The Cafeteria will be closed all day Saturday and Sunday morning to prepare for and clean up after this event. Students will receive vouchers to eat brunch and dinner at either Roy's Deli, the Choctaw Travel Plaza, or the Eaton Hole. Sunday, April 6, both Danita Oller of OMTI and Kim Pendergraft of our EOSC Library will celebrate their birthday. Please wish both of these wonderful ladies a great day. Lunch menus for the week include: Tuesday: Lasagna, BBQ sandwich with chips, baked beans, fried squash, baby carrots, garlic bread, brownies. An acronym is a word that is formed from the first letter of each fact to be remembered. It can be a real word or a nonsense word you are able to pronounce. Using Acronyms to Remember Information, Pen and Book Here is how to form an acronym. .Write the facts you need to remember. .Underline the first letter of each fact. If there is more than one word in a fact, underline the first letter of only the first word in the fact. .Arrange the underlined letters to form an acronym that is a real word or a nonsense word you can pronounce. Using Acronyms to Remember Information, House "HOMES" is an example of an acronym that is a real word you can use to remember the names of the five Great Lakes: Michigan, Erie, Superior, Ontario, Huron: In HOMES, H is the first letter of Huron and helps you remember that name; O is the first letter of Ontario, and so on. "Telk" is an acronym that can be used to remember the following animals: tiger, lion, elephant, kangaroo. "Telk" is not a real word, but you can easily pronounce it. You could also have used "kelt" as an acronym. Notice that in this example, you cannot form a real word using the first letter of each fact to be remembered. Sometimes two or more of the facts you must remember each begin with the same first letter. For example, the acronym "capp" can be used to remember the following fruits: pear, apple, peach, cherry. You can use the first letter "p" in the acronym to remember either "pear" or "peach" and the second letter "p" to remember the other. Use the acronym strategy as a way to remember information. Go to the lowest floor, small center room (like a bathroom or closet), under a stairwell, or in an interior hallway with no windows. Crouch as low as possible to the floor, facing down; and cover your head with your hands. A bath tub may offer a shell of partial protection. Even in an interior room, you should cover yourself with some sort of thick padding (mattress, blankets, etc.), to protect against falling debris in case the roof and ceiling fail. A helmet can offer some protection against head injury. In an office building, hospital, nursing home or skyscraper: Go directly to an enclosed, windowless area in the center of the building -- away from glass and on the lowest floor possible. Then, crouch down and cover your head. Interior stairwells are usually good places to take shelter, and if not crowded, allow you to get to a lower level quickly. Stay off the elevators; you could be trapped in them if the power is lost. At school: Follow the drill! Go to the interior hall or room in an orderly way as you are told. Crouch low, head down, and protect the back of your head with your arms. Stay away from windows and large open rooms like gyms and auditoriums. In the open outdoors: If possible, seek shelter in a sturdy building. If not, lie flat and face-down on low ground, protecting the back of your head with your arms. Get as far away from trees and cars as you can; they may be blown onto you in a tornado. In a shopping mall or large store: Do not panic. Watch for others. Move as quickly as possible to an interior bathroom, storage room or other small enclosed area, away from windows. In a church or theater: Do not panic. If possible, move quickly but orderly to an interior bathroom or hallway, away from windows. Crouch face-down and protect your head with your arms. If there is no time to do that, get under the seats or pews, protecting your head with your arms or hands. In a house with a basement: Avoid windows. Get in the basement and under some kind of sturdy protection (heavy table or work bench), or cover yourself with a mattress or sleeping bag. Know where very heavy objects rest on the floor above (pianos, refrigerators, waterbeds, etc.) and do not go under them. They may fall down through a weakened floor and crush you. Head protection, such as a helmet, can offer some protection also. In a house with no basement, a dorm, or an apartment: Avoid windows. In a mobile home: Get out! Even if your home is tied down, it is not as safe as an underground shelter or permanent, sturdy building. Go to one of those shelters, or to a nearby permanent structure, using your tornado evacuation plan. Most tornadoes can destroy even tied-down mobile homes; and it is best not to play the low odds that yours will make it. Thank you for your attention and stay safe! :) -- Bryan E. Denny M.S. May 2 In-Reply-To: References: Message-ID: Hi folks, I hope everyone made it through the wild weather yesterday all in one piece. I don't know what it did anywhere else, but we got some fair sized hail at my house two different times yesterday. (Right after I put out tomato plants the evening before.) I guess we got off light compared to some areas though. It's hard to believe that graduation is already less than two weeks away! Time flies, doesn't it? There will be a PASS Club meeting, (Psychology and Social Sciences), today from 11:30 to 1:00 in the President's Dining Room in the Student Center. All club members who don't have a class at that time are encouraged to attend. (Bring your own lunch.) The Athletic Banquet will be this evening at 6:00 in the Ballroom. This annual event celebrates all our student athletes and their achievements. Wednesday, there will be a Blood Drive in the north half of the Ballroom from 10:00 to 2:30. With tornado season upon us, a good supply of blood is vital to help meet any emergency situations that may arise. The Student Support Services Graduates luncheon will also be on Wednesday at 11:00 in the South half of the Ballroom. This is a wonderful program that provides invaluable assistance to students who may be having a challenging time achieving their goal of a college education. There will be a Building Monitor meeting Thursday at 11:00 in Mitchell 206. All building monitors or a representative are encouraged to attend. On Thursday evening, music director Brandon Hendrix and his wonderful performers will present the annual Spring Concert in the Johnnie Wray Theatre at 7:00. Many of us on campus were privileged to hear at least part of this group once or twice last week when they performed at the Administrative Professionals Luncheon and again at the Employee Recognition Reception. They did a wonderful job both times, and I'm sure they will again. Friday and Saturday at 7:00 p.m., EOSC's Theatre Department under the direction of Sarah Klocke and Marshall Carby will present Neil Simon's comedy, Rumors. A final performance will be Sunday at 2:00. "This is a fast-paced, high-energy comedy with lots of physical humor", says Carby. Admission is $5 for the public, and free to any EOSC student, staff or faculty. Belated birthday wishes go out to Kayla Satoris, Cheer Sponsor and Administrative Assistant to the Dean of Students, who celebrated her big day last Friday, (and possibly all weekend!) And I also want to wish a wonderful first birthday to Miss Amelia Anne Brooks, daughter of McAlester campus director, Anne Brooks and husband Daniel. Amelia will celebrate her big day on Thursday, May 1, and I bet it will be spectacular! Lunch menus for the week include; Monday: Hard or soft shell tacos with all the fixings, red beans, cornbread, cilantro lime rice, green chili cheesy corn, and cream cheese swirl brownies. Tuesday: Hamburger steaks with onions, peppers and brown gravy, dinner rolls, assorted vegetables, and fresh apple cake. Wednesday: Chicken Alfredo, assorted vegetables, and mint chocolate cake.
