Be sure and keep your outdoor plants watered well, along with any pets that might have to stay outdoors. It's also a good idea to check on the welfare of any elderly neighbors, or anyone you know doesn't have air conditioning. I want to extend my thanks to Alana Bray from the Business Office and Tina Ray from the Counseling/Admissions Office. They delivered workshops for us. Also, a special thanks to June Haynes who came in and worked for the workshops as well. I also need to announce that for the full week next week, all SSS Participants can, and should, come in and do their mandatory workshops on CD. Just come in and see Kathy Howe to do those. If you attend school in Idabel or McAlester, you can call Kathy at 918-465-1860 to make arrangements to do those workshops. Remember, they are mandatory! This semester, Kathy will be going to the McAlester Campus on Mondays to meet with SSS participants in order to give those students a chance to make contact so they can maintain their "active" status in the program. Active students have an opportunity to apply for a scholarship through SSS. You may call Ms. Howe at 918-465-1860 to make arrangements for the CD workshops. Hope you have a great semester! I just wanted to send out an email that would give you some basic information on the courses and extracurriculars that are offered within the Department of Mass Communication. First, if you have any interest in photography, video production, radio/television broadcasting, writing, graphic design, advertising or public relations you may want to think about majoring in Mass Communication. The degree is one of the most diverse plans you will find on campus and around the state. Second, if you don't want to major in Mass Comm, but have an interest in some of the above activities, we have several extra-curriculars available to you. Beginning at the end of August, we will publish our student-produced newspaper twice a month. We are always in the hunt for photographers, writers, editors and we are also in need of a new web editor. Did you work on a yearbook staff in high school? Eastern also produces a yearbook annually and we are in need of solid, self-motivated staff members. Are you interested in sports play-by-play or being a part of radio? We also have our very own radio station on the Wilburton campus. Each year we have student-broadcasters who call games and who have even hosted their own weekly radio shows. And finally, we have the Photo Club in the Mass Comm department. Last year's club was very active and we have our eyes set on travelling abroad in the year to come. If you are interested in any of the details above, please stop by my office (Baker 124), give me a call (918.465.1720) or hit reply on this email and ask some questions. I am always happy to hear from students. Keep in mind that I do have some scholarship and work opportunities available. Kristen Turner P.S. I know Friday night was really stormy here, with constant thunder and lightning for quite a while, and Saturday was rainy. I know we need the rain, but was kind of disappointed it had to happen on the day Bikes and Bluegrass was scheduled downtown. I saw in the advertising for this event that Eastern grad, Lance Griffith, from back in 1981 was scheduled to perform, too. I walked out past our pond Saturday during one of the lulls in the rain, and noticed a bare patch on a tall tree next to the path. Then I noticed strips of bark on the ground, and looking further up the trunk, I realized that the tree had been struck by lightning during the previous night's storm! I'm glad I was safe in the house when that happened! Don't forget Monday is the last day to add a class, and Friday will be the last day to drop one. Tuesday, there will be a Staff Council meeting at 2:00 in the Library Conference Room. Anyone who is interested may attend, and we appreciate constructive input and new ideas. We've needed it badly, and I'm tired of the burn ban. There will be a Building Monitors meeting Wednesday at 2:00 in the Ballroom, so all Building Monitors need to make plans to attend or send a representative in your place. Wednesday evening, there will be a 3 on 3 Basketball Tournament in the Fieldhouse, so go get in on the action or at least go cheer on your favorite team. This Thursday evening at 6:00 there will be a PAWS meeting in the Public Library. All people interested in helping dogs should attend. We are always happy to have new members, and can always use more help with adopting, fostering, and taking care of the dogs at our pens. Friday is College Colors Day, so wear your Blue and Gold proudly!
