This evening our Theater Department will present "Southern Hospitality", a comedy for the whole family, and the Wilburton Diggers will travel to Pocola for their game. Tomorrow morning many folks will go to the Kiamichi Elec. Annual Meeting, and the big anniversary sale at Roy's Cardinal Foods. There's also a big pet adoption event going on at PetSense at McAlester Saturday and Sunday, which our Wilburton PAWS group will participate in, the Bigfoot Festival at Honobia, and lots of yard sales. Why is there always so much to do when I am so tired and just want to rest? The Cyber Cafe will be closed at lunch today, but this evening's meal will be through the Cyber Cafe, as well as Saturday's and Sunday's meals. Be sure and let all the students know that the CYBER CAFE WILL BE OPEN SATURDAY AND SUNDAY FROM 11:30 TO 5:00. Dorm residents, if you exceed your meal plan, you will have to pay cash to eat. Our menu for today includes: Chicken fried steak Mashed potatoes and white gravy Hot rolls Corn Peas Catalina blend vegetables Turkey noodle soup Chili dogs Tater tots And for dessert, have a Zebra Brownie. Have a great October weekend, Rhoda :-) -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Oct. 4, 2010 Message-ID: <4CA9EAC0.9000801@eosc.edu> Hi folks, What a great weekend! I hope you all got out and had lots of fun. I thought my husband was going to have to work both days this weekend, but he wound up being off on Saturday, so we got to go to the Kiamichi Electric annual meeting. Of course we didn't win any of the wonderful door prizes. (We're trying to set a record for the most years attended without winning anything. I'm sure there'll be a big prize for that later on.) Hard to believe it's gotten so chilly so quickly! There was actually a frost warning out for the area last night! Man, when Fall hits, it hits hard and fast! I got to attend the play "Southern Hospitality" Friday evening presented by our Theater Department, and really enjoyed it. It looked like everyone, audience and cast alike, were really enjoying themselves. Our menu for today includes: Chicken pot pie Baked potatoes Corn Brussels sprouts Garden blend vegetables And for dessert, have a piece of Yellow Cake with Chocolate Frosting. Today is also the day the EOSC Horticulture Department will be having their plant sale downtown in the Chamber of Commerce parking lot. They should have a good crowd this afternoon, with Wilburton having their Homecoming parade at 2:00 today. The Diggers' game against Heavener will be this evening at 7:30 at the Wilburton High School Football Field. Wear your purple and come cheer on the Diggers! I realized something the other day that I bet other ladies, (and possibly a few handy men), have noticed. You know we split the year up into different seasons. Of course, there are the regular ones, Spring, Summer, Fall and Winter. Also, football season, basketball season, baseball season, deer season (which the deer would much rather do without), swimsuit season, (which I could do without), etc. But I declare the start of "Static Cling Season". I noticed the other day as I was removing laundry from the dryer, that there were socks stuck to everything! We always wonder where the missing sock goes, (because there's always a missing sock). I think they just get stuck to things you fold up and put in drawers. You just can't find them because they're so tightly bonded to the other item, towels, sheets or whatever. There is probably enough static electricity generated during this season to power a city, if we could just find a way to harness it. We need to find a way to use it for good, (powering some of our electrical equipment), and not evil, (scooting your feet on the carpet and zapping some unsuspecting victim, even though it's fun). Some of the bright scientific minds on campus need to be working on this challenge. I'm sick of getting zapped every time I touch something metal, and the season is just getting started! Our menu for today includes: Penne pasta bake with meatballs Corn Green peas Carrots Vegetable beef soup Bread sticks And for dessert, have a couple of Cookies. Brace yourselves everyone, we're expecting a swarm of high school students attending an FCCLA District Conference on campus in the next couple of days. Please be as helpful and courteous as possible to these potential future Mountaineers. I was surprised to see some of the Baseball team here first thing this morning, (most people don't want to wake up that early), but they informed me they'd already been lifting weights. Oct. 12 Message-ID: <4CB47D31.20306@eosc.edu> Hi folks, It suddenly dawned on me this morning, as I was manning the front at breakfast, that today is Tuesday, and Wednesday is pretty much Friday this week. That put a smile on my face! Of course, next week I'll be an old grump when my daughter is out of school and I have to get up and come to work, but for this week, I'm going to enjoy having a couple of extra days off. Here's some good news for all EOSC support and professional staff members. The Staff Council is hosting a Membership Drive, and there's a bonus! Any support or professional staff member who pays their $5 Staff Council dues by Nov. 18, will be automatically entered into a drawing to be eligible to win a $50 cash prize! You may enter by either paying your dues at the Business Office window by Nov. 18, or by filling out and turning in a payroll deduction form available from any Staff Council Member by Oct. 27, authorizing the dues to be deducted from your check(s) in Dec. Staff Council Dues and Flower Fund dues are listed on the same form and may be paid at the same time. Employees at the McAlester campus may turn your form and dues in to Lisa Gray. By paying your Staff Council dues, you are then eligible to vote on issues that come before the Staff Council requiring a vote of the members. Our menu for today includes: Chicken fajitas Pinto beans Mexican cornbread Green chili and rice casserole Bermuda vegetables And for dessert, have a piece of Pumpkin Pie Cheesecake. I don' t know how we got out of sync with the public school system, but it seems that their Fall Break is scheduled for next week. Don't forget, even though basically the whole campus is shut down for Fall Break, the Cyber Cafe will be open from 11:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday, to feed those students who don't get to go home over the break. A couple of our couldn't-do-without-'em tech guys will be celebrating birthdays over the weekend. Keith Lewis will be celebrating a birthday tomorrow, and Jeff Weems will be celebrating his on Sunday. Hope you guys have a great time! Get out over break and enjoy the wonderful weather, the foliage just beginning to put on its autumn garb, all the interesting things to see, do and eat at Fall Festival, and just life in general! Oct. 18 Message-ID: <4CBC620C.8060004@eosc.edu> Hi folks, I hope everyone had a wonderful Fall Break. The weather was fantastic for it. Not too hot, not too cold, and no rain! Perfect! We went out to the Fall Festival at Robber's Cave State Park some on Saturday, taking the shuttle from town, and got to walk around and take in all the sights, sounds and smells of the annual event. Even looked at a few of the beautiful cars on display, (although I prefer to look at things I might be able to afford!) Seeing the General Lee from the '70's Dukes of Hazzard TV show made me want to jump through the window and take off, but I restrained myself. I didn't see John Schneider around anywhere anyway, darn it. It was pretty neat to see that Eastern had a recruiting booth right up front at the festival, too. While I was there talking with London White, a future Mountaineer father came by and said he would take some information since he had a son who would be coming here in a couple of years. Our presence at an event like this definitely gives Eastern exposure to people from ALL over the place. Good job, gals! This time of year, you need to have a variety of clothing options ready to wear, with a hoodie feeling really good on the chilly mornings, and shorts being more appropriate for the temperatures later in the day. We're in that transition period between being hot all the time, and being cold all the time, when you can't pack anything away because you know you'll still need to wear it at some point during the day. There will be a PAWS adoption day in front of Roy's today, so if you know anyone who needs a new best friend, foot warmer, burglar alarm, crumb cleaner, lap warmer, face washer, walking companion, high blood pressure remedy, garbage disposal, or a stress reliever, stop by and visit with them. If they don't have the right dog for you, be sure and check the local pound, our PAWS pens, or the McAlester facility. Somewhere there's a dog that could add so much joy to your life, and you won't know how you ever did without it. I can tell you at that time if you are eligible to apply, and also, if you do not have enough contacts to receive the grant. The deadline for signing up for the grant is November 5th. Remember, you must be in your second semester in the SSS Program and be an "active" participant. All students who have not completed the required workshops MUST make arrangements with either June Haynes or Kathy Howe to complete them. You still have till the deadline to complete the workshops. Also, if you received the grant last (Spring) semester, you will not be eligible this semester. If your GPA is below 2.0, you will need to offer proof that you are doing better this semester. The pool is getting bigger, and the minimum pell grant is up, so there will be fewer students who will be able to take advantage of this opportunity. DO NOT ASSUME that you won't get it! If you are receiving pell, and have an unmet need, you may apply. I will be in McAlester on Thursday, Oct. 28 and on Nov. 4th for students who want to do the workshops. I will be there from 4:00 pm till 5:00 pm. After the 5th of November, I will be out of town for several days at conference, so you MUST contact me before then. I will send the list to Financial Aid on the 5th, so it is imperative that you sign up by the 5th. Yesterday was great, but Saturday, I got rained on about 3 times, trying to go ahead and do various things, including the PAWS fundraiser in McAlester which was unfortunately shut down somewhat early due to dark storm clouds headed that way bringing rain and lightning and we didn't want to know what else. We had a good time while we were there, though, and really appreciated the efforts put forth by Blake Lynch and all the sponsors and participants on behalf of both the Wilburton and McAlester PAWS organizations. Our family Halloween party was in about the same situation Saturday evening. They were determined to have it, but most everything had to be squeezed onto the porch and it all pretty much got cut short too. Even so, one of the kids did somehow manage to have enough fun to break a bone in his foot. He'll always remember this Halloween! Looks like there are lots of Halloween activities scheduled for later this week, starting with a Halloween dance on Wed. evening, and the Community Carnival and Trunk or Treat on Thursday evening, followed by the Haunted Dorm. Oct. 27 Message-ID: <4CC83A4E.3060408@eosc.edu> Hi folks, I was surprised yesterday when my daughter, Destiny, and Kim Pick's son, Keith, popped in on me in my office. They, along with a whole herd of other students from Wilburton and several other schools, were attending the College Fair upstairs in the Student Center, and had picked up a bag of informative handouts, along with pens, pencils, etc. from Eastern and various other educational institutions, to help them make a better informed decision concerning their higher education plan. And later yesterday morning, I got to be present when the Staff Council presented Karen Darby with the Employee of the Month award for September. If it seems awfully late to be presenting the award for September with only a few days left in October, then you'll get an idea just how busy Karen is with her recruiting duties. There were weeks when we couldn't pin down a time to catch her to present the award. Finally we managed to find a few spare minutes, between the College Fair and her afternoon "to do" list. We had filed into the outer office where London's desk is and quietly told her we were there to see Karen, but before she could let her know, Karen began speaking to her from her office, outlining all the things she still had to do that day, and it went on and on, with her completely unaware that there was an office full of people waiting to congratulate her. When Helen went in to get her, and she came out and saw us all, I think she thought she was being confronted by a lynch mob. She was looking to see if there was a pink slip in anyone's hand, or a box to pack her things in. She was both surprised and relieved to find out the real reason for our presence in her office. Congratulations, and keep up the good work, Karen! It should be a scary time on campus tonight with the Halloween Dance scheduled for this evening. Can't wait to see pictures of that! And of course, the Halloween Carnival is tomorrow evening and the Haunted Dorm will open to take in new victims...I mean visitors. Our menu for today includes: Pork chops Mashed potatoes and white gravy Blackeyed peas Turnip greens Tomatoes and zucchini Bermuda blend vegetables And for dessert, have some delicious Peach Cobbler. Have a great day, Rhoda :-) -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Oct. 28 Message-ID: <4CC98FF7.1080306@eosc.edu> Hi folks, Brrrrr! I don't know about you, but I was chilly this morning! And then right away we had someone come in for breakfast wearing shorts and flip flops! (Remember back in the old days when we used to call them thongs? Well that took a totally different turn, didn't it?) I was surprised there wasn't frost on my windshield, so I'm thinking I'd better dig around and find my windshield scraper, and a can of deicer, because there are freeze warnings out for tonight. Remember to bring in any tender potted plants, and any pets that you can, and fix a warm bed for any that have to stay outside. The colder temperatures are harder on older animals (and people!) due to arthritis and other conditions of aging, and smaller animals due to them having less body mass to keep them warm, so if at all possible, let them inside, at least at night when it's so cold out. They'll appreciate it. I see tables being set up already in preparation for the big Halloween Carnival being held on campus this evening from 4:30 to 7:00. There'll be lots of little monsters running all over trunk or treating, playing games, and just generally terrorizing the place! Don't let them get you! The Boo Parade should be especially frightful, with all the little monsters gathering to see who is the scariest of them all! And our Baseball Team should be kept really busy today with a game against Carl Albert today at 11:00 a.m., and the Haunted Dorm opening immediately following the carnival at 7:00 p.m., for those brave souls among us who dare to enter its dark depths. (Not me, I'm a big chicken and have a PAWS meeting tonight at 7:00 where it's safe.) Our menu for today includes: Roast beef Baby red mashed potatoes Corn Brussels sprouts Carrots Garden blend vegetables Hot rolls And for dessert, have a hunk of Fresh Apple Cake. Oct. 29 Message-ID: <4CCAE35F.1020702@eosc.edu> Hi folks, Well, after much debate with myself, I finally determined that it really is Friday! I had a moment this morning when I had convinced myself that it was only Thursday, but that would've just made the week way too long! I finally snapped out of it, and am fully ready for a weekend! Don't forget today is Student Appreciation day in the Bookstore, so go by and visit with Ali and the gang, (sometimes known as Scooby Doo and Co.), and have a cookie and some punch. And anyone who has bought or buys a "Pink" product before 2:00 today will be entered in the drawing to win a Digital Camcorder. That would be some Halloween treat! I had too many other things going on to get to attend the carnival last night, but I heard raves from one of the Boo Parade judges about how cute and original lots of the costumes were. I also heard that the Haunted Dorm went really well. (I guess our Baseball team was really psyched up after winning their game yesterday.) They'll be having it again tonight, Saturday night and Sunday night in case anyone wants to come out and see if they're brave enough to make it all the way through. If you follow Wilburton Digger high school football, you'll have to follow them to Vian tonight for a matchup there. We'll be having a PAWS adoption day in front of Roy's Grocery Store tomorrow, with lots of our wonderful 4-legged friends ready to find new homes before winter sets in. Come by and see if we don't have one that you and your family could love! Julie Moss of our Computer Services Department, and Leon Hanebrink, our Farm Manager, will both celebrate birthdays this Saturday Oct. 30th. I hope they both have a wonderful time. And something's fishy in the Cafeteria today as our menu consists of: Fried fish Shrimp poppers Pulled BBQ pork sandwich French fries Baked potatoes Corn on the cob Mixed vegetables Fresh spinach Red beans And for dessert, have a piece of your choice of Coconut Cream, Chocolate or Banana Pies. Our watchers and counters estimate that we had over 1,000 visitors from the community and surrounding towns here on Thursday afternoon. As always our carnival has helped create a bridge between our college and the city of Wilburton with a joint effort including Eastern State College, Wilburton Main Street, Wilburton Chamber of Commerce and The Red Hat Society. Our combined effort Boo Parade was attended again by a record number of participants and nice prizes were awarded by the Wilburton Chamber of Commerce. Thanks to Leland Walker's suggestion and another joint effort between Student Services, the Aggie Club, The Bass Club and PTK we brought a new attraction to our carnival this year "The Trout Pond" which was visited by over 50 children wanting to catch a fish. Thank you Dana Lewis for making all the phone calls and doing all of the legwork to bring them here. When we put on an event like this carnival it is always with a deep sense of satisfaction to see us work together internally and externally for a greater purpose. Thank you Maintenance for putting all our tables and trash cans where we wanted them and for the cleanup that took place afterward. Thank you Brenda Kennedy, PTK and several other students for being our inflatable monitors, put-up and take-down crew and all -around help for the day. It was as always a smashing success. Enjoy the photos attached taken by Student Services staff member Lori Mitchell of some of the highlights of this day. October 29th marked the kick-off of our Lead to Read program, another joint effort project between our college and Wilburton Elementary School. Over 20 students and staff joined us on the bus ride over to Wilburton Elementary school and then broke off into grades to read books that were organized and provided to us by Maria Martinez our college librarian. Thank you Maria. Each student was able to read one book each to various students in classes from pre-k to 2nd grade. Buckskin Bob also made an appearance and wowed the crowd at the school with high five's and thumbs up for their efforts. Principal Jan Gilmore was on hand to direct our students to various classes and to observe our "leaders in the making" helping mentor young students to become better readers. President Dr. Stephen Smith then presented Ms. Gilmore with one of our "Lead to Read" T-shirts printed for us by our own Russ Bird with a logo designed by him and Student Services staff member Lori Mitchell. Thanks Russ and Lori the T-shirts were a hit! Our next Lead to Read date is Friday November 12. If you would like to participate in this project please contact Dean Sally Davis ASAP and get your name on the list. October 29th also marked the completion of our fall "Friday Night LIghts" project. For several weeks members of the Student Affairs, students and the Foundation Alumni director having been traveling every Friday night to high school football games to advertise our college to potential students and to collect any information on alum who may be living in these towns. This year we visited Atoka, Battiest, McAlester, Stigler, Talihina and last night Holdenville. Buckskin Bob and Eastern students also visit the audience in the stands and shoot T-shirts with the Eastern T-shirt gun. This project is very enjoyable and will continue in the spring when our recruiting team visits high school basketball games. Let us know if you would like to come and participate in this project. On to Mountaineer Monday and Homecoming 2010 November 1st thru the 6th. Hero Up! Homecoming T-shirts are now available until they last for $10.00 in the Student Services office. Homecoming Mums are also for sale for $20.00. Call Dana Lewis to reserve one now. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
