May 2 Message-ID: <4DBEBA8A.4020006@eosc.edu> Hi folks, It seems our April showers, having gotten a late start, aren't finished yet, and are lingering on into May. Phooey! I'm cold and wet and ready for Spring! At least it's supposed to be nicer by EOSC graduation on Friday. My daughter's senior class at Wilburton High School had their Baccalaureate service yesterday and it was cold, wet and miserable. I wouldn't have left the house yesterday if it hadn't been for having to go to that. That puts several kids one step closer to switching from being Diggers to being Mountaineers though. We thought that would be the big memorable event for the day, but yesterday evening we heard on the news of the death of Osama Bin Laden. You might as well memorize that date now, kids. It will be on a future history test. I'd like to send out a GREAT BIG WELCOME BACK to Sheryl Marmon who has been gone for quite some time taking care of her ailing mother. I hope her situation has greatly improved. I'm sure Sheryl is extremely grateful to Rudy, Donnie and others who have been taking up the slack so she could take this much needed time off. Our menu for today includes: Lasagna Steamed red potatoes Corn Carrots Broccoli Hot rolls And for dessert, have a piece of Cheesecake. Have a great day at Eastern, Rhoda :-) -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Message-ID: <4DC40548.9070503@eosc.edu> Hi folks, It's good to be back after being out of commission for a few days. I was scheduled to be off only on Tuesday, but Wednesday and Thursday found me with a bad cold or something and there was no way I could've made it through a day of work, and the way I was coughing and carrying on, no one would've wanted me here anyway. At least I was able to make it back before graduation tonight! Hard to believe it's that time again already! We're about to send off another batch of kids we've come to know and gotten attached to. My own daughter will be going to her Senior Prom tomorrow night at Wilburton High School and that's hard to believe also! Then next week she'll be graduating too! I hope Anne Hester Brooks, the acting director of the McAlester campus had a great birthday yesterday on Cinco de Mayo. And Christy Stanfield of our Nursing Department and also at the McAlester campus will celebrate hers today. I hope it's very enjoyable also. Our menu for today includes: Taco salad or Grilled chicken on a bun French fries or Baked potato Corn Cole slaw Pinto beans And for dessert, have a Brownie! Have a great weekend, Rhoda :-) P. S. Don't forget, it's Mother's Day on Sunday! Go see your Mom or call her and let her know you do love her even though you didn't always listen to what she told you. rw -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... A special thanks to Maria Martinez and Maria (Gabby) Arroyo in the Library for hosting the first crane folding demo and for Gabby's beautiful display/bulletin board highlighting the project. Our total donation is $2679.51 with OU raising $445 and EOSC raising $2234.51! We folded 611 cranes and Kelbie's efforts netted 500 cranes. We are proud of our combined efforts and grateful for the generous hearts in Wilburton, OK. Kasumi expressed her gratitude as we took her to the airport on Monday afternoon and she headed back to Tokyo. She said "These two years have been very precious." For those of you who know her, that is a very lo-o-o-ng sentence coming from Kasumi. I often wondered about these students (most of whom came from Japan) in the beginning, what will they think of America as they grow older when the majority of their experience in America was on the Wilburton campus of Eastern Oklahoma State College? Choi said it very well: "I learned so many things from you at Eastern like not only education but how to treat people kindly." Thank you all for your generosity and your prayers symbolized by the beautiful cranes which are symbols for Hope and Peace, world-wide. --rb -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... I'm sure there are plenty of instructors getting antsy to get this week over with and get grades turned in, so they can start their summer break, too. Here in the Cafeteria we'll have one slower week before Gear Up camp starts, followed by Upward Bound, so we'll still be keeping pretty busy in this part of the world. Next week our cafeteria schedule will be from 11:00 to 4:00, so we will be open for lunch and any afternoon cravings you may have. Ruth Steinberger with the Oklahoma Spay/Neuter program will be at the Wilburton City Council meeting this evening at 6:00 to present information on a spay and neuter program for pets belonging to people with low incomes, and what is needed to get this program to come to our city. Anyone who is upset by the needless killing of homeless pets needs to attend this meeting. Basically we are looking for a suitable building or large room to use for this program once a month or so to provide spay and neuter services to the many pets in this area whose owners are struggling financially and cannot afford the regular price to have their pets spayed or neutered to prevent more unwanted puppies and kittens from being born. This would be a tremendous help to the city of Wilburton and its citizens, both human and animal. Don't forget, the announcement of the winner of Eastern's Biggest Loser competition will be made tomorrow morning in the Student Center lobby. Be sure and be there to congratulate the winners. May 23 Cyber Cafe closed today Message-ID: <4DDA6FF3.2090509@eosc.edu> Hi folks, Well, I'm REALLY glad the world didn't end on Saturday as had been predicted by some, and last night's bad storms didn't go through our area. I'm sure people in Joplin, MO where the tornadoes wreaked havoc last night felt like the world was ending. Makes me really glad there are plans in the works for several local storms shelters to be built in the near future. I was trying to listen to some news of last night's storms this morning on the way to work, flipping around through radio channels and I noticed that when I flipped to B98 out of Ft. Smith, there was only dead silence. I wondered if they or their tower may have had some damage. Happy Birthday wishes go out today to Alan Moss of our Physical Plant. If he doesn't watch it, he's going to catch up to me! Today is my daughter's last actual day of high school. They have a Powder Puff Football game this evening at 7:00, and their Senior Trip tomorrow, Senior checkout on Thursday and that's it for high school for her! Next stop...Eastern in August! Another fun filled and educational Gear Up Camp will start on our campus tomorrow, as the Gear Up kids continue to prepare for college and their future. Linda, Helen and their staff will be super busy and super tired by the time it's over with, but it's a wonderful program and many area children will reap long term benefits from it. Way to go Gear Up Staff! Our menu for today includes: Dorito bake Mexican rice Pinto beans Baked potato bar Fried squash Corn Cornbread And for dessert, have some Bread Pudding. Have a great day at Eastern, Rhoda :-) -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... May 24 No Cyber Cafe today Message-ID: <4DDBBA5C.8000202@eosc.edu> Hi folks, Gear Up camp begins on campus today! That ought to liven things up quite a bit! It's been pretty slow around here with so many of the students graduated or gone home for the summer, but that should change now that Gear Up is back in session this week and part of next week, and Upward Bound starting next week, too. We'll have more kids to feed than we know what to do with! If you like to shake a leg, you might want to get out to the Veteran's Colony south of town this evening from 7:00 to 9:00 for "Dancing with the Vets", two hours of dancing (or learning to dance) to live music with Trapper on keyboard and guitar. Admission is free, but donations are much appreciated. Who needs "Dancing with the Stars" on TV when you can go out and do the real thing? Go out and support our vets. Our menu for today includes: Brisket Mashed potatoes and gravy Broccoli and rice casserole Baby carrots Corn on the cob Hot rolls or Hamburgers & Fries And for dessert, pick a piece of Chocolate or Cherry Cream Pie! Yum! Have a great day at Eastern, Rhoda :-) -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... May 25 No Cyber Today Message-ID: <4DDD0FF7.10607@eosc.edu> Hi folks, Our Gear Up group seems to have survived the stormy evening without any difficulty, and were in for breakfast in force this morning. Our schedule for this week is slightly different than normal. Breakfast is from 8:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m., Lunch is from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., and Dinner is from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Next week we'll have a whole swarm of Upward Bound kids on campus and it will have to be adjusted again to accommodate them. My gas gauge was getting quite low yesterday evening as I was about to go home, telling me I had around 14 or 15 miles before I'd be walking, so I stopped and put in $10 worth of gas to get me through till payday. Then as I left the pump, I noticed the gauge went down to 13, then 12 miles till "E". Talk about gas not going as far as it used to, (or our dollars either!) I'm wondering now if I paid to have gas sucked out of my tank! Happy Birthday wishes go out today to one of our kitchen staff, Christi Hall. Hope she has a great one, even if we do make her come to work! Our computers were off to a slow start this morning, as the storms last night had knocked them out of service temporarily, and I was worried that I wouldn't be able to get out our menu today and it's a GOOD one! Some of my favorite stuff! And here it is! Chicken parmesan (My favorite!) Green beans Fresh steamed squash Cauliflower and cheese sauce Garlic and cheese biscuits or Pizza And for dessert, have a piece of Marble Cake! Have a great day at Eastern! Rhoda :-) P. S. I still haven't been able to get the radio station to come in yet today, sorry Doug, I'm trying. rw -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Save some gas $ and get the books you need for your classes close to home! With summer hours having begun this week, and the Memorial Day holiday on Monday, most of us are looking forward to a long, (and I'm hoping storm-free) long weekend. Get out and enjoy yourself (safely) on your time off. To help out the city pound, PAWS has scheduled an adoption day in front of Roy's Grocery Store today. Go by there and see if you can't find a new BFFF (Best Furry Friend Forever) and save a life. You'll be glad you did! These wonderful dogs deserve a chance to live a life with a loving family and die of old age many happy years from now. Due to this adoption day, our regular monthly meeting which would've been scheduled for tonight, has been postponed until next Thursday at the Latimer County Public Library at 6:00 p.m. Our menu for today includes: Hamburger steak Scalloped potatoes Fresh spinach Black eyed peas Sauerkraut and little smokies Hot rolls or Hot ham and cheese with Tator Tots And for dessert, have a scrumptious piece of Strawberry Shortcake! Have a great day and a great Memorial Day weekend, Rhoda :-) -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... May 31 CYBER CAFE OPEN!!! Message-ID: <4DE4FA2A.4030004@eosc.edu> Hi folks, I hope you all had a wonderful, long Memorial Weekend. I enjoyed my time off. Did several outdoor things I'd been meaning to do, including planting some cantaloupe plants. We've been having some terrific cantaloupe on our salad bar lately here in the Cafeteria and it's given me a craving, so I decided to see if I could find some plants and grow my own. There just happened to be a few plants left at Roy's (along with some big, juicy cantaloupes to buy and eat while you're waiting on yours to grow). I bought a 4-pak and planted them, so we'll see what happens. (I've read this gardener's tip that you can suspend your growing cantaloupes in pantyhose to help support them and keep them off the dirt. When I was younger we actually had to wear the pantyhose!) My tomato plants are doing pretty well, and my husband's squash and cucumbers are beginning to take off also. We might make gardeners yet. If we're still feeling this good about it by the end of the gardening season, we may plant even more next year. We are just kind of dabbling in it this year, but with the price of groceries, gas, etc., it feels pretty good to be able to supply some of your own groceries. Very Happy Birthday wishes go out to Physical Education instructor Loma Messex, who celebrated her big day yesterday. I hope she had a great birthday and has a great summer, out picking blackberries and living the good life. Well, we survived the first wave of Gear Up camps this summer, and are now waiting on the arrival of our Upward Bound campers and the second Gear Up group. That's when it will really get busy around here! Mildred and Susie wanted me to let everyone know that we will be having breakfast items in the Cyber Cafe if you get hungry and miss the regular breakfast schedule. I believe today is the start of the Business Office and other offices in the Library Building moving to their temporary location in Choctaw Hall so that their old offices can be remodeled. This is going to be a confusing process. I'm such a creature of habit that I'm liable to be all the way over to the Library building before I realize they "don't live there anymore", at least for a few months. This is just one of the first steps in some wonderful renovations to take place on our campus in the near future, so please be patient with any inconvenience it causes. It will definitely be worth it in the long run! Our menu for today includes: Smoked sausage with roasted peppers, onions and potatoes Baked beans Macaroni and cheese Broccoli spears Corn Hot rolls And for dessert, have some luscious Peach Cobbler. Have a great day at Eastern, Rhoda :-) -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
