I happened to glance up as I was driving in and saw a huge line of geese headed north. The formation stretched halfway across the sky there were so many birds taking advantage of the next few days' wonderful weather outlook to make their way back to their summer homes. I had seen a few small flocks headed south this past fall, but they seemed to be taking their time at it. The geese this morning seemed to be in a hurry to get to where they were going and get on with the spring business of making nests and raising next year's flock. I believe most of my plants survived the frost we had night before last, but my little basil plant looks pretty rough. We'll see if today's warm weather helps it perk back up any. Don't forget to take your old household and automobile batteries, old papers, unwanted magazines, #1, 2 & 5 plastic bottles/containers, clean aluminum and steel cans, and empty printer ink cartridges to the Recycling Day at the OSU Extension Center parking lot Saturday from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Do something good for our planet! Also, don't forget this weekend's Sapphire Ball. I'd like to once again congratulate Ruth Askew Brelsford, this year's winner of the President's Excellence in Teaching Award, and Keith Lewis, winner of the J. C. Hunt Award. They are both great assets to our campus and state. Our menu for today includes: Fish strips or Salisbury steak Batter bites (potatoes) Pinto beans Fried okra Cornbread And for dessert, have a piece of Apricot Cobbler. You sure had to hang onto things or be ready to chase them down if the wind got hold of them. Our neighbor across the road came over last night by flashlight to see if we could call in for him as the electricity had gone out on their line. I imagine the strong winds had blown a limb down on the line somewhere and left several homes in the dark. It didn't take long for the power to be restored and things back to normal, though. I doubt some of the folks even noticed it as they were probably already in bed. I know it seemed to be raining little limbs off our mimosa tree all over our front yard yesterday. And all the leftover fall leaves that were still hanging on the oaks are blown to Kansas now. It even blew a piece of the siding off the end of our house. Replacing that will be a nice little project for my husband to tackle. EOSC classes have been canceled for today to allow plenty of time and space for this important event. We've been doing a brisk business for breakfast. I've already had to make a run to the Business Office and another to the Bookstore to get change. Also, this morning, don't forget it's Biggest Loser weigh-in day, so if you're in on the contest, get over there and check your progress. Good luck! At 2:00 there will be an origami demonstration in the library to teach how to fold paper cranes for the "1,000 Cranes" project sponsored by the Honor Students, and assisted by the Latimer County Arts Council, in an effort to raise money for relief efforts in Japan. If you would like to participate in this very worthwhile project, come to the library at 2:00 to learn something of this beautiful art form, and how you can help. Locally, the office of the Chief of Police is up for election today, so make sure and go vote for the candidate of your choice. I found out after the fact yesterday that Melissa Lee, our wonderful theater instructor, was celebrating her birthday. I hope she had a fantastic day! She's a real sweetheart! We were crazy busy in the Cyber Cafe and the Cafeteria steadily for several hours. That coming right after the extremely long day for our cooks and other workers on Saturday when they worked the Sapphire Ball, has left a lot of our crew dragging. We've got another big day coming up on Friday, when Eastern hosts the FFA Interscholastic Contest, and we'll once again have swarms of high schoolers on campus taking tests and having fun. EOSC classes at Wilburton will again be dismissed for this event. Due to an unexpected absence among our crew, the Cyber Cafe will not be open today. Please be patient, we'll have things back on track as soon as possible. Very happy birthday wishes go out today to EOSC's Assistant Librarian, Kim Pendergraft, and Oklahoma Miner Training Institute Administrative Assistant, Danita Oller. If we need more paper, I'll be in OKC over the weekend and will purchase more. If you fold cranes in the library, Maria Martinez will have you sign a paper and put your name in the hat for winning the story of Sadako, the little Japanese girl made famous in the book and film, who died before she could fold her 1000 cranes with a wish for good health. April 11 Message-ID: <4DA30ABE.5090606@eosc.edu> Hi folks, Wow, it was wonderful to get some rain last night, (about 2.4 inches according to the weather reports)! The little creek at the foot of our hill was just a mud puddle yesterday, but now it looks like an actual flowing creek again! This should bring back lots of trees and other plants from the brink of death by drought, and lessen the fire danger in the area, too. There was actually a fairly large fire on our land last week and we didn't even know about it until two days later! My daughter and I had walked out to the pond one evening last week and everything was perfectly normal, then I walked out a couple of evenings later and there had been a bulldozer through, tearing a trail right around the far end of our pond and down into the woods. I thought we'd been vandalized at first, then I noticed the blackened debris and ash on the ground and determined that there had been a fire that had burned across part of our land, and the bulldozer trail was made to cut off the fire from the rest of the woods. Thankfully, it wasn't anywhere near our house, and it looks like it didn't take down any big trees, but it did burn everything on the ground in a fair sized area. I'm sure someone thought they could just burn a little trash and it wouldn't get away from them, but even thought you keep the fire on the ground contained, the sparks can fly off and ignite a fire in a whole other area. Even though we have now had some rain, you should check with local law enforcement to see if we're still under a burn ban before you start a fire outside. You never know where it may end up! Our menu for today includes: Hamburger steak Mashed potatoes and brown gravy Corn Green beans Winter blend vegetables Fresh spinach Hot rolls And for dessert, try some Pineapple Upside Down Cake. (This is something that is determined by Financial Aid and you won't know if you have unmet need until you have applied, so don't think that since your books and tuition are covered that you don't have an unmet need.) 3. Be academically in good standing with the college. 4. Be an active participant. (You are required to do 3 workshops with June Haynes and 2 workshops with Kathy Howe as well as using the services or making contact with one of us at least 2 times during the semester to be considered active.) The workshops are on CD and take approximately 30 - 45 minutes to complete. If you have not completed the workshops, you must contact June and Kathy to make arrangements to complete them before the list is returned from Financial Aid. I will send the list to Mrs. Kelley on Monday, April 18. It usually takes a few days to get the list back, so you will have the rest of this week and most of next week, but you will not be considered for the grant if you have not done the workshops! It doesn't cost anything to apply, and it doesn't hurt to try even if you are not sure you qualify, so please come by and sign up asap. April 12 Message-ID: <4DA45CBE.1050109@eosc.edu> Hi folks, Looks like a beautiful day coming up. Everything looks freshly washed after the rain washed the thick coating of pollen off! Don't forget today is Current Student Enrollment day, so those of you who will still be with us this summer or this coming fall, need to get your schedule completed. You don't want to find out that the one class you need isn't offered when you need it. Biggest Loser participants need to go see Loma and weigh in today! I hope you're seeing good results already with your weight loss plan, but if not, there's still time to get busy and turn it around. The weather is getting much better for getting out and walking, running, biking or whatever form of outdoor exercise you prefer to help you lose those pounds and inches. Maybe some gardening, yard work or home repairs would provide you with a work out as well as getting something useful done at the same time. Congratulations to Laura Meyers on being named a PTK National Distinguished Chapter Member. What an honor for her, our PTK chapter and advisor Brenda Kennedy, and our college! (And I'm sure her family is extremely proud of her and for her, too! That'll make her mom's birthday tomorrow extra special!) And more congratulations go out to our cheerleading team who were named National Champions in the Junior College division of JamFest International in Las Vegas, Nevada! Way to go, team! If you can get away, our EOSC Lady Mountaineers Softball team will take on Carl Albert this afternoon at 2:00 here at Eastern. It's a great day for a ballgame so get out there and cheer them on! Our menu for today includes: Meatloaf Grilled pork chops Mashed potatoes and brown and white gravies Brussels sprouts Carrots Zucchini and tomatoes Wild rice Hot rolls And for dessert, pick a piece of pie. We have Chocolate, Coconut and Key Lime to choose from! Yum! Have a great day at Eastern, Rhoda :-) -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... That doesn't count the cranes turned into the Library and the McAlester campus! We have $985 pledged so far. We are exceeding our goal! But it is easier to fold paper than to raise money. And the people of Japan need our money as well as our hopes and prayers. We have to focus now on fund-raising. Tomorrow, Honors students will "pass the hat" er, rice bowl in the cafeteria during the noon hour. Next week we will try to visit each office so that all have opportunity to donate. We need $5 per crane: 400 cranes means $2000! Club sponsors: start the PO process for your donation. Make checks payable to Eastern Honors. When we have met our goal, we will send the entire amount to the relief project. Be assured that all money will go to Japanese Red Cross. If you want an Honors speech student to speak to your campus club or civic organization, just let me know. Also, I am attaching the logo for the 1000 Paper Cranes Relief Project designed by our own Severt Dahl. It is wonderful! Severt graduated last year and is now a graphic design major at SEOSU. Fortunately we got off fairly light in this area. That's not always the case, as one of the most notable events in Wilburton's history was the devastating tornado that swept through the town in May of 1960. The little creek at the foot of our hill that looked like a mud puddle last week, now looks more like a river after last night's rain. While it would've been more pleasant to get this precipitation in the form of a soft, gentle, spring rain, we really needed it however we could get it to refill our local water supply at City Lake. Today kicks off the 5th annual Green Frog Festival in downtown Wilburton, so if you're in town over the weekend, be sure and stop and see all the wonderful arts and crafts and other items for sale, and sample some of the great foods being offered for sale. The Puddle Jump Run may really turn out to be a puddle jump literally after the rain we got. I just looked on my calendar and had to do a double take when I realized it is only 3 weeks until EOSC graduation! Wow, how time flies! Our menu for today includes: Beans Cornbread Baked potatoes Macaroni and cheese Corn on the cob Vegetable blend Fish strips Shrimp poppers Broccoli spears And for dessert, have a Cookie. I got to attend part of the Green Frog Festival, and in spite of high winds Friday evening that blew a few vendors into the next block, everything was back in place and going pretty well on Saturday. I really enjoyed getting to see the cast of the upcoming EOSC production of "Grease" perform some of their musical numbers in the Goldberg and Joseph Heritage Park. I'm looking forward to seeing the actual production on Thursday, April 28th and Friday, April 29th. Our Cyber Cafe will not be open today due to our fryer being out of commission. We're waiting on a part to repair it, and hope to be back to normal as soon as possible. Sorry for any inconvenience this may cause. Very Happy Birthday wishes go out today to Cafeteria Manager, Mildred Whisenhunt. I saw coverage on the news of a tornado or two down around Honobia and Octavia from yesterday evening. We got lost once coming from Honobia and wound up in Octavia, so maybe the tornado did the same thing. New student enrollment looked to be a busy day yesterday. There were lots of potential future Mountaineers on campus plotting their future schedules with the help of our capable advisors. They are about to enter that "transitional phase" of their lives, as depicted in the news EOSC seal, showing a rough lump of coal which becomes a beautiful diamond. (Of course, it's all that pressure in between that's hard to make it through.) A big weekend is coming up in Wilburton, as we prepare for the annual Alumni Banquet, when people who graduated from good old WHS for years on back come back home to visit with old friends and attend class reunions. Chances are, quite a few of them went on to attend EOSC, and will possibly also want to make a stop on our campus to see their old haunts here. April 21 Message-ID: <4DB03D52.1020107@eosc.edu> Hi folks, There's a chance of rain being given for the next week or so, and we could really use it, as water levels are down in our area lakes and ponds, including our city's water supply, and this almost constant wind we've been having really dries everything out quickly. I know no one wants rain on Easter or the night of the Alumni Banquet, but we could really use it on some of the other days. Once again we're expecting guests on campus today, as we host the Agriculture Speech Contest. Please make these participants welcome and give them any assistance they may need. We want their experience at Eastern to be a good one. Don't forget to get your tickets to next Thursday's Celebrity Waiter event. Tickets to the fun and nostalgic dinner are $20 per person and include admission to the EOSC Theater production of "Grease". Proceeds from this event, (including all the tips our great celebrity waiters can coerce out of the diners), go to endow a scholarship for theater and music students in memory of Cheri Potter, who was Student Activities Director, Student Government Sponsor, and a driving force here at Eastern for 20 years. Sadly, she lost a battle with cancer last year, but her memory will live on in this scholarship to assist future students at Eastern in realizing their dreams. Many thousands of chocolate rabbits will have their ears bitten off this weekend, I'm sure, and there'll be a lot of tuna salad made next week using all those leftover boiled eggs. I've been listening to Mountaineer Radio this morning, and Doug has had the cast of next week's EOSC production of "Grease", singing songs and plugging their play. Next Thursday evening we will be hosting a Celebrity Waiter event to endow a scholarship for music and theatre students in memory of Cheri Potter, longtime Eastern Student Activities Director and Student Government Sponsor. Tickets are $20 for the old time 50's diner meal and show on Thursday evening, and if you want you can catch the play again on Friday evening. And don't forget today is Earth Day! Do something green for the planet! Be sure and deposit any old paperwork you're ready to discard in the Shred-It bins on campus and help Eastern save a tree. I also went to a program recently given by Danette Russell of the Latimer County office of the OSU Extension Center, giving ideas on how to reuse different things to help keep so much material out of landfills, and sharing some recycling tips. She can be reached at 918-465-3349 for lots of helpful information on this and many more subjects. The city of Wilburton has also begun a recycling program and you can find their "Big Belly" containers for plastic bottles & aluminum cans in various places around town, so don't toss that plastic water or soda bottle or aluminum can in the trash. Recycle it! Our menu for today includes: Goulash or Tuna subs Cream of broccoli soup Fried okra Garlic bread And for dessert, have a Peanut Butter Cookie. April 25 Message-ID: <4DB582F3.8020301@eosc.edu> Hi folks, Our long delayed April showers seem to have been trying to make up for lost time this weekend. After such a long time of hearing how dry it's been in most of our state, and being under a burn ban because everything was so crisp and ready to go up in flames with the least little spark, now we're wet through and through. At least that gives us something new to complain about! We really should be grateful for the rain we've been getting though, as it makes for a long, hot summer in Oklahoma when we haven't had sufficient rain to get through it, and our water supply was getting very low. I know us grownups may not be crazy about getting wet, but I know I've seen kids having a ball hunting Easter eggs in mud puddles! And if you step outside and listen, you can tell the frogs are loving it, too! I walked out to our pond yesterday between showers, and couldn't even begin to count the swarms of tadpoles that have hatched out in it recently. We'll have plenty of frogs singing to us for a long time to come. There was even a little tree frog clinging to our living room window as if he wanted to see what was going on inside. Our menu for today includes: Dorito bake Mexican rice Fresh squash Corn Pinto beans Cornbread And for dessert, have a helping of Bread Pudding. April 28 Message-ID: <4DB97414.9000206@eosc.edu> Hi folks, I was shocked to hear this morning about the devastating tornadoes that rampaged through Alabama and other southern states last night killing dozens of people and leaving a swath of destruction in its wake. It certainly should give us a new appreciation of our storm warning system in Oklahoma and Wilburton in particular. Our local news channels are not shy about disrupting programming to bring up to the minute weather reports when there's any sign of a tornado or other dangerous weather anywhere in their viewing area, and our local Emergency Management Team keeps our area informed of conditions in time to take shelter if necessary. I'm really glad to hear that the city of Wilburton has received a grant to enable them to build several large storm cellars in different locations around the city, even one on campus, I believe. That will be a wonderful addition to our area, making many people who don't have cellars or safe rooms at their homes feel much safer. The big news for today around here is the Celebrity Waiter event and performance of Grease this evening on campus. Tickets to the Celebrity Waiter Dinner Theatre event are $20, and include a 1950's style diner meal of hamburgers, french fries, floats, and whoopie pies in the Ballroom, followed by special reserved seating at the opening performance of Grease in Mitchell Auditorium. Proceeds from the evening's festivities will go to endow a scholarship for music and theater students in memory of Cheri Potter, a longtime Eastern Student Activities Director and Student Government Sponsor who lost her battle with cancer last year. It really made for a long day, (especially for the performers, the Celebrity Waiters and the Cafeteria staff I'm sure), but was well worth it to generate a good chunk of money to kick off the scholarship fund in memory of Cheri Potter through the antics of the various Celebrity Waiter personalities and the generosity of the guests. The performance of Grease was wonderful, but left me with a couple of questions: What's the deal with Chris and his pants? And what's so fascinating in that book Shanna couldn't get her face out of? All kidding aside though, the kids did a great job with this very lively, entertaining show, and Melissa Lee, Dottie Minshall, Paul Enis and Mary Ford and all the others who worked with them are to be commended. The only sad note is that, as with all our spring musicals, it will be the next to last performance at Eastern for several of our students, as they will very soon graduate and go off to continue their educations elsewhere. They should know they will be missed. There will be one more chance to see them though, tonight at 7:30, as they sing, dance, act and ham it up through their very last performance of Grease. Don't miss it! Student Support Services participants who RSVP'd for the graduation luncheon need to be sure and remember that it's today upstairs in the Ballroom at 11:30. Tomorrow's schedule here in the Cafeteria looks to be pretty routine, but Sunday PTK will have their get together in the Ballroom, and immediately following that, we will be having our annual Athletic Banquet, also in the Ballroom. (Scheduled in between those two events, the Wilburton High School graduating class of 2011, will be holding their Baccalaureate service in the P. J.
