March 1 Message-ID: <4D6D0836.9080407@eosc.edu> Hi folks, Well, it appears that March is coming in like a lamb instead of a lion, which may not bode well for the end of the month, if the old saying holds true. I don't care, I'm just going to enjoy as much of this good weather as I can while we've got it. And since we've got a baseball double header here at noon, you might want to get out and enjoy it yourself if you can get away for a while. Good luck, guys! All you Biggest Loser contestants, don't forget today is weigh-in day! I hope you've been sticking to your diets, exercise programs, or whatever strategy you've come up with to shed those pounds, get healthier and win this thing! This great weather should give you added incentive to get out and exercise by having some fun in the sun. In recognition of National Nutrition Month, Dr. Julie (Davis) Collins has arranged for Mr. Brian Musgrove, a registered dietician from McAlester Hospital, to speak on the topic of eating disorders by ITV from the McAlester campus to the Wilburton and Idabel campuses today at 1:10. This presentation will be broadcast in Baker 115 here at the Wilburton campus, and Room 310 at Idabel. Anyone who would like to learn more on the subject of eating disorders should plan to attend this informative lecture and the discussion that will follow. Thank you, Dr. Collins, for your efforts to educate us and improve our health. Our menu for today includes: Baked chicken breast or Chicken fried steak Mashed potatoes and gravy Brussels sprouts California blend vegetables Corn on the cob Zucchini and tomatoes And for dessert, have a helping of delicious Apricot Cobbler. March 3 Message-ID: <4D6FAD80.6090909@eosc.edu> Hi folks, Looks like another wonderful day in store for us, with temperatures predicted to be around 75 for a high. Get out and enjoy it! Happy Birthday wishes go out today to Diamond Mills, Administrative Assistant in Mitchell Hall, and right hand to quite a number of faculty members. Hope she has a super day! There will be an EOSC Staff Council meeting this afternoon at 2:00 in the Library Conference Room and anyone interested may attend. We'll be discussing a couple of upcoming events, as well as how the Biggest Loser contest is going, among other things. PAWS of Wilburton will be having an adoption day in Roy's parking lot today, so if you know someone who would like a new furry best friend, send them on down. There are way too many dogs (and cats) out there who need good homes and someone to love. Don't forget, starting Saturday, to make a phone call, you'll have to dial the prefix as well as the seven digit number to get through. That's the price of progress, I guess. There are more and more, longer and longer numbers to remember, and our brains seem to be getting smaller and smaller, (at least mine does). Wouldn't you know? All those beautiful days hit in the middle of the work week, and the cold comes back on the weekend. But it won't be long til Spring Break and I'm hoping we'll have some beautiful days to be outside then. I noticed yesterday that the Bradford pears are about to bloom. I hope the chilly weekend nights we're about to have don't nip them and ruin their beautiful display. Please note, for those of you who use the Cafeteria on the weekend, we will be closing the North doors, the ones facing the Library building, after 2:00 today and having them closed through Saturday, in order to do floor maintenance. Please be patient and remember to go around and use the front doors on the South side of the building by the Bookstore during this time frame. (I heard Jared Bills and Holt Rushing broadcasting from the Wilburton High School baseball game yesterday and they were freezing out there! It wasn't exactly what you think of as baseball weather.) I looked at the little creek down the hill from my house on the way to work this morning and I'd say we could really use some rain. I know our pond is down, as are all the local ponds and lakes. Don't forget to get over to the gym today between 11:00 and 12:30 and weigh in with Loma if you're in the Biggest Loser competition. You're required to weigh in periodically in order to remain in the contest. We'll have some good weather coming up so people will be able to start getting out and getting some fresh air and exercise soon, and that will give your weight loss program and your spirits a big boost! EOSC students should have a blast at the Mardi Gras dance this evening from 10:00 to midnight. Let the good times roll! We do have a few of our EOSC family who will be celebrating their birthdays over Spring Break. Animal Science instructor, Todd Blocker, will celebrate his big day on Tues. March 15; Peery Lee of Gear Up, and husband of Melissa Lee, will celebrate his on St. Paddy's day; and Kathy Howe, with Student Support Services, will celebrate hers on Sunday March 20. Don't forget the Cafeteria will close after lunch today and remain closed until breakfast on March 21. Our menu for today includes: Beans Cornbread Shrimp Fish Scalloped potatoes Fried squash Corn And for dessert, have a piece of Chocolate Cake. Have a great Spring Break, but be safe! The Business Office knows how much our students depend on their financial aid to attend school. Prior to to break, the federal web site was down for the whole week. This prevented us for drawing down the funds to process financial aid, which was largely student loans for this semester. But due to the determination and hard work of two of our employees, Mrs. Gail Wilson and Ms. Trisha White, financial aid was processed even during the break. I really appreciated their effort and willingness to go the extra mile to accommodate our students. If you appreciate their effort, please let them know. Got some projects done that were too complicated or time consuming to tackle during a regular work week. It's really nice to have a whole week off with decent weather and without a major holiday to have to plan for stuck in the middle of it. I love Spring Break! I hear that the Mountaineer Baseball games went really well, that we now have more games in the win column on the charts. Way to go, guys! Here's hoping today's game will put another mark in the win column! I wondered over the break if anyone had heard anything from any of our former students from Japan. I had my daughter trying to contact Yuichi and Asumi on Facebook, but had no luck. We can only pray that they and their loved ones are safe, as well as our other friends and former students. Very Happy Birthday wishes go out today to longtime Eastern educator, Dr. Billye Kay Givens. I hope she has a wonderful day and enjoys every minute of it! Eastern is privileged to host a reception for Sen. Dan Boren this afternoon at 1:00 in our North Ballroom. Please help us make him welcome. The way the wind has been blowing, it looks like it might be a great day to fly a kite. Everything is really greening up and budding out with all this nice weather we've been having. I've been enjoying my red bud trees and forsythia bush blooming at my house, along with the smell of the wild plum trees wafting in from the nearby woods. Our beautiful trees are starting to bloom all over campus, too. It's really starting to look and feel like spring. Don't forget the Biggest Loser weigh-in today! After being off last week for Spring Break, our competitors need to go see if they derailed or stayed on track in their weight loss efforts. There are seven weeks left in the contest, and lots of nice weather coming to get out and exercise in, so even if your results haven't been so great so far, you've still got time to really make a difference in your chances of winning and the state of your health. Loma Messex reports that the Biggest Loser contest still had several "losers" doing well over Spring Break. One participant lost 5 pounds, and several more lost 2 or so, so evidently some of you did resist the temptation to pig out during the break. Maybe there was some exercising going on. That's a great way to shed pounds. (Plus it usually keeps you too busy to eat while you're doing it.) Just in the interest of healthier snacking when I get the urge to munch on something, I've started keeping bags of baby carrots. I like the taste, and they're satisfying crunchy, and not dry so you don't really need to drink anything to wash them down. Be sure and tune into Mountaineer Radio on your computer at www.radio.eosc.edu to hear Dougo's morning show, with great music, news, sports, great giveaways and more... Of course the fact that it's Friday just multiplies that, especially for Dr. Karen Harrison, I'm sure, since this is her birthday! Have a great one! You can even extend your celebration to cover the whole weekend. Baseball coach Aric Thomas will join the celebrating tomorrow when he celebrates his birthday with a baseball game against Redlands which will be broadcast at 1:00 on Mountaineer Radio (www.radio.eosc.edu). I'm sure he wants a WIN for his present and I hope he gets his wish! This will be followed by a game against Carl Albert on Sunday at 2:00, also on Mountaineer Radio. Two wins would be twice as good, right coach? Basketball coach Scott Edgar will host two sessions of basketball training for local students this Saturday in our gym. Maybe we'll get some future Mountaineers started right this weekend. For those of you who remember him from just a few years ago, I had word from Yuichi Sato today that he is doing fine. He is in Tokyo, and while he says there have been problems such as radioactive materials in the air, and aftershocks, he says tell everyone "I'm fine". I was very thankful to hear from him and know he's okay. He was a very nice young man, and worked for us in the Cafeteria for a while, so we got to know him as a friend, and had been worried about him and his family, as well as the rest of our former students. As far as I know, there still has been no word from Asumi Saijo, who lived in the town where the nuclear reactors are located. Keep her and all the others in your prayers. March 28 Message-ID: <4D909725.7090703@eosc.edu> Hi folks, Well, this weekend turned out much cooler than I wished for, and the week ahead is looking pretty chilly, also. I don't think temperatures are supposed to get in the warm range until about Friday, (another great reason to look forward to Friday). My daughter and I were all ready to get out and play in the dirt, planting flowers, etc. but it didn't take much time outside to decide that it was just a little chilly for that sort of thing Saturday. Evidently the chilly weather didn't affect our baseball team yesterday, as I heard Doug report on Mountaineer Radio (www.radio.eosc.edu) that they defeated Carl Albert 10-8. Be sure and tune in to hear the WHS softball team take on Pittsburg today at 4:00. I've always heard that everything has a purpose, and I was beginning to think that the only purpose our mean gander would ever serve is to keep us on our toes every time we left the house, keeping an eye on him to keep him from sneaking in a nip when we weren't looking. We finally found a really useful purpose for the ornery old bird though, when my brother-in-law and two nephews came by and said they wanted to take it to their house to guard their chickens. Some dogs have been bothering his flock of chickens and that ornery bird is certainly not afraid to chase off a dog, so he may have found his purpose in life. I was afraid the peacock would leave if the gander wasn't there any more, but it still seems to be interested in sticking around, especially when I go out and feed it. And it hangs out with the little tail featherless rooster we took in recently from one of my PAWS buddies who had had it dropped in with her chickens. (Her rooster had a problem with having another rooster in his henhouse, so she needed to find this pitiful little fellow another place to call home.) We have an unusual menagerie of birds, I admit, all of which seem to be male and can't lay us any eggs. Since I'm going to be off tomorrow, I want to remind everyone involved in the Biggest Loser contest to go weigh in tomorrow between 11:00 and 12:30. I hope you're all sticking to your plan of getting healthy and losing weight to improve your quality of life. Our menu for today includes: Hamburger steak Mashed potatoes and gravy Green beans Carrots Stewed tomatoes Wild rice Hot rolls And for dessert, have a piece of luscious Lemon Cake. Have a great day at Eastern, Rhoda :-) -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Kelbie is coordinating the effort at OU and in the city of Norman. She has asked us to become involved and Honors students voted unanimously to do that on Wednesday. Brenda Kennedy will lead PTK students in the effort, too, and we want all the clubs on campus to be involved. Already the Latimer County Arts Council and some Lions Club members have signed on. Our deadline is May 7. We will need to fold cranes (at least 300) and find donors to match each crane for $5, minimum. We can do this! I have a little family of folded paper cranes that Asumi made for me before she left, so they are my model when I start to fold. I hope to send at least one of them home to her, but I'm not sure I can part with the whole family.Anyway, Honors/PTK students will explain the project to your club members if you will send us the date of your next meeting. When the invoice comes in, I can send the specific one with the video to you and indicate that Honors ordered it. At least, this is what I do with others that order books under our account (as there is only one like this, I guess). I am sure that this will work, but if you are not comfortable with this method, I will do whatever is needed! Then, Diamond just needs to enter a requisition (today, if possible) for $95.95. I am not sure how the Honors account is set-up, but ours is called library materials. Yours might be something closer to what you referenced. Let me know if you'd like me to help in any other way! March 30 Message-ID: <4D933A04.1060900@eosc.edu> Hi folks, Well, we've made it to mid-week, one day closer to the good weather coming our way this Friday and on the weekend. It should be a great day for the much anticipated Sapphire Ball this Saturday. Happy Birthday wishes go out to Linda Enis of our Business Office. If she can survive this afternoon when she comes and tries to teach Mildred and me how to do a P.O. for ourselves on computer, she might have a decent day after all. Better wish us all luck on that little project! And good luck to our Mountaineer Baseball team today, too, as they travel to take on Arkansas Baptist. Maybe the weather will be a little better there. Our menu for today includes: Spaghetti and meat sauce Baked potatoes Green peas Corn on the cob Fried squash And for dessert, have a scrumptious piece of Cheesecake! March 31 Cyber Cafe closed today Message-ID: <4D948D1E.4060005@eosc.edu> Hi folks, Man, I wasn't ready for frost this morning! And I suspect neither were my little plants I had already set outside. I didn't have time to look this morning before coming to work, but I hope they're not frost bitten. I didn't think it was supposed to get quite that cold last night. I'm definitely ready for spring full-time. I even started on giving one of our shaggy dogs her spring hair cut. She's not fond of the process, so I have to do it gradually. Right now she looks almost bald on her back, while the rest of her is shaggy. (It might be a good thing she's blind and can't see herself!) I put the discarded fur to good use though. I have a suet feeder for the birds in the front yard that I don't use that much, so I took the fur from her clipping and stuffed it into the little baskets for the birds to use making nests. I've seen a couple over there pulling out bits to make soft linings for their future families. I had to go to the Maintenance Building the other day to pick up a box that had been delivered for the Cafeteria and noticed all the beautiful tulips blooming alongside Baker Hall. They really add a splash of color and cheer to the area and our campus. In order to allow our staff plenty of preparation time for upcoming events, we will not be opening the Cyber Cafe today. Sorry for any inconvenience this may cause. There will be a PAWS meeting this evening at 7:00 at the Public Library, as well as an adoption day at Atwood's in Poteau on Saturday. There will be a Recycling Day held this Saturday from 8:00 to 2:00 in the parking lot of the OSU Extension Center, just south of the railroad tracks on Hwy. 2 South. Items they will be accepting during this event include: paper, magazines, cardboard, plastic bottles/containers with #1, #2 or #5 designations, aluminum cans, household batteries, automobile batteries, "clean" steel cans and ink cartridges. This will be the first of a series of three of these events throughout the year, so after Saturday keep saving these items for the next Recycling Day in a few months. Look for the Big Belly Recycling containers that are permanently placed in various spots in town, too, as Wilburton gets on the recycling bandwagon. Our menu for today includes: Smoked sausage and roasted vegetables or Corn dogs Batter bites (potatoes) Cabbage Navy beans Macaroni and cheese And for dessert, have a piece of Fresh Apple Cake.
