'll be back in operation as soon as we can. Our menu for today includes: Baked ham BBQ rib sandwich Sweet potato casserole Corn Green beans Steamed red potatoes Hot rolls And for dessert, have a helping of Banana Pudding. Have a great day, Rhoda :-) P. S. Don't forget to tune into Doug Sims on EOSC Mountaineer radio weekday mornings from 8:00 to 11:00. Let everyone know, Eastern is back on the air. A special thanks to the baseball and softball teams and cheerleaders and Band and just the general loud student body members who were here and to the faculty and administrators and security and boosters and supporters who were present. Both teams have several freshmen and it was important to get the HOME season off with wins to get us off and running. Hill men are pre-season nationally ranked and mentioned in several publications. Hill women are good. RATIONALE: We basketball coaches at Eastern feel since ALL of the HIGH SCHOOLS in the 7 county area in southeastern Oklahoma(where we draw most of our general students) have basketball teams and basketball success is VERY IMPORTANT to ALL of the players and their parents and fans of these high schools that success at Eastern in basketball would help us draw MORE students from these high schools as general students at EASTERN. Student numbers and student retention and academic successes and graduation success is what it is all about from a financial stand-point to our institution. It appears this year can be a very successful and prideful year from both basketball teams, both baseball and softball teams and the cheerleaders. Thank you again for your immediate support. I didn't even have to look out to see what was going on. I could tell by looking at the people coming in to eat. If they had spots all over, it was raining out, if not, it had stopped again. How's that for an Okie weather report? I haven't heard mention of it on Mountaineer Radio, but I happen to know that our favorite DJ, Doug Sims, will be celebrating a birthday this Saturday. He has told me that he's boycotting his birthday until he starts receiving money for it, so if anyone has any extra cash on you, please go give him a little something, would you? Also, Mimi Kelley, the Financial Aid Director at the McAlester Campus will be celebrating her birthday this Sunday, as will Kathy Wilson of the Cafeteria. I hope they all have a great weekend, with lots of great food, fun and friends around to enjoy. Good luck to our Lady Mountaineer Basketball team travelling to Arkansas for games today and tomorrow! Well, we finally made it! After today, most of us will have a week off to rest, eat, visit with family, and celebrate Thanksgiving (mostly by eating). The Cafeteria will be open, though, for those students who cannot go home for the holiday. Hours will be 11:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. every day from Monday Nov. 22 to Sun. Nov. 28, EXCEPT on Thanksgiving Day, Thursday Nov. 25, when the hours will be from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. A traditional Thanksgiving meal will be served that day, and the students will be allowed to take a carryout meal with them for their evening meal, so that we can close the Cafeteria and allow our employees to go home and spend time with their families. Several employees will celebrate birthdays during Thanksgiving break, including Maria Martinez on Mon. Nov. 22, Lea Weaver on Tues. Nov. 23, Tanya Spears on Fri. Nov. 26, and Barbara Gilbertson and myself on Sat. Nov. 27. I really can't think of anything much better than getting a whole week off for your birthday, can you? I guess that kind of makes up for the fact that it's usually so cold by this time of year that I never was able to have the cookout birthday party I always wanted when I was a kid. For those of you who will still be around this evening, be sure and come out and see "Around the World in Eight Plays", presented by Theatre Eastern, and directed by Melissa Heath-Lee, and starring a whole gang of area school children, as well as our regular Theatre Eastern group. Admission is FREE to Eastern students, staff and faculty, and only $1 for the general public. All you Basketball fans, don't forget to come out and support our Mountaineers and Lady Mountaineers next Tuesday night as they take on Seminole State here at EOSC. Admission is FREE, and the games are at 6:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. Our menu for today includes: Spaghetti with meat sauce BBQ sandwiches California blend vegetables French fries Garlic bread Green beans And for dessert, have a helping of Cobbler. Of course the official transcripts and letters of recommendation will still have to be postal mailed. The deadline date matches the GIFT and CSI deadlines of January 25th, 2011. OACC will be giving 14 ($500 per semester) tuition waiver scholarships. Each college will be represented with a scholarship. The GPA has been increased to a 3.50. Please help us provide this information to the Eastern students. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Nov. 29 Message-ID: <4CF3D96F.1030700@eosc.edu> Hi folks, Wow, where did the week off go? It's always amazing how quickly time off flies by! And it's been a really busy morning for me already, since I cashier at breakfast and then had to hurry in and fire up the computer, and do time cards, and still have a pile of other things on my desk waiting for me to deal with. I hope everyone had a really great week off. I bet most of us ate and slept like we were going into hibernation! I know I did when I got the chance! Some days were super busy though, but that's good too. It's good to have time off to get things done that seem to pile up on you when you have to be at work all week. Our menu for today includes: Salisbury steak Mashed potatoes and gravy Peas and carrots California blend vegetables Wild rice And for dessert, have a delicious Chocolate Cupcake. Have a great week back at Eastern, Rhoda :-) -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Nov. 30 Message-ID: <4CF53A16.4050108@eosc.edu> Hi folks, Sorry I'm running late with the menu, but I had to pick my daughter up from school due to a severe nosebleed. I thought the days of picking up sick kids from school were over when they got to be Seniors, but I guess that's not always true. They do still need us on occasion no matter how big they get, I guess. Belated Happy Birthday wishes to Lindy Morgan, who celebrated her big day yesterday. I understand she had to put in a long one with the ball games last night, too. Maybe when she finally does get a chance to celebrate, it'll be twice as good. I hope everyone's looking forward to the Christmas Reception for EOSC employees tomorrow afternoon, (I've checked out the menu and it's made me very hungry), and I bet the students are looking forward to the Snowball tomorrow night. Our menu for today includes: Pork loin Mashed potatoes and white gravy Brussels sprouts Corn Turnips Hot rolls And for dessert, have a helping of either Cherry or Strawberry Cobbler. Eastern's Phi Theta Kappa chapter will be conducting the 'Toys for Tots' campaign/ We will be collecting until the morning of December 7th and have the traditional wrapping party also on that Tuesday, Dec. 7th beginning @ noon. We have been able to help all students in the past whose names have been brought to our attention plus an abundance of other needy children. It's a wonderful service to our own student body that filters to the surrounding communities as well. If you know of someone who is an Eastern student and could use our help, please give me their name and how many/ages of children, etc. I am going to list the families that have been given to me so far with ages/gender and sizes if given. If you feel that you can help one of these specifically, please identify when you donate items. Some Faculty members are giving bonus points for participating in this project. Please ask your instructor if you are unsure if they are participating. McAlester campus students can give your donation to Kelly Bogard or one of the ladies up front. Make sure your name is on the package so faculty members can be contacted of your donation.
