I'm so glad it was no worse than it was. It seems like every year on the news, there's talk of raging wildfires somewhere in California. Just for the record, I did try sending it, twice as a matter of fact, whether it worked or not. "A" for effort, right? I heard very sad news yesterday after I got off work of the passing of our long-time local librarian, Shirley Bambeck. I had just talked with her last Thursday before our PAWS meeting, and she seemed fine. This was tragic and so unexpected! That's a switch, huh? Maybe the triple digits are finally gone for the year. I could certainly live with that. I'm ready for some nice fall weather for several months. We seem to have acquired a couple of serving utensils from the last Saturday's picnic that can be identified and claimed here in the Cafeteria, if you're missing one. Don't forget the big annual Choctaw Nation Labor Day Festival at Tuskahoma this weekend, if you're looking for something to do. There'll be free big name musical entertainment every evening, carnival rides, lots of food booths, and arts and crafts to enjoy. In other words, something for everyone! And we'll be having a PAWS adoption day in Roy's parking lot this Saturday, if you are looking for a new furry friend to make your family complete. I'm just glad it's Friday, especially Friday starting a long weekend. I'm having trouble getting back in the groove of this 5 day a week schedule. I just read Dr. Smith's email about the "Lead to Read" program Eastern is participating in, involving sending some of our students to Wilburton Elementary to read to the children. I can remember when I was in elementary school, (yes, it's a stretch, but I can still remember back that far), how impressed we were by "bigger kids". This will give the elementary students a chance to meet and get to know some of our fine students, and give our Eastern students a whole new perspective on how they can have a very positive impact on others with their contributions to society. I hope many of our students become involved in this wonderful new program. This ban has already caused the cancellation of the Fall Fire and Franks bonfire that was scheduled for next week. I haven't heard if this might be rescheduled if the burn ban is lifted or not. Big Happy Birthday wishes go out today to a longtime member of our Maintenance Department. Danny Foster is now officially 50 (going on 21, according to him). There have been several worthy members join the Nifty Fifty Club this year, and I'm right behind them, so just keep celebrating, gang! Of course, Danny's been celebrating for all 50 years now and isn't likely to let turning 50 slow him down a bit. (And if that name sounds familiar to you, Danny is also the person who reports our local temperatures and weather conditions to the Channel 6 Weather Department.) Sept. 9 Message-ID: <4C88F969.1090500@eosc.edu> Hi folks, Well, yesterday evening was interesting. After our house lights went off and right back on a few times during the evening, they finally went totally off at about 10:20 or so, and were off for about an hour. I had to pull out my cell phone to use for a flashlight, (see, Mildred, they are good for something), to help me find a flashlight and a lighter and candles so we wouldn't be left in total darkness. (It really is dark in the country when the electricity goes off.) Other than major catastrophes, like a couple of ice storms in the past several years, we rarely have a power outage. Years ago, it used to happen every time a cloud came up, but since we've moved out there and I made sure to be prepared with candles and wall sconces all over the place, it hasn't happened much at all. While the electricity and TV were still working though, I noticed a map displayed on a special weather report that showed this area of the state, and which portions were under a flood watch, and which portions were under a tornado watch. It would probably seem odd to anyone but an Okie that these counties were right next to, and even included some of the counties covered by a burn ban. Gotta love our weird Oklahoma weather. After raining all night, though, maybe the burn ban will be lifted. The entire Cafeteria staff will be attending a Safety Meeting today from 2:00 to 3:00, and so will be unavailable for that hour to answer phone calls. If you need to contact us, please leave a message on Mildred's or my phone and we will get back to you after our meeting. Our menu for today includes: Meatloaf Steamed red potatoes Corn Green beans Navy beans Zucchini and tomatoes Hot rolls And for dessert, have some tasty Apple Cobbler, and you can top it off with our wonderful Soft Serve Ice Cream. How can a short week seem like such a long week sometimes? What's wrong with that picture? Too much going on, I guess. Seems like people never have time to rest and recharge their batteries anymore. (At least grownups don't!) I'm glad we got the recent rain that we had badly needed, and even gladder that we didn't get as much as some areas. I saw on the news last night that several counties surrounding Latimer are in need of emergency funds to deal with all the damage the heavy rains caused to roads and property in those areas. There's a PAWS adoption day planned in front of Roy's this Saturday, and also one at PetSense at McAlester, so drop by one of these locations and find out more about our organization and find yourself a new four-legged best friend. Also, this is the weekend of the Latimer County Free Fair, so even if you don't have an entry, just go out and admire what other local folks have made or raised to enter. We really have a lot of talented people in this area, and the fair gives them a great venue to show off their various skills, and even win a little money at it. Sept. 14 Message-ID: <4C8F8E05.6020403@eosc.edu> Hi folks, Yesterday evening was so nice I had to sit outside and just enjoy it for a few minutes after work. While sitting there I noticed several small birds flitting around in the top of our mimosa tree. I couldn't get a good enough look at them to identify what kind they were, but they appeared to be picking the seeds out of some of the many seed pods dangling from the branches of the tree. I had never noticed this happening before, but when I thought about how many seed pods full of seeds probably fall from that tree each year, I'd say they've probably been cleaning up a lot of mimosa seeds for us over the years, or our yard would look like a mimosa jungle! It's amazing the things that occur in nature that we don't even notice going about our busy lives! I always enjoy it when I can take a moment to see what's going on in the natural world around us and feel like I learned a little something. Those of you who have some spare time around noon today should catch the baseball game between our Eastern Mountaineers and Texarkana College. Good luck Mountaineers! Get fired up and win one for the Blue and Gold! Our menu for today includes: Chicken alfredo Steamed red potatoes Mixed vegetables Winter blend vegetables Garlic bread Peas Fried squash And for dessert, try some of Summer's Rocky Road Pie. Sept. 15 Message-ID: <4C90E5A7.8070904@eosc.edu> Hi folks, Yesterday's rain was something we haven't experienced a lot of in a while. It was a wonderful tonic for all the poor plants that have suffered through this summer's extreme heat and dry conditions. The Fall Fire and Franks bonfire had originally been scheduled for this evening, and had to be cancelled due to the burn ban that's had all fires put on hold in this area temporarily. After yesterday's rain, it's kind of ironic that they probably still couldn't have one because the wood would be too WET to burn. That's our Oklahoma weather again. I know we fuss when the air conditioning goes out, but the last few days, it's been so chilly in parts of this building, I was about ready to mug Buckskin Bob when he came through yesterday just to get his big coat! Who cares if it's too big? It looks really warm! Very Happy Birthday wishes go out today to the lady who keeps Rudy in line during the work week, (no, not Marci, she gets him the rest of the time). Sheryl Marmon, our Physical Plant Administrative Assistant, and Staff Council Secretary, is celebrating a birthday today. I hope she enjoys herself to the MAX. Our menu for today includes: Polish sausage Scalloped potatoes Sauerkraut Black eyed peas California blend vegetables Cornbread Brussels sprouts And for dessert, have a Chocolate Brownie with M&M sprinkles on top. The listed dates are below. We are organizing this program for the lower grades (pre-k thru 2nd) first and may add 3rd-5th grade by January 2011. Maria Martinez our Librarian will assist us in choosing appropriate books to read that coordinate with the various grades. We will be reading for 14 classes and I need a minimum of 4 students per class but will happy to take more. If we get a large number of volunteers we may take the Eastern bus over to the school on the various dates. All dates are on Fridays and all times are 1:45 pm. If you are someone who would be interested please contact me ASAP so we can be organized for our first trip on October 29th. This is an excellent way to utilize community service hours if your scholarship requires it. It is also a positive way to build responsible student leaders, be charitable and is an excellent marketing tool for Eastern. Be part of the solution and come help us out. Dr. Sally E. Sept. 13-17th. In the past we have placed or won 1st in this competition against ALL other colleges in the great state of Oklahoma!!!. The Campus Compact has divided the competition based on enrollment this year. We are in the under 3,000 student category in the State. The total number of students who register at Eastern will be forwarded and entered into the competition from all colleges across the State of Oklahoma. We are hoping for help from you to help us in this endeavor. If a student helps they can register for the prizes we are going to give away on Friday. An IPOD Touch is 1st prize, $50 cash for 2nd prize, $25 cash for 3rd prize. If a student can encourage and get another student to sign a registration form and turn it in, they can input their name into the prize drawing for each registration card they bring. Multiple chances to win for those who are willing to work a little J!! Students need to complete a voting registration card: ? if you they have never registered before ? if they need to change their address (the new 911 home address requirement that just went into effect in our area could be used here) ? if they need to change their name ? if they need to change their party affiliation All of these count in our competition ? PTK Leadership students are setting up booths in McAlester on Wednesday evening to catch both the 5:00 classes and the 7:30 classes offering snacks if students sign up. ? PTK Leadership Students are setting up booths in both Miller and Johnston Hall in the evenings of Monday and Tuesday. ? When your children are going through that stage where they think they know everything and you are old, outdated and unbelievably stupid, you'll want to be able to prove to them that you did indeed go to college, and you do know a few things. The cooler temperatures with a little rain thrown in have certainly been good for the plants at my house. My clematis vines had shriveled up and looked dead, (I think that's the plant equivalent of curling up in a fetal position and giving up), but now they're starting to sprout new shoots all over and just might bloom again before winter. I'm looking forward to the EOSC Fall Theatre Department presentation, Southern Hospitality, next week. I think they're still trying to round up some of the props they need for this performance, such as deer or other animal heads, or stuffed fish, men's dress shoes in size 11 or 13, wedding decorations, a bridal magazine and surveyor's marking flags. Please contact her at Ext. 758, (that's 465-1758 off campus), if you have any of these items you'd be willing to loan out for these performances. (I know for a fact that in this part of the country there are decapitated deer heads on walls all over the place. Someone's got to have one they'd be willing to loan for two performances.) I keep looking for more geese, and migrating monarchs floating by on the breeze. If you ever thought about running away and joining the circus, or maybe just going to see one, Julie Lawrence tells me the Shriner Circus will be having performances tonight and tomorrow night at 4:30 and 7:30 at the McAlester Expo Center. Shriners are much more than just those silly guys in those crazy little cars and funny hats that are in lots of our local parades, (or the crazy guys in that Ray Stevens song). These circus performances will help them raise money to provide medical care for burned children, and children with various birth defects who desperately need life altering medical help. It's definitely a very worthy cause, so go have an unforgettable evening and support this wonderful organization. Our menu for today includes: Chicken Parmesan Brussels sprouts Peas Corn Zucchini and tomatoes Bread sticks And for dessert, have some Bread Pudding or Apple Cobbler. Guess I shouldn't have been, since it was predicted, but I definitely wasn't expecting as much as we've gotten. It was really pouring for a while this morning. People were coming in for breakfast all covered in water spots. Good luck to our Softball and Baseball teams, who have games to travel to today. I hope they're headed somewhere where it's not raining. Rain's not bad for basketball, but it'll definitely mess up a softball or baseball game. There's a football game scheduled at Wilburton High School this evening against Panama, too. Let's hope that doesn't get rained out. They don't have as many home games on their schedule this year as they do away games, and my family was planning on going to this one, so if I had my way, I'd just as soon not be wet all through it. Also, there's a PAWS adoption day scheduled for tomorrow and I really hope that doesn't get rained out. We have a lot of dogs that need to find homes. English instructor, Laurence Raunikar, will celebrate his birthday tomorrow. I hope he has an enjoyable one. Our menu for today includes: Pork loin Mashed potatoes and gravy Green beans Corn Catalina blend vegetables Garden blend vegetables Hot rolls And for dessert, try a Cookie. Sept. 27 Cyber Cafe closed today Message-ID: <4CA0B353.5030105@eosc.edu> Hi folks, It looks like some fine Fall weather has finally made it to us. Everything is starting to revive after the summer heat wave. My crape myrtles are starting to put out more blooms, and my clematis is sending out shoots when I thought it was about beyond hope. Of course, they won't have time to do very much before winter nips them in the bud, but it's always nice to see that they are still alive. I haven't heard how any of Eastern's games turned out, but I got to go to the Wilburton vs. Panama high school football game Friday night and see Wilburton win one! That was their first win in a while and they were really jazzed up about it. There are only a couple more home games for the Diggers, and the last one is their big rivalry with Hartshorne, on Nov. 5., known as the Battle of Gowen Mountain. That ought to be a contest! Bad news for Cyber Cafe fans today. Due to unexpected absences, the Cyber Cafe will be closed today. We're hoping to be back fully operational tomorrow. Don't forget the Theatre Dept. will be presenting "Southern Hospitality" this Thurs. and Fri. evenings. Be sure and make plans to come see it. For those of you who enjoyed "Southern Belles" last year, this will be along the same line, and is sure to be very funny. Our menu for today includes: Chicken enchiladas Rice Refried beans Corn Scandinavian blend vegetables BBQ on a bun French fries Freschetta Flatz sandwiches (New item) And for dessert, have a helping of Cherry Cobbler. (After you take your allergy medicine to ward off all the ragweed pollen.) I had to laugh yesterday evening at some of my cats. The cooler weather had them feeling really frisky, and they were running up, down and all around in the huge oak tree in our front yard like they'd discovered a new world, full of undiscovered paths to explore, and they were trying them all out. It looked like a giant game of "cat tag" and they were having a ball! Happy Birthday wishes go out today to Mr. Hank Mooney, Eastern's Director of Public Information. (7,001-30,000 FTE) All of the campuses that participated can be justifiably proud: together, 18 campuses registered 2,424 new student voters over a five-day period. While this accomplishment falls short of our 2008 record, the results do double the last off-presidential election year performance of 1,251 students registered by 12 campuses in 2006. The state results are attached. Oklahoma Campus Compact will present Eastern Oklahoma State College, Rose State College, and the University of Central Oklahoma with 2010 Voter Registration Champion awards, and the State Regents Office will issue a press release to announce these results. Remember that students wishing to vote in the upcoming general election may be registered to vote in Oklahoma until 5 p.m. Friday, October 8th. Campuses should also be making plans for voter education and mobilization, including information on precinct poll locations, and a system on campus to assist students with absentee voting. Sept. 30 Cyber Cafe Open Sat. & Sun. Message-ID: <4CA4AECA.7010904@eosc.edu> Hi folks, I can tell the change in the weather has some people a little conflicted. I've seen them come in for breakfast with jackets and hats on atop shorts and flip flops. I guess they're prepared for anything our unpredictable Oklahoma weather can throw at them. We have had several requests to have the Cafeteria open on Saturdays again, so starting this Saturday, the Cyber Cafe will be open from 11:30 to 5:00. We're hoping this schedule will be more convenient for the students who remain on campus during the weekend than the 11:00 to 1:00 and 5:00 to 6:00 serving hours we observed in the past. This will enable them to come in anytime between 11:30 and 5:00 and get their choice of Cyber Cafe menu items. If you exceed your meal plan, you will have to pay cash ($6.00) for your meal. Today we bid farewell to a longtime Eastern employee, Mark Hill. He is leaving us after 23 years of service, and we wish him the very best. You will be missed, Mark. Don't forget to attend "Southern Hospitality" today in Mitchell Auditorium presented by our own Theatre Deparment under the direction of Melissa Lee. The final dress rehearsal will be held today at 1:30, and the regular performances will be tonight and tomorrow night at 7:30. Our menu for today is a Thanksgiving preview featuring: Turkey Dressing Baked potatoes Broccoli and cheese soup California blend vegetables Green beans And for dessert, have a helping of Banana Pudding.
