I enjoyed mine. I was really glad we got some rain yesterday, at least in our neck of the woods. My plants got a good watering, and my rain barrel is full again. It cooled things off, at least temporarily also, and that was a very welcome relief. Plants that I've been watering faithfully for weeks, that have done nothing but droop and look like they were dying, popped up and acted like they might live after all! I guess they needed a little relief from the heat, too! Water alone just wasn't enough. According to my calendar, Upward Bound will finish up this week, with another successful summer camp under their belts. That won't be the end of summer camps on campus though, as I show that Nursing Boost Camp and Church of Christ Singing School Camp are still to come before the summer is over. Our menu for today includes: Dorito bake Mexican rice Pinto beans Baked potato bar Fresh squash Corn Cornbread And for dessert, have a piece of luscious Lemon Cake. Have a great day at Eastern, Rhoda :-) -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... July 6 Message-ID: <4E146BCE.3000607@eosc.edu> Hi folks, I really hope today is not as hot as yesterday was. I think it got up to 103 yesterday! Today is only supposed to get up to around 99 according to the Weather Channel on my computer. (Somehow ONLY 99 sounds like a ridiculous statement. Only 99 might apply to slight fever, but not a weather temperature.) I went outside yesterday evening and leaves were falling off the trees with no wind blowing. And we've got 2 months of this heat to go! Thank God for air conditioning! Nursing instructor, Sonya Kuykendall, informed me that the Nursing Boost camp that is being held today in the Ballroom is a special introductory session to help prepare our incoming freshman nursing students for their first semester of college. Sounds like a wonderful thing for them to take advantage of, and I saw several students headed upstairs a while ago to do just that. (Glad it's Boost camp and not BOOT camp. I don't think they'd go for those awful haircuts and all that marching in this heat!) Upward Bound camp will end this week, but we will still have a few of their students staying to complete some college courses they are enrolled in. These kids are getting a jump on their college educations. Our menu for today includes: Brisket Mashed potatoes and gravy California blend vegetables Corn on the cob Broccoli and rice casserole Hot rolls And for dessert, have a Rice Krispie Treat. July 7 Message-ID: <4E15C01F.4030609@eosc.edu> Hi folks, Wow! I just looked at the extended forecast on the Weather Channel on my computer and the upcoming temperatures look like a string of really good grades, but really bad temperatures. Lots of 100's and high 90's coming. Be sure and take precautions to stay hydrated if you have to be out in this heat. (It's a much better idea to get any outside activities taken care of early when it's still somewhat cool, or late, when the sun starts going down.) And keep plenty of water out for any outdoor pets you may have. It's much better to bring them in during extreme weather like this, but that isn't always possible, so be sure and try and make them as comfortable as possible. Make sure they have some shade to lie in to get out of the sun during the day. I've even heard of people putting sunblock on the noses of white dogs as they tend to sunburn just like people do. There will be a Staff Council meeting this afternoon at 2:00 in the Library Conference Room if anyone is interested in attending. We will be discussing the upcoming picnic, and the planned Blue and Gold Rush fundraiser, among other things. Birthdays in our EOSC family this weekend include Lynn Hackworth, Executive Assistant to Vice President LaDonna Howell, who will celebrate her big day tomorrow, and Math Instructor and Wilburton City Councilman, Terry Haynes will be celebrating his birthday on Saturday. Most of our Upward Bound kids will be leaving after this week, but there will still be a few with us until the regular summer semester ends, as they are getting a jump on college by squeezing in a summer class before the regular fall semester begins. Our menu for today includes: Chicken parmesan Green beans Fresh squash Fresh spinach Hot rolls And for dessert, have your choice of Strawberry or Apple Cobbler. (Great with some of our soft serve ice cream on top!) Keep cool and have a great weekend, Rhoda :-) -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... July 11 Message-ID: <4E1B0C42.4050308@eosc.edu> Hi folks, Looks like another string of scorchers coming up! Take any precautions you can to avoid being out in this heat, or if you MUST be out in it, to stay hydrated and as cool as possible. That goes for your pets, too. I wouldn't recommend taking them with you in the car if you would have to leave them at all, as it gets WAY TOO HOT as soon as the air conditioning shuts off, and it's not a good idea to leave a pet in a car, running or otherwise in this heat for any length of time. And be sure and have plenty of water available for them to drink. That's an absolute life saver in this heat. I was very sad to see that our Athletic Director and Baseball Coach, Aric Thomas, is leaving us, but what an opportunity for him to go on to coach at OU! Aric, I know we all wish you and your family the very best as you go on to "the Big Leagues". Since I'm planning on working today (had to come in and get out time sheets, OR ELSE!) and being off the rest of the week, I'll go ahead and wish a very Happy Birthday this Wednesday to three of our Eastern Family: Betty Eason, Debbie Layton and Kristen Turner. I hope all these ladies have a very special day. Anyone interested in helping get a Community Theatre Group started should come to The Gallery on Main Street on Sat. July 16, at 1:00 for an exploratory meeting. If you've always wanted to get out there in the spotlight, or maybe work the spotlight, help with costumes, sing, dance or whatever, come and visit with other theatre lovers, and lets see what we can get going. It's free and painless, and should be interesting and entertaining. There is a PAWS adoption day scheduled for this Friday at PetSense in McAlester. Go find yourself a new best friend who needs a home and has lots of love to give. And don't forget next Monday, July 18, is RECYCLING DAY at the OSU Extension (County Barn) parking lot. Bring your old batteries, clean pesticide containers, paper and magazines, cardboard, #1 & #2 plastic bottles, aluminum cans, clean steel cans, ink cartridges and old tires (sorry, no tractor or ATV tires), and and join our Extension Center crew and the Choctaw Nation in GOING GREEN! For more information, call Tony Johnson at the Extension Center office, at 918-465-3349, or drop by and visit with him. I guess the thought of coming back to a desk full of a week's worth of paperwork to catch up on somehow just isn't as appealing to me as my nice cool, quiet, peaceful time sitting outside listening to the birds sing and watching the cats and dogs playing. (I've been digging through papers all morning to uncover my desk. Wish me luck with that!) Our Singing School campers are back with us this week, and according to yesterday's numbers, they have more campers than they had expected, so that's a good thing. This group has been coming to Eastern for their summer camp for many years and it's always a treat when they sing for us on their last day! Don't forget today is Recycle Day at the OSU Extension Center. Book Buyback is scheduled for this Wed. from 3:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the McAlester campus, at Idabel on Thursday from Noon to 3:00 p.m., and at Antlers, also on Thursday, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Sounds like Ali's going to have a very busy week! It looks like Recycling Day was a huge success yesterday at the OSU Extension Center. When I drove by, they had enough recycleable tires in their parking lot to build a fort, (Fort Tony?), along with bags and bags of other items to be recycled. They have partnered with the Choctaw Nation to host this event and I believe there is another one scheduled in the fall, so be watching for it and saving back all your recycleable items to bring. The new Fall Semester is always exciting, bringing new students, and usually some new faculty to meet and get to know. This time it'll be twice as exciting for me, as my daughter will be one of those new Eastern students joining us here. Monday, July 25th, the Cafeteria will be closed so that floor maintenance can be done in the Student Center. This work will begin on Sunday, July 24th, when both doors to the building will be locked. Then on Monday, the South door will be unlocked to allow for access to the Post Office, Bookstore, ATM, etc. We're sorry for this necessary inconvenience, but the end result should be well worth it. We definitely want to have the building looking nice for the new semester. Don't forget Book Buyback at the McAlester campus takes place today from 3:00 to 8:00 p.m., tomorrow at Idabel from Noon to 3:00 p.m., and Antlers from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., and is ongoing this week at our Wilburton campus in the Bookstore. Since I won't be here tomorrow I'd like to send out early Happy Birthday wishes to Student Support Services Advisor, June Haynes, as she prepares to celebrate her special day this coming Saturday, July 23rd. I couldn't believe it when I woke up this morning to hear the little spatterings of raindrops hitting the poor, dry leaves on the trees and the crispy grass of our brown lawn. We did get a little shower this weekend at our house, though, and I give my husband the credit for that, because all he had to do was suggest that we should grill and the thunder began! (Why didn't he do that a couple of months ago?) My rain barrels are filling up again, and that should take care of my watering needs for plants and outside pets for quite some time. The Cyber Cafe is open today until 3:00 p.m., after the Cafeteria being closed yesterday for floor maintenance. July 27 Cyber Cafe Open! Message-ID: <4E302341.7020009@eosc.edu> Hi folks, Looking around outside you'd almost think it had rained grasshoppers yesterday instead of much needed water! There are just multitudes of them everywhere! I'm surprised any of the trees and shrubs have any leaves left that haven't been shredded by these aggravating bugs. Unfortunately, they seem to be the one thing that thrives in this extremely hot, mostly dry weather. Very Happy Birthday wishes go out today to EOSC Forestry Instructor Eddie Woods. Eddie is a great guy who must love to grill because he very generously volunteered to do the grilling for the EOSC Family Picnic last year and has volunteered to do so again this year, and is generally one of the regular cooks for local 4H activities. I sometimes think he and 4H leader Tony Johnson are in a race for the lifetime burger flipping record. We might have to hire them part time here in the Cafeteria. Once again today, the Cyber Cafe will be open until 2:30 to take your order. Menu choices are as follows: Hamburgers Cheeseburgers Grilled chicken sandwiches Steak melts Chicken strips and French fries Have a great day at Eastern, Rhoda :-) -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... July 28 Cyber Cafe Open! New Item! Message-ID: <4E3176FD.3060008@eosc.edu> Hi folks, There will be an EOSC Family Picnic planning meeting today at 2:00 in the Library Conference room for anyone who wants to help with this project. The picnic, originally slated for Sat. Aug. 27, has tentatively been pushed back to October. Once we determine the availability of the pavilion at Robber's Cave, we should be able to settle on a specific (cooler) date and get the word out so people can make plans to attend this fun family event. And this evening at 7:00, there will be a PAWS meeting in the Latimer County Public Library for anyone interested in the plight of homeless dogs in the area. We are still desperately trying to find a suitable building to host a low cost spay and neuter clinic once a month or so in the Wilburton area. Getting a clinic of this type started in Wilburton would cut down drastically on the amount of neglected and stray animals locally, and also cut down on the number of homeless animals that are taken to the pound to face death if they are not adopted out in a timely manner. Our hearts go out to EOSC custodian Paula Ogden who lost two sons and two granddaughters yesterday evening in a tragic accident in the Quinton area. Please keep her and her family in your prayers. The Cyber Cafe will be open again today rather than the main Cafeteria line, and menu choices will include: Hamburgers Cheeseburgers Steak melts Grilled chicken sandwiches and French fries We will also be featuring a NEW "Chicken Fried Chicken Sandwich" for $4.25. Keep cool, Rhoda 8-) -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... URL: http://lists.onenet.net/pipermail/eoscstudents/attachments/20110728/18e21372/attachment.html
