Campus Resident Students,

Saturday, April 6.  Eastern will host the Sapphire Ball that evening and it
will cause some disruption for student meals.

Brunch – Students will be served brunch out of the Cyber Café from 11 a.m.
to 1 p.m. on Saturday.  Students will need to enter the main entrance on
the south side (circle drive) of the Student Center because we will be
setting up for the event.

Dinner – Students will be served pizza in their residence halls at 5 p.m

We apologize for any inconvenience and appreciate your understanding as
this event is important for continued scholarship funding.  Thank you.

Subject: [Eoscstudents] Future Teacher's Scholarship

If you are an education major please take a look at this scholarship opportunity. The Future Scholarship Program was established by the Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education as an incentive to encourage the preparation of teachers in critical shortage areas in the public schools of Oklahoma.

Eligibility:

·         The student must be a resident of Oklahoma

·         Full-time and part-time students are eligible for the scholarship; however, highest priority will be given to full-time (not less than 12 credit hours per semester) students 

·         Scholarship recipients must maintain no less than a 2.5 cumulative grade point average

·         Each recipient must agree to teach in a shortage area in Oklahoma public schools for a minimum of three (3) consecutive years upon graduation and licensure as a teacher. The eligible critical shortage areas are listed on the application.

The application process:

1.       Complete the attached application with all required items by the deadline of April 30, 2019.  The following documentation is required:

a.        First-time freshman must submit a copy of their high school transcript and ACT or SAT scores

b.      Students who have attended a post-secondary institution must submit official transcripts from all institutions attended

c.       All students must submit the essay portion of the application on a separate sheet

The amount of the scholarship is $400 ($200 fa/$200 sp).

The Music Department is excited to announce our Spring Concert on Thursday,
April 11 @ 6pm in Mitchell Auditorium. Admission is free and open to the
public. The Concert Band, Concert Choir, and Eastern's rock band, the
Eastern Expressions, will perform a variety of selections.

The Concert Band will perform my own arrangements of the Rolling Stones'
"Paint it Black" and Green Day's "American Idiot." The choir will perform a
unique arrangement of "Scarborough Fair," among several other songs. The
Expressions will conclude the concert with several songs, including The
Temptations' "Earth Angel" and Bob Dylan's "Make You Feel My Love."

exciting, you should consider enrolling in a Mass Communication course. You
don't have to be a major to take one, and if you are a General Studies
major, it will count toward your 21 credits from the General Studies Major
Field.

MCOMM 1113 -- Introduction to Mass Communication (Online)
**This course can also count as a general education elective for many
majors. It studies the history and cultural impacts that mass communication
has made on our society.

MCOMM 1213 -- News Reporting MW 11:15- 12:30 p.m.
**Improve your writing and listening skills in this class that studies the
fundamentals of journalistic writing.

MCOMM 1223 -- Video Production I MW 12:45-2 p.m.
**If you are looking to hone your video editing skills for a highlight
reel, music video, or for your YouTube channel, this class is a great class
to take. You will learn basic video production techniques that focus on
broadcast journalistic principles.

MCOMM 1101 -- Publication Productions Th 12:45-2
**This is practical experience in publication design, reporting,
photography, writing, and digital publishing.

I am very excited to announce the Latimer County Arts Council is producing
a community-wide Summer Musical, THE MUSIC MAN, *July 19-21*, in Wilburton
at Mitchell Auditorium. Many of you enjoyed the musical revue last spring,
so we are bringing back the same artistic team: Les and Ruth Brelsford will
co-direct, I will serve as music director, and Dottie Minshall will serve
as the choreographer.

*Auditions will be on Thursday, May 2 from 6-8pm, and Saturday, May 4 from
2-5pm in Pratt Hall*. We are hoping to have a large cast made up of
talented adults, students, and children (second grade and up). More
information will be posted closer to the auditions, but we need actors,
singers, dancers, seamstresses, builders, etc.

CAUTION to letters received listing an ‘Honor Society’ to join that is not from Eastern. 

“It’s no secret that businesses exploit college students. From loan sharks to credit card companies, predatory businesses from every industry seek to capitalize on our ignorance. Scam artists have found a new way to target impressionable college students: offering membership to “exclusive” honor societies and internship programs — at a price.

Unfortunately for students, NSCS and other organizations like it aren’t breaking the law. They’re legal tax-exempt, non-profit entities. The only way to stop these organizations is to do research before buying in. These groups know that suspicious students look them up regularly. Even on sites like College Confidential, organizations infiltrate forums with false information and paid-for testimonials. It’s important to look beyond the first page of search results and look on multiple sites for consensus on an honor society’s credibility.”

I personally have been asked by several students who have gotten these letters. I did some checking. This is what I found.  The reality is that those scholarships are available to anyone who would like to submit applications without going through any specific organization. They give you a link to the scholarships they promote, but you can find the same links and access and apply on your own.  It is a way to make money via students for their organization. It is a business to them.

 

On the other hand, Phi Theta Kappa is the National two year community college honor society and the one we promote on our campus.  It is only for community college students and you must be a member to have access to the transfer scholarships across the nation that are available upon graduation of a two year community college. PTK on our campus is used to enhance a students resume, garner transfer scholarships from being a PTK member on our campus when you receive your associates degree. Using your resume to gain other scholarship opportunities is a positive that comes from being invited based on your GPA and joining PTK.  

 

If you ever receive an invitation other than from Eastern’s Phi Theta Kappa honor society, I would proceed with caution and take the steps to see if they are legit! I will be happy to help you find answers to  questions about any letter you receive that states it is an ‘honor society’ etc.

Tomorrow, May 1, the Bookstore will have a 20% off sale on all clothing and
gift items. This will be a one-day event so be sure to come in and get the
gifts needed for your graduates or yourself to represent out school.

Subject: [Eoscstudents] Housing Check-Out Procedure

Greetings residential students,

Check out time is fast approaching.  Please be sure to follow all of the
Eastern room check-out procedures to avoid fines.

*Preparing Your Room for Moving Out (Complete in order)*

1.  Remove all non-college property from the room, bathrooms, closets,
vanities, drawers, and cabinets.

2.  Return all college property (furniture, mattresses, etc.) to its
appropriate location.

3.  Clean your portion of the room thoroughly

4.  Clean all writing, marks, and residue from walls, ceilings, and doors.

5.  Vacuum the carpet in your room or sweep/mop the floor, including under
beds.

6.  Empty trash to the designated dumpsters outside your hall (DO NOT leave
in hallways, bathrooms, lounges, or other common areas.)

7.  If there are any damages in your room that are not noted on the Room
Inventory Checklist form that you filled out when you checked into the room
and that you would like to discuss, it must be done at this time.  Housing
personnel will complete a final inspection afterwards and collect your key.

*Once this process is completed you will no longer have access to the
room.  Thank you

Subject: [Eoscstudents] EOSC to NSU Transfer Scholarship

If you are planning to attend NSU in the fall then this Eastern Oklahoma
State College to Northeastern State University $8,000 Transfer Scholarship
opportunity is for you. Scholarship applicants must complete the attached
application with the supporting documentation and submit to the scholarship
office by the deadline of May 9, 2019. Criteria for scholarship:

 

.         Student must have earned an EOSC Associate Degree prior to fall
2019 

.         Student must have a minimum grade point average of at least a 3.8 

.          Submit an official college transcript 

.          Submit a resume' (2 page limit)

.          Submit a scholarship essay stating why the scholarship is
important and how it will help the applicant achieve his/her goals (not to
exceed 200 words)

 

Recipient(s) must remain continuously enrolled at NSU for the duration of
the award and must complete 24 hours per academic year with a 3.0 cumulative
GPA to remain eligible for the 2nd year of the award.

 

Due to time constraints only the selected recipient(s) will be notified.

 

Please either mail application so it arrives by the deadline or bring it to
