On the spring schedule, the class is listed as Journ-1113-7188 (3702). Feel free to contact me if you have any questions. Jan. 3, 2011 Happy New Year! Message-ID: <4D21F337.3030809@eosc.edu> Hi folks, Well, some of us are back at work, scrambling to catch up after being off for some time. (That's the down side of all this wonderful time off, but hey, we'll deal with it.) I hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas and terrific New Year. I enjoyed my break, except for the week I had the bad cold. That I could've done without. It was the week of Christmas, and I had to take cold medicine to sleep comfortably at night. I saw on the news where there was going to be an eclipse one night, and let my daughter know to wake me up so I could see it when it occurred, as she was going to be out in the boonies watching it with some friends, where street lights would not interfere or diminish the show. She called me as requested, and I got my groggy, medicated self out of bed and went out to watch the rare spectacle until my neck couldn't stand it anymore and I went back to bed. The next morning early, I was annoyed awake by a repetitive, strange, slightly vibrating sound, along with our goose, doing his usual loud honking call. It gradually dawned on my fuzzy brain that all that noise was not the goose. The other noise sounded like some sort of strange beeping horn or something, and I couldn't begin to imagine what it was. I finally hauled myself out of bed and over to the window, where I looked out and beheld, of all things...no, not a partridge in a pear tree, or Santa and his reindeer, or even Bigfoot...but a white peacock! My first thought was, "No one is going to believe this, especially if they find out I took cold medicine last night!", so to avoid all the grief from the doubting Thomases, I whipped out my cell phone and began taking pictures of the unusual bird, and yelled for my daughter to come and see it, too. We still don't know where he came from, but I suppose he came to our house after hearing our goose. It was a wild sight to wake up to, I'll tell you. If anyone knows anything about proper peacock care we could probably use some peacock pointers. So far we've just been feeding him corn and bird seed, and letting him peck around in the yard with the goose, but he seems happy enough, and only flies when our cats try to chase after him. Our menu for today includes: Salisbury steak Chicken strips Mashed potatoes and gravy Prince Edward blend vegetables California blend vegetables Brussels sprouts Hot rolls And for dessert, have a helping of delicious Chocolate Cake. Have a great day, Rhoda :-) -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... This is a long email, but I hope you will take the time to read all of it. Student Support Services is once again asking for your help. We are participating in the TRiO Day(Feb. 23, OK State Capitol) project which is partnering with "The Hugs Project", a nonprofit organization that is dedicated to improve the quality of life for our men and women in uniform by providing hugs (cool ties), kisses (helmet coolers), necessities and small comforts from home. Please take time to participate in our community service component of TRiO Day. Student Support Service will place boxes in each building, or you may call one of the SSS staff for pick up. We will have boxes at the McAlester Campus. (Idabel, if you would like to help, please contact me, June Haynes, 918 465 1822, and I will talk to Tammie and work something out.) These projects really are a great opportunity for our community and our students to become involved in giving to others! Please refer to the following list when gathering your contributions! Let's get busy! These folks deserve all that we can do for them! Cool-ties are made from strips of 100% cotton with watersorb polymer granules inside. (You may have seen these at craft shows.) Jan. 4, 2011 Message-ID: <4D233EB1.20408@eosc.edu> Hi folks, I'm still trying to get myself back in synch with my work schedule, rather than my "time off staying up as late and sleeping as late as I feel like it" schedule. There are probably a lot of us out there who are still a little out of kilter, but at least this week is a pretty slow one as far as most Cafeteria business goes, with not too many students back in residence yet. Next week, we'll have to be back on the ball though, as classes will begin and faculty and students alike will be back to the business of educating and being educated. It's hard to believe that in just a few short months we'll be graduating another batch of students we've spent 2 years getting to know and love. Speaking of Cafeteria business, we will be open regular hours this week for Breakfast, 7:00 a.m. to 8:45 a.m, and regular hours for Lunch, 11:00 a.m. to 1:45 p.m. I have been informed that Dinner will be served from 5:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. (I think we informed Coach Edgar yesterday that we would be serving from 4:30 p.m. to 6:15 p.m., but this has been changed. Sorry for any inconvenience or confusion this may have caused.) The dinner meal all this week will be Cyber Cafe items, and not the usual Cafeteria line meal. Things should go back to a normal schedule starting next week. Our menu for today includes: Tuna sub and chips OR Meatloaf Mashed potatoes and gravy Corn Green beans Macaroni and cheese Hot rolls And for dessert, have some yummy Chocolate Chip Cookies. It seems strange to think this is the "Spring" semester when it's cold outside and all the trees are bare. The good news is, by now, we're getting a tiny bit more daylight each day, and I'd swear there are already birds scoping out nesting spots outside! I guess it pays to plan ahead. Happy Birthday wishes go out today to Gear Up's George Larson. He's a really nice fellow and I hope he has big fun today! Our Mountaineers and Lady Mountaineers have basketball games scheduled for today again Mid-South in our fieldhouse. The ladies will play at 5:00 and the men's game will be at 7:00, so if you're a basketball fan, come on out and cheer our teams on to victory! And the Tournament of Champions is coming up in our gym over the next 3 days, featuring some of the best teams in the state. I've also been hearing announcements on EOSC radio for the upcoming Harlem Ambassadors basketball exhibition game scheduled for next Tues. Jan. 18. This should be some show with the Ambassadors challenging a team of local VIP's to see who can be "kings of the court". Contact the Wilburton Chamber of Commerce for tickets to this fun event. Don't forget, dinner this week will be through the Cyber Cafe. Our menu for today includes: BBQ and chips OR Pork loin Mashed potatoes and gravy Fried okra Green beans Corn Hot rolls And for dessert, try an early taste of summer, with some luscious Peach Cobbler. Better get the big coat, gloves, de-icer, windshield scraper, etc. located. There might even be snow this weekend! Maybe those birds I thought were scoping out nesting spots yesterday were just looking for a nice warm, snug place to roost in when it gets really cold! Like I said, it pays to plan ahead. Jan. 11, 2011 Message-ID: <4D2C7FA1.8010401@eosc.edu> Hi folks, Well, that's one way to start a semester, by having an unexpected snow day! (I'd just like to know how Brenda Kennedy arranged to have a snow day on her birthday!) I had really expected more snow yesterday from listening to the weather reports, but I sometimes forget that they are usually concentrating more on the Tulsa area than down here in Latimer County, so we were able to dodge that bullet. Looking at the Weather Channel Desktop on my computer though, it doesn't look like we'll be having much in the way of a temperature for the next couple of days, (barely making it to freezing), so please take any precautions you can to protect your pets that have to be outside. The best things for dogs and cats, is to be able to be inside your home, garage or other outbuilding with some warm bedding, unless you want to sleep outside with them to keep them warm. (I didn't think so.) Reminder to students: Please go ahead and bring your student ID card with you when you come for meals. They may not all work in the scanner yet, but they should soon, and you need to be in the habit of having your ID with you. Happy Birthday wishes go out today to Lucy Shelly (formerly Kidd) of the Cafeteria. I hope she has a fun day and doesn't freeze up. I'm just looking forward to seeing temperatures warm enough to thaw things out a little bit. Starting with me. The sooner the better. I missed getting to wish Helen (the Great) Scott a Happy Birthday yesterday in my menu due to being a little under the weather myself, but I hope she had a happy one, and has many more to come. Jan. 24 Message-ID: <4D30769B.1050208@eosc.edu> Hi folks, Well, we've made it to Friday without freezing up entirely, and they say we might even have a temperature today, which beats the heck out of the nearly nothing temperatures we've been enduring this past week. I know we've still got plenty of winter left, but I'm glad we got this whole week of the really frigid part behind us. Our basketball teams travelled to Carl Albert at Poteau yesterday evening, and while the girls weren't able to bring home a win, our boys did emerge victorious. This, in itself, might not be such a big deal, but this was evidently their 5th win in a row, and Coach Scott Edgar had made them a promise that if they won 5 games in a row, they could shave his head. This is supposed to take place here in the Cafeteria at noon, so if you want to come see the team get their "reward" for their winning streak, come on over. I think it might be a 2 for 1 deal, with Scott Jr.'s hair being part of the deal, also. Happy Birthday wishes go out this Saturday to history and political science instructor Cathy Cogburn and Carla Noah of the Cafeteria. I hope they enjoy their big day. And look out world! The only difference here in the Cafeteria is that the Cyber Cafe will be closed at lunch but we will be offering those delicious steak melts that everyone loves as one of our lunch choices. Our Mountaineers and Lady Mountaineers will be taking on NEO this evening here in our fieldhouse, so come on out for some great basketball action. It'll happen before too long, but I think we're still in for some winter weather before it does. (They're even threatening possible snow this Thursday!) I noticed on the weather this morning that there were lots of closings in the northeastern part of the state, around Tulsa, and looking outside, I thought we had just gotten rain, but when I went out to get in the car, I could tell it was sleet, and that my windshield needed scraped. Since then, I've heard Dougo on the radio (in early due to weather announcements), letting everyone know that Wilburton Public Schools will be closed today. Broke my daughter's heart. (That's sarcasm, you know.) I guess it's a good thing that it's Thursday and there are fewer classes in session on campus than on Monday, Wednesday or Friday. I believe the precipitation, in whatever form it takes, is supposed to be over around noon, so maybe things will be back to normal by tomorrow. We got some ice and snow, but not nearly as bad as it could've been. They're still plowing and digging out in Tulsa and other parts of the state, but I think we've bounced back pretty quickly. Except for vehicle batteries at my house. Turns out, my vehicle was the only one that would start this morning. My daughter went out to start her car for school and it wouldn't cooperate. She went in to get her dad to help her, and when he got to his truck to start it, it was deader than her car! Our neighbor was gone, so they had to call me to come back home and rescue them. I think it's time to buy a new battery, (or maybe two). Teach your students the importance of service work by having them organize a collection campaign on campus. They can make presentations to Student Government, partner with student clubs/organizations, and post flyers on campus. What items should be collected? See the list above. How should the items be packaged? Items do not need to be packaged in a specific manner-just bring the items in an unsealed box! The Hugs Project will organize and package the items before shipping. Why are you asking for letters? These soldiers are stationed away from family and friends-it's difficult to be disconnected from those at home. The letters are a personalized way to let them know we support them and appreciate all they do. Is there a format for the letter? A template for the letters has been designed and is attached. What does the letter need to say? Students should be encouraged to express their appreciation in their own manner and in their own words. How should the letters be delivered? Letters should be collected and placed together in an unsealed envelope or folder. It is not necessary to put each individual letter in an envelope. When and where will items be collected? Boxes and letters will be collected the morning of TRiO Day, outside the Oklahoma State Capitol. We aren't attending TRiO Day-can we still participate? Yes! You will find a list below. PLEASE HELP! How can we participate? Participate by collecting donated items and letters of thanks for our soldiers. How do we secure donations? Yes! Feel free to send your items with a colleague who will be attending! February 23, 2011 . State Capitol Building . 7:00 am -9:30 am Donations will be accepted by designated TRiO professionals at select locations prior to TRiO Day. Jan. 25 Message-ID: <4D3ED5EE.9090504@eosc.edu> Hi folks, A very nice day is predicted with temperatures getting up around 50 or so today, and supposed to get even better for the next week or so. I'm officially ready for spring. I saw a flock of robins fluttering and splashing in a roadside puddle this weekend, and as they are considered the harbinger or spring, the sight really gave my spirits a lift. And if that wasn't enough, I was in the Dollar Store yesterday and they have this year's new gardening supplies out for sale already. When I start seeing the first yard sale ads in the local paper, I'll know spring is getting really close! The upcoming spring-like weather will make it easier to get out and start exercising for those of us who have been cooped up in the house way too much this winter. The EOSC Biggest Loser contest will kick off next week, so if you're serious about participating and winning, better get your strategy planned out. The contest will run for 15 weeks or so, and will cost $30 to enter, ($2 a week), and the physical reward will be worth so much more in terms of your health and quality of life. Be sure and tune into Mountaineer Radio, at www.radio.eosc.edu, every morning to listen to Dougo and some really great music, news of local events, items of interest from all over, great giveaways, birthday announcements, and much more. You can call in a request to 918-465-6000, or email it to radio at eosc.edu. Our menu for today includes: Roast beef Grilled chicken breast Mashed potatoes and gravy English peas Broccoli Zucchini and tomatoes Hot rolls And for dessert, choose from Chocolate, Butterscotch or Pecan Pie. Delicious! Have a great day, Rhoda :-) -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Jan. 26 Message-ID: <4D4027F6.1040206@eosc.edu> Hi folks, Today and the next few days are promising to be great, with temperatures in the 50's and even 60's on Friday! It should be great weather to start getting out and getting the yard in shape for spring. There will be a Latimer County Arts Council Meeting Thursday evening at 6:00 at the Gallery downtown for any of you who might be interested in promoting the arts in Latimer county, and a PAWS (Partners for Animal Welfare) meeting at 7:00 at the Latimer Public Library for animal lovers who are concerned with the plight of homeless dogs (and cats) in Wilburton. If you've made a New Year's resolution to be more involved in things, either of these two organizations would be a great place to start, and both could use your help and input. Our menu for today includes: Baked ham Sweet potato casserole Steamed red potatoes Green beans Corn California blend vegetables Hot rolls And for dessert have some Banana Pudding. Jan. 31 Message-ID: <4D46CC46.5070406@eosc.edu> Hi folks, Last Friday and Saturday were absolutely gorgeous. The only fault I could find was the smoke in the air from several large fires in several different directions. Unfortunately, yesterday began to take a different turn, and from what I'm hearing, by tonight, things could get pretty bad. It seems like every time I look a the weather report the projected temperatures for later this week drop again. (Maybe I should stop looking, huh?) At any rate, like it or not, be prepared for nasty, cold and slick in the morning. Don't forget, Eastern's Biggest Loser contest starts tomorrow, with weigh-ins with Loma Messex in the Fieldhouse from 11:00 to 12:30. If the weather interferes with this, the Staff Council will inform everyone of how we are going to handle the situation, possibly with a slightly delayed start date.
