Feb. 7 Message-ID: <4D500584.9030000@eosc.edu> Hi folks, Well, business as usual has pretty much been suspended in most of the state for about a week now thanks to the record breaking cold temperatures and snowfall we received last week, along with a healthy dose of sleet, etc. which sent everyone scurrying for the grocery store and to the house to wait out "the blizzard of '11". Conditions were pretty scary for driving or walking, and still are in spots. I actually only fell once, and it wasn't nearly as bad as it could've been, as I fell forward into the snow and was able to catch myself without making a snow angel or a face imprint. I'd have to bet the ground hog didn't even think about coming out of his burrow last Wednesday to see his shadow, and anyone who tried to pull him out into the cold probably drew back a nub. With temperatures remaining below freezing until Saturday, thawing did not occur as fast as we could've wished for, and then it all seemed to happen at once and everything became a muddy mess within a day. My bird feeders were the busiest spots around my house, with all the little birds out there looking for something to eat that wasn't coated in ice. I saw at least 9 different species at my feeder and a few more in the surrounding trees. It was quite a show. I actually saw birds at my feeder that I had never seen at it before. Business division instructor, Tia Kelley, is celebrating a birthday today, by getting to come back to work I guess. Talk about timing! Have a great day anyway, Tia! Our menu for today includes: Chicken spaghetti California blend vegetables Five way mixed vegetables Fried squash Bread sticks And for dessert, have a serving of Lemon Eclair Dessert or some Apple Cobbler. Feb. 8 Message-ID: <4D51598E.4050401@eosc.edu> Hi folks, I hope everyone is braced and ready for round two of our winter weather mess, as it's predicted to hit sometime this evening and continue right on through tomorrow full force. I guess we should be very grateful that, with temperatures predicted to go back up to well above freezing by Friday, this next round of snow shouldn't last long. Then all we'll have left to contend with is a giant dose of mud! A group of about 25 students from Smithville is expected to tour our campus this morning, so be ready to welcome them if they come through your area and give them whatever assistance they may need. EOSC's Biggest Loser contest is scheduled to start today, so take a few minutes out of your busy day between 11:00 and 12:30, to go over to the Fieldhouse and weigh-in with Loma Messex. Bad weather pushed our start date back from last week, but we should be able to at least have a first weigh-in today before any more weather throws a kink in things. If you're interested in promoting the arts in Latimer County and like good food, be sure and attend the Sweetheart Soiree at the White House on campus this Saturday at 7:00. Admission is free, and there will be wonderful food, entertainment, and valet parking to make this fund-raiser for the Latimer County Arts Council a thoroughly enjoyable evening. Be ready to vote with your dollars in the "Tie One On for the Arts" competition. The Cyber Cafe will not be open today, but we will be serving hamburgers as a meat choice on the main line. Our menu for today includes: Meatloaf Hamburgers Broccoli Carrots Brussels Biscuits And for dessert, pick a piece of Pie from our assortment of flavors. If you are registering with this office I need the name of the little cheerleader, their age and their t-shirt size. Little Mountaineers who complete the clinic on Saturday will perform at the conference basketball games against Murray State College on Monday February 21, 2011 6 pm at the half-time of the Ladies game in their clinic t-shirts. I am sorry for the inconvenience but the snow from last week has delayed everything and we need to get those games in so our Ladies and Men can move on to their Region II Conference Championship games the first week of March. We also hope this will give you more time to plan having your little cheerleader participate with us for this clinic. Proceeds from this clinic will go to the Eastern Cheer Team and will be applied to their National Championship competition in Las Vegas in April 2011. I can't even remember when we've been in the negative numbers as far as temperatures go in this part of the world, but they say it was negative 3 or 4 night before last and maybe even last night. That's just unreal. I think it was colder here than it was in parts of Alaska! Happy Birthday wishes go out for this Saturday to Political Science instructor Carter Mattson. At least it'll be warmish rain, and not snow, sleet or ice! Beware though, we're having a full moon this week, and that seems to have a bad effect on some people. I think it even got to our goose, as I have a big goose bite on my arm this morning from a go-around yesterday evening. (Yes, I'm now a victim of goose abuse.) Ouch! Those things can really bite hard! Glad they don't have teeth! They'd really be deadly then. Longtime Eastern fixture, Gaylon Brannon, Meat Lab Manager, will be celebrating a birthday this Sun. Feb. 20, and I hope he has a really great day. It looks like our Baseball Team will be pretty busy for the next few days. Today, they'll be hosting Murray State at 11:00. Tomorrow, they'll be taking on 13th ranked Northeast State in a double header starting at 11:00, followed on Sunday by another double header against Paris at 12:00. Keep up the great playing you've been doing, guys! And since Coach Mace has ordered sack lunches for the Softball team, I'm betting they have a game somewhere tomorrow, also. Good luck, girls! Our menu for today includes: Beef stroganoff or Hot ham and cheese sandwich Cabbage Sauerkraut with little smokies Corn And for dessert, have Chocolate Chip Cookies or Ice Cream. We'll be back in full operation as soon as we get everyone well and back at work. We will have BBQ on a bun and French Fries in the Cafeteria in order to offer more than one main food choice. I just heard on Mountaineer Radio that tonight is our Mountaineers' and Lady Mountaineers' last home games. Tell all the basketball fans you know and come help pack the house for them at 6:00 and 8:00 this evening. It'll be Eastern vs. Western, and we need a good crowd to cheer on our home team. And Thurs. at 1:30 and 7:30, and Fri. at 7:30, our Theatre Dept. will present "Eastern on the Edge", a variety of performances by Melissa Lee's theatre students that should be very interesting and entertaining. She does caution though, that some of the content is not appropriate for children, so please find a sitter for the evening, as it should be adults only in the theatre for this show. Another event well worth mentioning that will be happening on campus this coming Monday, Feb. 28, will be Dr. Najwa Raouda discussing recent events in the Middle East, and what it is like to be a Muslim woman in America, and reading from her book The Feminine Voice of Islam: Muslim Women in America. Please contact Ruth Brelsford at Ext. 762, or 465-1762 from off campus, for more information on this event. It's not suitable for children, but should be very entertaining for adults. There will be a PAWS meeting this evening at 7:00 at the Latimer County Public Library, so if you're a dog lover and would like to get involved in something worthwhile that benefits animals and the community, come learn more about our organization this evening. Our menu for today includes: Sausage jambalaya Baked potatoes Fried okra Steamed cabbage Black eyed peas Hot rolls or Grilled chicken sandwich French Fries And for dessert, have a piece of Strawberry Cake. I hope I get a chance to get upstairs to the Ballroom and see them. They are always fascinating and very creative. Tonight is the final performance for Eastern on the Edge, so don't miss it. It will begin at 7:30 in Mitchell Auditorium. Melissa Lee cautions it is not appropriate for children, so find a sitter, or take them to the grandparents, and come on out to enjoy this entertaining performance. Good luck to our Softball girls today as they travel to Murray State in Tishomingo for a tournament. Our menu for today will include: Chicken strips Hamburgers (These 2 items will be served in the Cyber Cafe & the main line) Baked beans Corn on the cob Salad bar And for dessert, we have Cookies. Feb. 28 Message-ID: <4D6BBA65.3080904@eosc.edu> Hi folks, And the winner is... No, I'm not talking about the Academy Awards, not the Emmys, the Oscars, the Tonys or what have you. Eastern's own version of the best of the best has been decided for another year, with Mr. Keith Lewis, our Multimedia Communications Manager, and a 34 year EOSC veteran, being named the winner of the J. C. Hunt Award for the professional or support staff employee who has exhibited exemplary service as recognized by their peers, and Mrs. Ruth (Askew) Brelsford, Speech Instructor, Honors Program Coordinator, and Department Chair, being named recipient of the President's Excellence in Teaching Award. She's a relative short-timer compared to Keith, having been employed with Eastern only since 1999, but she's definitely made a tremendous positive impact on many lives in that span of time, and is now getting the recognition she deserves. Congratulations to both of these wonderful people! Several things will be happening on campus today and this evening, starting with Dr. Najwa Raouda speaking in the President's Dining room at 3:00 on current events in the Muslim world and how that affects all of us. At 4:30 she will compare and contrast her own book, THE FEMININE VOICE OF ISLAM: Muslim Women in America, to two other popular books on college campuses today, and at 7:30, she will read from her book and have copies available for signing. Cookies and punch will be provided and served by Latimer County Arts Council members. Fiddler/violin player extraordinaire, Michael Ginsburg will be delivering a short but meaningful anti-drug message to dorm residents at 6:00 p.m. in Mitchell Auditorium, and auditions for the upcoming performance of Grease will take place from 6:30 to 10:30 in the Pratt Little Theatre. Our menu for today includes: Lasagna Corn Green beans Steamed red potatoes Carrots Hot rolls And for dessert, how can you pass up a piece of Cherry Cheesecake?
