We have invited every veteran in the county and I think that it is very important that the students, staff, and faculty of the college show up to prove to them how much we do appreciate what they did and continue to do to preserve our freedoms. Please wear red, white, and blue (if you can) and bring a photo or memento of your favorite vet or soldier currently serving to place on the edge of the stage. The ladies of the American Legion Auxiliary Post 145 will have poppies available in the lobby both before and after the program. They are free, but they do accept donations to help with their on-going expenses of honoring those who have served our country in this way. The Honors Program is then hosting the veterans for lunch in the cafeteria after the program. I think it will be a lovely tribute, so, please, join us. --rb -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... As some of you know I have a son that has Epilepsy, so of course I have a personal interest in this information. As an employee of EOSC for 14 years I am aware of students on campus every semester that have a seizure disorder. I know that all of us need to be prepared to adequately assist anyone having a seizure. There are many myths and much wrong information in existence about how to assist someone when he/she is having a seizure. Seizures are scary to witness, but they don't have to be considered a medical emergency. (There are certainly times when a seizure is considered a medical emergency!) Just click on the attachment files for information that you may need someday. There are millions of people in our country alone that have some type of seizure disorder. When we are well informed and prepared, we can give the most appropriate assistance! Thank You, June Haynes -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... People who get under objects, like desks or cars, are crushed. 2) Cats, dogs and babies often naturally curl up in the fetal position. You should too in an earthquake. It is a natural safety/survival instinct. You can survive in a smaller void. Get next to an object, next to a sofa, next to a bed, next to a large bulky object that will compress slightly but leave a void next to it. 3) Wooden buildings are the safest type of construction to be in during an earthquake. Wood is flexible and moves with the force of the earthquake. If the wooden building does collapse, large survival voids are created. Also, the wooden building has less concentrated, crushing weight. Brick buildings will break into individual bricks. Bricks will cause many injuries but less squashed bodies than concrete slabs. 4) If you are in bed during the night and an earthquake occurs, simply roll off the bed. A safe void will exist around the bed. Hotels can achieve a much greater survival rate in earthquakes, simply by posting a sign on the back of the door of every room telling occupants to lie down on the floor, next to the bottom of the bed during an earthquake. 5) If an earthquake happens and you cannot easily escape by getting out the door or window, then lie down and curl up in the fetal position next to a sofa, or large chair. 6) Most everyone who gets under a doorway when buildings collapse is killed. How? If you stand under a doorway and the doorjamb falls forward or backward you will be crushed by the ceiling above. If the door jam ! falls sideways you will be cut in half by the doorway. In either case, you will be killed! 7) Never go to the stairs. The stairs have a different 'moment of frequency' (they swing separately from the main part of the building). The stairs and remainder of the building continuously bump into each other until structural failure of the stairs takes place. The people who get on stairs before they fail are chopped up by the stair treads - horribly mutilated. Even if the building doesn't collapse, stay away from the stairs. The stairs are a likely part of the building to be damaged. Even if the stairs are not collapsed by the earthquake, they may collapse later when overloaded by fleeing people. They should always be checked for safety, even when the rest of the building is not damaged. 8) Get near the outer walls of buildings or outside of them if possible - It is much better to be near the outside of the building rather than the interior. The farther inside you are from the outside perimeter of the building the greater the probability that your escape route will be blocked. 9) People inside of their vehicles are crushed when the road above falls in an earthquake and crushes their vehicles; which is exactly what happened with the slabs between the decks of the Nimitz Freeway. The victims of the San Francisco earthquake all stayed inside of their vehicles. They were all killed. They could have easily survived by getting out and sitting or lying next to their vehicles. Everyone killed would have survived if they had been able to get out of their cars and sit or lie next to them. All the crushed cars had voids 3 feet high next to them, except for the cars that had columns fall directly across them. 10) I discovered, while crawling inside of collapsed newspaper offices and other offices with a lot of paper, that paper does not compact. Large voids are found surrounding stacks of paper. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... The Latimer County Arts Council is starting up our annual Concert Series with Michael Ginsburg on Saturday at 7pm. Many of you know Michael and have heard him play. If you aren't familiar with him, he is a classically trained violinist who plays a wide range of music, including what many of us would consider "fiddle" music - so he has something for everyone. He and an accompanist will be playing a concert this Saturday at 7pm at the Wilburton First Presbyterian Church, 108 East Blair, which is 2 blocks up from the Post Office. The concert is free, but we gladly accept all donations at the door, and punch and cookies will be provided after the concert. There's no need to get dressed up. Just come on out for a great evening of music and fun. You'll be glad you did. If you're not familiar with the Latimer County Arts Council, we are a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting the Arts in Latimer County, and the majority of our projects revolve around bringing in arts programming to the public schools in our county at no cost to the schools themselves. So, it's a great cause - and there will be some great music. I hope to see you there. (And of course, a reminder to My students that extra credit is available for attendance.) Thanks! Fact---Epilepsy is a physical disorder that has nothing to do with mental health or intelligence. Myth---Epilepsy is contagious. Fact---It is impossible to "catch" epilepsy from someone who is having a seizure. Myth---A person who has a seizure can swallow his or her tongue. Fact---Someone having a seizure is not at risk of swallowing his or her tongue. Never place an object such as a spoon in the person's mouth, as it could break a tooth or injure the gums, and block the airway. Myth---People with epilepsy look different. Fact---People with epilepsy look the same as everyone else. In fact, they lead normal lives and can achieve the goals as the rest of us. Myth---A seizure can be stopped by restraining the person. Fact---Never restrain anyone during a seizure---you could injure him or her. Move the person away from any sharp objects or hard surfaces. WHAT IS EPILEPSY? Epilepsy is a neurological condition caused by sudden brief changes in the brain's electrical balance, causing seizures. Seizures can alter awareness, physical movements, consciousness or actions. Seizures generally last from a few seconds to a few minutes. Epilepsy is often called a "seizure disorder." Both terms are used to describe recurring seizures. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... I really enjoyed the break from the alarm clock and the time clock! It's hard to believe this is the last week of classes before Finals Week! I had to call Dana to make sure. I know there will be LOT of events going on on campus in the next couple of weeks as everyone tries to squeeze everything in before the end of classes and Christmas break. I hope everyone wishes our new Housing Director, Lauren Polk, a very Happy Birthday today! She's really sweet and we want to make her welcome at Eastern. If you haven't met her yet, you should make a point to stop by and get acquainted, although you may be confused, as she looks like she should be a student. And Tuesday, Nov. 29, our Administrative Assistant in the Athletic Department, Lindy Morgan, (daughter of Gear Up's Linda Morgan) will be celebrating her birthday, so be sure and wish her a great day! This Sunday, Dec. 4th will bring another Eastern tradition, our Candlelighting program. This will be the first time to have it directed by proud new dad, Patrick Moore, so be sure and come enjoy this wonderful concert. (I'm hoping we'll get to see Letoria and Gavin, the new little addition to the Moore family as well.) If you signed up and have not completed your workshops, you will not receive the grant. You have until Friday to complete those! Contact me or June Haynes to complete them. Ms. Howe is out of the office this week. My contact information is: Sue Lovett, 918-465-1823 or slovett at eosc.edu Mrs. Haynes' information is: June Haynes, 918-465-1822 or jhaynes at eosc.edu The competition for the grant this semester is very great, so all things will be considered. 1. Receiving Pell 2. Have an unmet need of $555 3. Completed 5 workshops and other contacts 4. Above 2.0 GPA 5. Credit hours The first two are requirements of the Dept. of Education. The 3rd one is an SSS requirement, and the last two are flexible under the right conditions. Credit hours will be looked at, and students who have an excess of hours needed to graduate, and/or low GPA will be eliminated unless there is money enough for them. We have a lump sum that we will distribute, and we want to make it go as far as it can. Message-ID: Hello Everyone, I would like to invite everyone to be a part of the upcoming Latimer County Arts Council Arts and Crafts Half and Half Sale and Lunch on Sunday, December 11th. Each year the Red Oak Masons graciously do a fundraiser for us to raise money for our programs. What are our programs? Well, we are a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting the arts in Latimer County and southeastern Oklahoma. Our biggest focus is on the school systems in this county (Wilburton, Red Oak, Panola and Buffalo Valley). We raise money to bring arts programming into these schools at NO cost to the school systems. For several years we've brought in performances by the Tulsa Opera, which we'll be doing again in January. We've brought in musicians, puppeteers, and all sorts of other programs that most of our school systems do not offer and/or cannot afford. Studies have shown time and again that students exposed to Arts programming do better on standardized testing - and since those tests seem to determine everything else in public schools today - we want to give our kids whatever advantages we can. This year we will be offering short residencies, where an artist goes into individual classrooms to work on skills with children for several weeks. For instance our own English and Creative Writing teacher, Ande Davis will be doing a residency with 5th grade students next semester - using creative writing to help prepare them for their writing tests. Our Musical Director, Patrick Moore will be bringing a Music residency later in the year. Honors program Director, Ruth Brelsford has been doing Storytelling with elementary students for the last few years. We are also currently working on a Dance residency. And again - all of this happens with no expense to the schools. So, of course, we need to raise funds to make all this keep happening. The Red Oak Masons have been very generous, and we hope you will be, too. So, we are having an after-lunch type potluck lunch at the Red Oak school cafeteria on Sunday, December 11th, starting at 11:30am. During this time we will also have a Silent Auction set up with our Arts and Crafts Half and Half Sale. This sale will feature art and crafts of all sorts submitted by local artists and crafters. You'll be able to pick up some great Christmas gifts!! All of the lunch money and half of the auction money will go directly to the Arts Council fund. And the Red Oak Masons will match some of that money raised! And in support of local artists, the other Half of the auction money will go directly back to the Artists! So, if you make quilts or decorate cakes or paint or sculpt or write books or make jewelry or carve wood, etc. this is a chance for you to make some Christmas money for yourself - and donate to the arts in Latimer County. And if you're worried that your masterpiece may go for less than you'd like, don't worry - you can set a minimum sale price, and if that isn't offered, we'll return your items to you. So, contact me if you want to enter something into the Auction. Please pass the word to anyone you know. And please, please consider being present for our event on December 11th. Thank you so much, Melissa Lee Latimer County Arts Council President Melissa Heath-Lee Theatre Eastern Eastern Oklahoma State College 1301 West Main Street Wilburton, Oklahoma 74578 918-465-1758 mlee at eosc.edu www.eosc.edu/academic/drama/drama_dept.html -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
