Message-ID: <4DE6446A.2090003@eosc.edu> Hi folks and Happy June! It's hard to believe that June has arrived already! Man, time really does fly whether you're having fun or not! From the looks of the forecast on the Weather Channel, we're set to start in on about a week of days with temperatures up in the 90's. That's a little early to start that as far as I'm concerned, but I wasn't asked. I'd be willing to rock on for several more weeks in the 70's or maybe 80's before we broke into the extreme temperatures. Our second Gear Up camp starts today, and we have Upward Bound going on, so we're going to be pretty busy feeding kids for a while. Some people have the mistaken notion that we close up during the summer or that it slows down, but a great deal of the time, it seems busier than ever with all the various groups coming and going, juggling schedules, etc. Yesterday ended an era at Eastern. Hank Mooney, long time Director of Public Information here at Eastern, officially retired after decades here at his home away from home. I see a lot of fishing in his future. He ate in the Cafeteria yesterday and was telling me about having gone fishing this past weekend and his granddaughter skunked everybody! I'm sure they were both proud! Sounds like Hank will have a little fishing buddy for sure there. He did promise to be back every week for Kiwanis meetings, though, so we'll be able to see him and keep up with all his goings ons, hear some more fish stories, etc. Our menu for today includes: Pork chops or Chili dogs and Fries Mashed potatoes and gravy Fried okra Navy beans Brussels sprouts Cornbread Biscuits And for dessert, choose from a selection of pies, including Lemon, Chocolate and Butterscotch. And don't forget, the Cyber Cafe will be open today! Have a great day at Eastern, Rhoda :-) -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... June 2 Message-ID: <4DE79C09.1070708@eosc.edu> Hi folks, This has been a short and sweet but busy week. It sounds like the mass confusion that had taken over the bottom floor of the Library building with all the offices moving is coming under control somewhat, now that the offices are temporarily relocated into Choctaw Hall. I haven't ventured over there yet to see for myself, but I'll have to sometime today as I have bills to be paid and need to get some change and check our mail. I'm glad Linda Enis sent out a list of "who's on first" over there. I've printed that off and will definitely be taking it with me. I've only been in that building a couple of times, so I'll definitely need a "map". Congratulations go out to Bookstore Manager Ali Martinez, who recently achieved a goal many people never do. She earned her Bachelors degree! She is now the proud and knowledgeable recipient of a Bachelor in Science degree from Southeastern in Durant, with a major in Psychology. It's wonderful that the technology is in place so that students can do this entirely on line, as Ali did, and not have to move to a bigger college town, or drive back and forth every day. I know she struggled to find time to do this amid her other activities, working full time as our Bookstore Manager, helping with PAWS, attending church, and still having time for her family and her beloved dogs. PAWS will be having a meeting this evening at 6:00 in the Latimer County Public Library. This is actually our May meeting which was postponed last week in order to allow us to hold an adoption day to find homes for several pound dogs, as the pound was becoming overcrowded, and sadly, when this happens, sometimes the decision is made to have the dogs killed. We wanted to avoid this if at all possible, so decided to postpone our May meeting until June 2 in order to have the adoption day, which turned out very successfully, allowing several wonderful dogs to find homes with families and not have to be returned to the pound and an uncertain future. I'm happy to report that tomorrow my mother, Lillie Hayes, will celebrate her 94th birthday! Born in 1917, she's certainly seen a lot of changes in her lifetime. Like many Okies, she resided in California for a while in order to find employment, but moved back home many years ago and has lived in Oklahoma (Bengal and Wilburton) for the majority of her life. She still has a way to go to catch up with her mother who lived to be 99 years and 1 month, and her older sister, who recently passed away at the ripe old age of 108! Our menu for today includes: Cube steak or BBQ on a bun with Fries California blend vegetables Green beans Corn Hot rolls And for dessert, get dirty, with some Mississippi Mud Cake. June 6 Message-ID: <4DECE25C.7080907@eosc.edu> Hi folks, Man it seemed like my weekend was busy and the heat didn't help any! Friday was Mom's 94th birthday and we went over to spend time with her, and made her a birthday cake, but she felt too bad to eat any. I wound up spending the night with her just to make sure she was going to be okay. Saturday I had PAWS pen duty, and Sunday I had to take my daughter and some friends to church camp at Honobia. I hope they get to swim a lot or find something else to do to keep cool, as this is supposed to be one of the hottest weeks for this time of year in quite a while. I thought I saw Bigfoot crossing the road on my way back, but it might have just been a deer. I was looking for him though! If it was him, he was probably heading for somewhere cooler! I have been enjoying sitting outside in the evenings when it cools down some. Our mimosa tree is blooming and you can hear the hummingbirds visiting the blooms way up in the tree, and I've got a bunch of beautiful, bright yellow day lilies in bloom. My clematis vines are full of purple blooms and covering my arch and trailing down the fence. The only downside is the hungry mosquitos, but if I spray something around for that, they back off and then I can enjoy the nice evening temperatures! This year's Gear Up camps finished up on Saturday, so that crew can get some rest now and start preparing for next year. I'm sure they're all breathing a sigh of relief! Our menu for today includes: Chicken alfredo Baby carrots Mixed vegetables Brussels sprouts Steamed baby red potatoes And for dessert have a piece of Cheesecake! June 7 Message-ID: <4DEE2E3A.105@eosc.edu> Hi folks, Looks like another hot day coming up in a string of them. Seems like we're getting plunged into summer all at once instead of little by little this year. The best time of the day as far as I'm concerned is in the evening when it cools down. My days are spent alternating between my cold office and hot outdoors, but the evenings are great, sitting outside enjoying the outdoors, (as long as I've got mosquito repellent). I've almost got some little cherry tomatoes ripe, and some of the larger variety on the way, Gary's squash and cucumbers are coming right on up, and so far my little cantaloupe plants are holding their own. I noticed a toad in the bed with them the other morning, so maybe he'll keep the bad bugs off them for me. Anyone interested in helping with the next EOSC Picnic should attend the meeting today at 1:00 in the Library Conference Room, and everyone is welcome to attend the Staff Council Meeting immediately following. I've got an umbrella here in my office in case it rains, but I'm thinking of putting it to use to keep the sun off me when I have to walk to the other building! At least a little shade would help. Don't forget to leave plenty of water for any pets you may have to leave outdoors in this heat, and make sure they have a shady spot they can get in to avoid the extreme temperatures caused by exposure to direct sunlight. And make sure and water your outdoor plants as they will dry out pretty quickly in these temperatures with no rain. Be sure and tune into Mountaineer Radio at www.radio.eosc.edu and listen to Dougo from 8:00 to 11:00, playing great music, sharing stories of interest, interviews, and lots of other informative and entertaining goodies. And the great music doesn't end when he leaves. You can listen to Mountaineer Radio 24-7 from your internet connection, so go ahead and tune in! June 9 Message-ID: <4DF0CFF9.3080809@eosc.edu> Hi folks, Well, for most of you here at EOSC, this will be the end of your work week, but here in the Cafeteria we have one of our busiest days coming up tomorrow with the big annual Choctaw Nation GED Graduation Dinner being held here on campus tomorrow evening. There are people from all over the area that attend this graduation ceremony and the following dinner. They always seem to be well pleased with our new Student Center facility and the wonderful dinner they are served. Our Board of Regents will be on campus today for their monthly meeting and luncheon. The Sunbelt Classic is coming right up, as is the summer Children's Theatre Workshop. My little cherry tomatoes have started ripening the last few days, and I went out and had one as a little pre-breakfast snack before I came to work this morning. I'm looking forward to more and bigger home grown tomatoes as the summer wears on. I've been faithfully watering them every evening, so I'm hoping they'll keep producing for quite a while. This is my first year to really grow any tomatoes (outside of pots, and that didn't work well), and I'm really amazed that I haven't killed them yet! Our menu for today includes: Lasagna (Love It!) Green beans Corn Sauerkraut with little smokies Garlic bread And for dessert, have a helping of delicious Blackberry Cobbler. It's especially yummy with some of our soft serve vanilla ice cream on top! Have a great day at Eastern, Rhoda :-) -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... No wonder it seems like I'm paying the monthly bills every week! My family and I had a good time at a family reunion (my side of the family) this weekend. There was a good turnout and it's always nice to get together with family you don't get to see that often and catch up on everything. According to my calendar for this week, the Sunbelt Classic is going on, and our Children's Theatre Workshop will be in session, also. We hosted the annual Choctaw Nation GED Graduation dinner Friday evening on campus once again. Those people who think campus just shuts down during the summer really need to think again! Sometimes it seems we're even busier at times during the summer months than we are during the regular school year. June 14 Message-ID: <4DF768A7.5000203@eosc.edu> Hi folks, Looks like another warm day coming up. I found out yesterday that evidently our so called garden needs watering both morning and evening. I don't believe I got around to watering it yesterday morning, so yesterday evening, everything was really droopy! I'm sure I would've been too, if I'd been out in that heat all day without a drink. I made sure and watered this morning before work. It's actually nice out in the mornings and evenings. It's the middle of the day that has us all hunting for shade trees or air conditioning. And always remember to have plenty of water out for any pets that may have to be outside in this heat. I have a couple of water tubs that I always keep filled for whatever comes by needing a drink. I have peeked out at night a few times and seen a 'possum sneaking a drink before wandering on its way to find some dinner. (Sometimes they go around front and eat cat food which irritates my cats, but they have sense enough not to make a big fuss about it.) And of course, the birds love a good bath in the morning. Happy Birthday wishes go out today to instructor Jan Meins. I hope she's having a wonderful summer break, and has a fantastic birthday. For those of you on Rural Water, don't forget the Rural Water meeting tonight at 7:00 at the Wilburton High School Commons Room. And I'm sure all the local rodeo fans are looking forward to this weekend, as the Wilburton Roundup Club hosts the annual rodeo. I hear Belle Starr may even show up for the parade on Saturday, so keep an eye on your valuables! She has been known to rob a few banks in her day. It was so sharp and so loud and seemed so close that we thought something at our house had been hit! At least I didn't have to water everything this morning, and one of my water barrels filled up for use later. The other one, unfortunately, cracked right around the bottom during the extreme cold we had last winter and I need to figure out a way to fix it. Anyone know a surefire method for this? These barrels have stood up to cold temperatures and freezing before, but this past winter when we had several extremely cold days in a row must've been too much for it. Remember, today is the deadline for turning in all bills, etc. to the Business Office! Let's try and keep Linda Enis happy! I think a fireworks stand must've opened somewhere. I was hearing lots of popping in the neighborhood yesterday evening. (And that's before the big clap of thunder!) We have a couple of dogs that will probably be hiding out a lot the next few weeks. My tiny garden has needed watering twice a day for weeks, and I've noticed leaves falling off the trees already. That usually doesn't happen much until later in the summer after weeks of heat and little to no rain. There were lots of clouds on the horizon last night, and lightning in the distance, but no rain for us. The little creek down the hill that was at one time this spring a mere mud puddle, then a raging river, is now back to being drier than a mud puddle. I hope we get some rain before too long to help get us through the rest of the summer. I've been keeping a tub full of water right outside my bedroom window for anything needing a drink, and my little dogs will go on high alert at night if they hear anything outside taking advantage of it. Hearing them start sniffing, growling and woofing to let me know something was out there the other night, I picked up the flashlight, crept to the window and flicked it on, aimed right at the water tub. Our local, busy armadillo was getting a midnight drink and the light flashing on right in his face so startled him that he jumped and landed right in the water tub! Of course that shocked him even further and he immediately jumped right back out and took off for somewhere dark and safe, without nosy little dogs and bright lights, and I'm still laughing at him! Our menu for today includes: Real fried chicken Mashed potatoes and gravy Fried squash Macaroni and cheese Biscuits And for dessert, have some yummy Banana Pudding. June 23 Message-ID: <4E034783.6080509@eosc.edu> Hi folks, Well, we've made it through another week, and are creeping up on the long 4th of July weekend. Also, FYI, our Food Service Manager, Mildred Whisenhunt will be starting an actual, full, two week vacation next week! It's very rare for her to be able to get away from here for that long, (or very long at all), due to the responsibility of running the Cafeteria, so she's really looking forward to this time. The rest of us will still be here holding down the fort while she's gone, ready for business as usual, and if there are any after hours emergencies, I can be reached at 918-448-7494. Birthdays in the EOSC family for this weekend include: Ag Instructor, Mr. Leland Walker who will be turning one year ornier tomorrow, and one of our "Sister Acts", Joyce Bills, our Human Resources director, and Karen Clark, our new Registrar, will be celebrating their big days, Joyce on Saturday, and Karen on Sunday. I hope they all have a wonderful time. There will be lots of guests on campus this evening as we host the annual Upward Bound Parent's Night Dinner, so please make these special guests welcome. Our menu for today includes: Beef stroganoff Baked potatoes California blend vegetables Sweet peas Fried okra Hot rolls And for dessert, have some All American Apple Cobbler. Have a great weekend, Rhoda :-) -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... June 27 Message-ID: <4E089417.8050706@eosc.edu> Hi folks, I was very saddened to hear this weekend that we had lost one of our EOSC family, with the passing of Diamond (formerly Mills) Taylor, Administrative Assistant in Mitchell Hall. She was always pleasant to be around and seemed to have her life heading in a positive direction with the recent publication of a book she had written, and plans to write and publish more. She will be sorely missed by all those she worked for and with, and even more so by her family and friends. According to an email sent out to EOSC by Pres. Smith, viewing will be at Waldrop Funeral Home Wed. from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., and her services will be at Bowers Baptist Church on Thursday morning at 11:00. Please keep her family and loved ones in your prayers during this time of sadness. Just a reminder, this week and next, our Food Service Manager, Mildred Whisenhunt will be on vacation so if you need anything from the Cafeteria, please call my extension, 712, for assistance. For after hours emergencies, I can be reached at 918-448-7494. Our menu for today includes: Hamburger steak or Grilled chicken Mashed potatoes and gravy Green beans Carrots Zucchini and tomatoes Wild rice Hot rolls And for dessert, choose from a variety of Cake. June 28 Message-ID: <4E09DC6D.2030902@eosc.edu> Hi folks, According to the Weather Channel on my computer, it looks like today may not be as hot as yesterday, with temperatures only expected to go into the low 90's. That's not exactly a cool front, but it is an improvement, and we've got a chance of rain to go along with it, so things are looking up today. I went out to water my tomato plants yesterday evening, and as I walked up, it looked like a swarm of grasshoppers flew off of them. Of course the stink bugs stick around until I knock them off. I'm not using any pesticides on my plants, but I think I'm going to have to investigate some other options to help control all these hungry bugs! They've definitely got me and my tomatoes outnumbered! It's Day 2 of Mildred's vacation and so far so good. She hasn't called us about anything, (if you don't count the message she left on my phone last Friday), and we haven't had to call her for anything. (I'm hoping she caves first, because I do have some questions I need to ask her, but absolutely HATE to have to bother her when she's finally getting away from this place for a while.) Our menu for today includes: Spaghetti and meat sauce Baked potato bar Green peas Corn on the cob Fried squash Hot rolls And for dessert, choose your favorite flavor from among our Assorted Pies. June 29 Message-ID: <4E0B32D6.6040908@eosc.edu> Hi folks, We got a couple of light showers on campus yesterday, my daughter says it POURED at McDonald's where she was working, and we got not a stinking drop at my house where I was really hoping it would rain to help revive my poor drooping plants and refill my water barrel. Lately the drip from our air conditioner has been supplying more water for watering my plants than my water barrel. I've kind of been conserving the water in my barrel, not knowing when we'd get more rain to refill it, and the air conditioner drips constantly when it's running, so I keep a 5 gallon bucket under it to make use of the water rather than let it run all over where it's of no use and evaporate. Yesterday evening was wonderful though. It was at least 20 degrees cooler than it had been for weeks before, and it really felt good to sit outside and enjoy it without sweating to death! I could go for some more of that! And please remember in this extreme heat, to leave plenty of fresh water out for any pets or other animals that may have to stay outside. With temperatures like we've been having, a source of drinking water is a MUST, especially if you have to be out in it for any length of time. Happy Birthday wishes go out today to Mr. Roland Newby, evening librarian and receptionist at Eastern's McAlester campus, (as well as being a published author). Cafeteria worker, Sandra Kuykendall, is also celebrating her birthday today, and she probably really is celebrating, as she's off on vacation this week! Our menu for today includes: Pork loin Pork gravy Red potatoes Broccoli and rice casserole Corn Black eyed peas Hot rolls And for dessert, have a piece of delicious Cheesecake. If you can adopt or foster one or more of these animals, please go to the City Pound, off Hwy. 2 South next to Daisy's Paradise Mobile Home Park, immediately and do so. Dozens of lives are at stake. June 30 Message-ID: <4E0C8E03.8000506@eosc.edu> Hi folks, Well, we've almost made it to the long, HOT 4th of July weekend! Personally I think we need to schedule more holidays in the Spring and Fall. It seems like all the good ones fall in times of either extreme heat or extreme cold. Not that I'm complaining about having a holiday now, mind you. I just wish we'd get a cool front or some more rain. Our local PAWS group will have our regular monthly meeting this evening at the Latimer County Public Library. This meeting will be moved up to 6:00 due to a scheduling conflict. We encourage anyone who loves dogs, and is concerned about the welfare of area homeless pets to attend this meeting. We are always in need of monetary donations to help get us through the summer months when we can't have adoption days due to the extreme heat, donations of dog food, people to foster dogs until they can be relocated to a permanent home, volunteers to help at our pens, and various other things if anyone is interested in helping us in our mission to care for and find homes for the homeless dogs in our area. Our campus Chief of Police, Mike Nowlin, is sure to have a BIG celebration this weekend as he celebrates his birthday on July 3. He's finally catching up to me. Our Grants Manager, Debbie McIntyre, will have the whole country celebrating with her as she celebrates her birthday along with America on Mon. July 4th! Don't forget to attend the great fireworks display on Monday evening, July 4th, at Robber's Cave State Park. Our local fire department always puts on a great show to celebrate Independence Day, and there'll be lots of people from all around out there enjoyiing the spectacle in the beautiful setting of our state park. Our menu for today includes: Ribs Steamed cabbage Navy beans Macaroni and cheese Hot rolls And for dessert have a piece of Fresh Apple Cake with Cream Cheese Frosting. Have a great 4th of July weekend and be safe, Rhoda 8-) -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
