Apr. 10 In-Reply-To: References: Message-ID: Hi folks, I hope everyone had a wonderful Easter weekend. The weather was bipolar once again, with cool temperatures and sunshine on Saturday, (enough sun so that I have a sunburned face and hands from our PAWS dog adoption event), and rain turning into just a cloudy, chilly day on Easter Sunday. I bet that cut a lot of Easter egg hunting short, or sent it indoors. Current student enrollment will begin tomorrow, so if you are a current Freshman, be sure and get in there and enroll so you can be sure and get in the classes that you need to finish your degree as soon as possible. Also tomorrow, Eastern will be hosting the Annual Scholastic Contest on our Wilburton campus, with students from dozens of area schools coming to compete in tests in various subjects. There will be no college day classes tomorrow, as many of the faculty and staff will be involved with this contest, and many classrooms will be in use for it as well. Tomorrow evening, there will be a special exhibition basketball game at 7:00 in our gym, pitting the Wilburton Outlaws against the Harlem Ambassadors. Advance ticket prices are $6 for students and senior citizens, and $9 for adults. Tickets at the door will be $8 for students and senior citizens, and $10 for adults. Tickets can be purchased at the Wilburton Chamber of Commerce Office. I have been to one of these games before and they are very entertaining, and a great way to spend an evening. For those of you who are local residents and registered voters, tomorrow is election day, so get out there and vote! And I believe that Friday, we will once again have a group of students from Denmark coming for a week long visit. This is a wonderful opportunity for both this group and our own students to learn about each others culture and to build friendship and goodwill between our two countries. EOSC birthdays for the week include: Monday, April 6, Library staffer, Kim Pendergraft, and the very recently retired OMTI Administrative Assistant, Danita Oller, Tues. Apr. 7, Administrative Assistant to the Registrar, Dana Lewis, Wed. Apr. 8, Financial Aid Administrative Assistant, Amanda White, and last but not least, Friday, April 10, Campus Police Officer Tim Talley, will all celebrate birthdays. I hope all these wonderful people have a great birthday week! Lunch menus for the week include: Monday: Lasagna with garlic bread, green beans, fried squash, steamed red potatoes, vegetable blend, and strawberry poke cake. Tuesday: BBQ beef sandwiches or chick ribs with BBQ baked beans, potato salad, macaroni and cheese, steamed broccoli, potato cubes, chocolate chip brownies. Wednesday: Meatloaf, mashed potatoes and gravy, corn, rice pilaf, hot rolls, steamed spinach, steamed carrots, cheesecake. Thursday: Street tacos (chicken, pork, beef) or loaded nachos, guacamole, Spanish rice, fiesta corn, red beans and cornbread, lime poke cake. Friday: Hot roast beef sandwich with au jus sauce, curly fries, buttered noodles, fried okra, steamed vegetable blend, ice cream with toppings. Dinner menus include: Monday: Baked chicken breast with mashed potatoes and gravy, black eye peas, steamed carrots, steamed spinach, hot rolls. Tuesday: Little Smokies, pork patties, or grilled chicken breast with BBQ sauce on the side, loaded baked potato salad, corn nuggets, green beans, steamed vegetable blend. Wednesday: Hot dogs, hot links or smoked sausage links, (your choice of two with toppings), potato wedges, steamed broccoli, pork and beans. Thursday: Spaghetti with meat sauce or red sauce, garlic bread, fried squash, steamed carrots, green beans. Friday: Chicken fried steak or chicken, macaroni and cheese, mashed potatoes and gravy, fried zucchini, corn on the cob. I understand there are concerns and questions about the reason for the delays and when you can expect your funds. I want to take this opportunity to improve communication regarding these issues. Last year, the U.S. Department of Education (DOE) conducted a program review of Eastern Oklahoma State College for the first time in 26 years. As a result of the review, Eastern?s federal financial aid has been restricted to a reimbursement system and the college has been required to change its policies and procedures. This has resulted in increased documentation needs, as well as a lengthy review process by DOE officials before financial aid funds are provided to Eastern to be distributed to students. Depending on the type of aid being reviewed, the funding has been delayed from the DOE anywhere from 45-90 days or more. The extent of these delays was greatly unexpected. Let me be clear. The college is not holding student financial aid in an account or using it elsewhere for college expenses. The results of the program review occurred from differences in interpretations of Eastern?s policies versus the DOE?s policies. Eastern staff are working diligently with the DOE to address these concerns and move through the new processes put in place by the DOE as quickly as possible. There has been a systematic approach to distribute funding by the different types of financial aid to our students. Our latest communication from the DOE indicated that the remaining financial aid and student loan funds would be made available for disbursement to students in the next 7-10 days. If you do not receive your financial aid in the next 7-10 days, there may be other issues delaying your disbursement. If you have questions about your specific situation, please call 918.465.0175. Staff members are available to research individual issues and provide updated information. We hope to be removed from the DOE?s reimbursement system soon so that these restrictions and delays will not happen to our students in the future. Thank you for your patience during this trying time. I apologize for any inconveniences this situation has caused. Eastern is, and always has been, committed to your education.
