Don't know how long it will stay, but after all the pretty warm weather, with the flowers budding and blooming out, and birds singing like it was spring, this cold spell was kind of a shock to my system. And the frost and fog this morning when I came outside to go to work didn't help. There will be a Staff Council meeting this Tuesday at 2:00 in the Library Conference Room for anyone interested in attending. Tim Tingle, well known Choctaw storyteller, will be in the Ballroom at 7:00 this Tuesday evening, to speak to entertain people with his wonderful stories. Wednesday evening, you'll want to grab your sweetheart and go to the Valentine's Dance in the Ballroom. It should be a great time! Thursday will be the second weigh-in for the Biggest Loser contest here at Eastern, from 10 - 12 in the Fieldhouse with Loma Messex, and Thursday evening, you'll want to come and hear Linda Morgan as she speaks to students in the latest in the "Leadership to Go" series. Saturday, the Math Counts kids will once again be on campus, and the Sweetheart Soiree will be held in the White House, hosted by the Latimer County Arts Council. Birthdays for this week include, Tia Kelley on Tuesday, Sandra Robertson on Thursday and Carter Mattson on Sunday. Our menus for this week include: Monday: Spaghetti and meat sauce, broccoli, corn, fried squash, garlic bread, baked potatoes, cheesecake. The story is based on the true tale of the Choctaws helping runaway slaves escape from the plantation on one side of the Bok Chita River to Choctaw land on the other side. Tonight's basketball games here on campus have been postponed till tomorrow night when the weather should prove more favorable. Some areas got more bad weather than we did, making traveling risky. Don't forget to do something special for your sweetheart tomorrow on Valentine's Day. And wish Chris Ames a Happy Birthday. Maybe that's why he's such a sweet guy, having a birthday on Valentine's Day. I hope everyone is planning on attending the Leadership to Go program this Thursday, as well as the Honor's Club program with Kirk Smalley, speaking on the topic of bullying in schools and society today. This program is designed to increase awareness and provide helpful information for parents, and students who will probably one day be parents. This Thursday and Friday, Eastern will once again host the annual Science Fair. This fair brings the best and the brightest minds from area high school science classes to Eastern to compete each year. If you get a chance to get up to the Ballroom and meet some of these kids and see some of their quite impressive exhibits, be sure and do so. It's quite interesting and well worth your time, and you just might learn something! Our menus for this week include: Monday: Lasagna, mashed potatoes and gravy, black-eyed peas, fried okra, spinach, macaroni and cheese, hot rolls, chocolate cake. Tuesday: Chicken alfredo, scalloped potatoes, green beans, corn on the cob, broccoli, hot rolls, assorted pies. Their organization is in need of two(2) college students, preferably with a Scouting background, who are interested in working on Wednesday evenings from 6:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. The college students chosen would be working with children who range in age from the first through the fifth grade helping them with crafts and activities. The pay is $10.00 per hour plus mileage. You would either be working at Jones Academy or at the American Legion building in Hartshorne, which is located on the east end of town. Jones Academy will require a background check as will the Boy Scouts but there is no charge for this check. This job is an ongoing opportunity and doesn't end when the semester is over but follows the Hartshorne Public School schedule. If you are interested, please call Mr. Dickson at 918.743.6125 or his cell at 915.490.7213. Thank you for reading this and responding. Most of us have witnessed bullying, some of us either have been bullied, or have bullied other people, even though we don't want to admit it. Many of us have children or grandchildren in public schools; the rest of us will in the next few years. Mr. Smalley will speak from his own personal tragedy about this issue and, hopefully, give all of us an increased sensitivity to the problem and some concrete ways to help our children, now and in the future. The event is, of course, free and open to all who are interested. If you have questions, contact Ruth Askew Brelsford at 918-465-1762 or rbrelsford at eosc.edu. All Oklahoma Colleges and Universities that have TRiO programs, such as: Talent Search, Upward Bound, Student Support Services, Veterans' Upward Bound, McNair, and Choctaw Upward may choose to bring students to this TRiO Day of recognition. There will be a lot of TRiO students roaming the hall of the the OK State Capitol. It is always more interesting to me, if we make it on time to sit in the House Chambers, but that is not always possible. Other seating is provided and we can view the program on big screen. The program start promptly at 10am.(Thus, why we leave at 6am) Sometimes we have traffic issues on I 40 that detain us. Don't be late. Our bus will leave campus at 6am sharp! Feb. 20 to Fri. Feb. 24 Message-ID: <4F4267D6.1030600@eosc.edu> Hi folks, It looks like another beautiful day and another great week coming up here at Eastern. Hard to believe February's winding down already, even though it does have an extra day this year, (Leap Year). Today the Red Cross will be holding a Blood Drive in the Student Center Ballroom, so be a hero and get up there and give life-saving blood for someone who needs it desperately. Don't forget to bring canned goods to donate to the Student Support Services Food Drive before Wednesday. A group of SSS participants will be heading to our state capitol in Oklahoma City for Trio Day, and will be delivering the canned goods for distribution to needy families all across our state. Also on Wednesday, we will have a tour group from Smithville High School, so be sure and make them welcome to Eastern's campus. We may be seeing several of them back again in the fall! And finally, also on Wednesday, Eastern will host special speaker, Dr. Donnie Nero, in honor of Black History Month. His topic will be "Walk a Mile In My Shoes", and will be presented in the Ballroom at 1:30. Dr. Nero is the retired president of Conners State College. On Thursday, be sure and listen to Freshman Dalton Shumate's (future famous radio personality from right here in Wilburton) new radio show from 11:00 a.m. to Noon, Dalton's Top 40 Mix. He's doing a great job! Tune in at www.radio.eosc.edu. Get in touch with Dana Lewis if you'd like to participate in the Lead to Read program where college students go to the local elementary school and read stories to eager young listeners. Their next trip will be this Friday afternoon, so hurry and get signed up! Birthdays for this week include: Monday, Meats Lab Manager and Instructor, Gaylon Brannon; Tues. our Assistant Director of Financial Aid, Patricia Rector; and Friday, our favorite Pastry Cook, Yolanda Del Rio. I hope they all have a great day on their special day! Menus for this week include: Monday: Chicken and dumplings, steamed red potatoes, baby carrots, English peas, fried squash, hot rolls, blackberry cobbler. Tuesday: Meatloaf, or chicken fried steak, mashed potatoes and gravy, blackeyed peas, brussels sprouts, mixed vegetable blend, hot rolls, fresh apple cake. Wednesday: Pork loin, mashed potatoes and gravy, corn, green beans, fried okra, hot rolls, peach cobbler. Thursday: Beef goulash, baked potatoes, corn on the cob, broccoli, Cape Cod blend veggies, bread sticks, cheesecake. Friday: Fish on a bun or hamburgers with fries, baked beans, coleslaw, vegetable soup and cornbread, cookies. Have a great week, and come eat with us. We appreciate your business! Message-ID: <4F440EA5.40800@eosc.edu> Grant Aid for this semester is in the works! I will have the sign-up sheet ready in the next day or two, and I will let you all know as soon as you can come by and apply for the scholarship. However, in compiling the list, I have found many students who have not used the services at all. This concerns me, because, unless you use the services, you are not eligible to apply! You all still have time to complete the required workshops and make some visits with the staff here in Johnston Hall, but you need to hurry! The deadline for signing up will be March 16! You must have completed the workshops and made some visits to Student Support Services in order to qualify for the grant by that day. The workshops can be done Monday through Friday from 8 am till 5 pm. Also, students who cannot come in to do them may contact June Haynes @ (918-465-1822), Kathy Howe @ 918-465-1860 or myself, Sue Lovett @918-4651823. Mrs. Haynes and Ms. Howe have the workshops and can send them to you via e-mail. Also, Tammy Crow has them on flash drive in Idabel. She will submit them for you. There are 5 required workshops and all five take only take 45 minutes to complete. To be eligible, you will need the following: 1. Be an active member of SSS and completed the workshops for Mrs. Haynes and Ms. Howe. 2. Have a GPA of 2.0 or greater. (Come see me if you are below 2.0) 3. Be receiving Pell Grant. 4. Have an unmet need of at least $555. 5. Have been in SSS for at least 2 semesters. (Counting this one.) If you joined this semester, you won't qualify until next fall. Do not worry too much about the unmet need. When you come in and sign-up, I will send your name to Financial Aid, and they will do the math to see if you have unmet need. Most students do, but there are a few who don't. This is one of the federal requirements, so it is a must. To: kdarby at eosc.edu Karen, I wanted to touch base with you about our March 5th event. I will be bringing 10 faculty and staff members with me to campus from 12:30-2:00 in the ballroom. We will have representatives from all four of our colleges and schools as well as Dr. Wansick and Angela Price from McAlester to meet with students one-on-one and I will be doing a presentation over the transfer process. If you know of any students that are interested in ECU or are curious to see what other universities have to offer, please let them know that they can come by.
