History was made last week, as our baseball team played their first night game thanks to the new lighting that's been installed around their playing field. This opens up a whole new time frame for baseball games, enabling the students to spend more of their class time in classes rather than having to miss important lecture time because of their playing schedule. Coach Craig Price and the team would love to have lots of fans in the stands to cheer them on at all their upcoming home games. The playing schedule is available on the Eastern website, so check it out and come watch a great ballgame! In light of some of the more spectacular events of recent months where a young woman was shot in the head for wanting to go to school in Pakistan and another young woman was pulled from a bus and violently raped and murdered in India, this is a timely event. We know that 1 in 3 women in our world will suffer violence in her lifetime. That means one billion women! We also know, if we pay attention to statistics, that women in Oklahoma are especially vulnerable to domestic abuse. Students in the Honors Program are sponsoring a short demonstration in the cafeteria during the noon hour on Thursday. We are asking those students, faculty, and staff who want to help focus attention on this devastating problem to wear red on Thursday and meet in the cafeteria about 12:15. We will watch the video One Billion Rising and stand in solidarity with women all over the world. This event will last only 10 minutes, but it is important. Faculty: please announce this effort to your classes tomorrow and Thursday morning. What better way to show our love for the women who are important in our lives than standing together in solidarity on Valentine's Day! If you have questions, get back to me at this address or at x 762. --Ruth Brelsford -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... We had a really good one, and had several students in attendance. The students got to make their own MG masks, hear some interesting facts about MG from the "Spirit of Mardi Gras", eat Kings Cake and listen to Zydeco music. Taylor Burch won the prize for finding the coin in her slice of King's Cake. She won a hat full of MG items and a $20.00 gift card. Sam Harden won the prize for the best mask, and Dustin Welch won the drawing for the Valentine Basket. All the students received beads, horns and masks. I hope that students will take advantage of the social, cultural, and educational events we offer at Student Support Services. We try to make them fun as well as educational. It helps the students, and it helps us to keep the program going. Don't forget, Wednesday, February 20th is National TRiO Day and we will be taking students to Oklahoma City to the Capitol to celebrate with the legislators and TRiO programs throughout Oklahoma. We would love to have as many students as can arrange to go with us as possible. We are also planning a trip to the Museum of Red River in Idabel on April 2. More information for this trip will be sent via e-mail at a later date. We are collecting items for the HUGS program for soldiers in the Middle East, so everyone bring what you can. We will box it up and take it with us on TRiO Day. Thank you to all who participated in the Mardi Gras event yesterday. The Internationally-themed Book Club will be titled Reading with an International Flavor. We will be reading books by authors from other countries and having an international fair for the EOSC community to taste food and learn about other cultures. For the International Fair Book Club, we are inviting anyone who is familiar with the food and culture of another country to participate by preparing a dish typical to the country you have chosen. In case you are wondering, Chips & Salsa don't count! International students, exchange students, those who have traveled to another country, and first or second generation Americans are strongly encouraged to participate. However, even if you just have experience and knowledge of another country, we would be delighted to have you. The goal of this book club meeting is to raise cultural awareness and share knowledge regarding other countries. So, if you believe you have something to contribute, your attendance is more than welcome. To confirm attendance or for more information, please contact Maria Arroyo at extension #871, email: marroyo at eosc.edu or Maria Martinez extension #711, email: mmartinez at eosc.edu. With all the cut-backs that are being done in the military budget, it is especially thoughtful to send donations to help the soldiers who are far away defending our country. They really appreciate these boxes of "goodies" we send. I speak from experience since my own husband did 3 tours of duty in Viet Nam, and I sent him "care packages" every month. He loved getting them. We will carry the boxes to the Capitol tomorrow to be added with the donations from other schools and then will be sent to the Middle East for our American Soldiers.
