From news at eosc.edu Mon Mar 1 18:06:44 2021 From: news at eosc.edu (EOSC News) Date: Mon, 1 Mar 2021 18:06:44 -0600 Subject: [Eoscstudents] =?utf-8?q?EOSC_Campuses_Receive_=E2=80=9CAll_Clear?= =?utf-8?q?=E2=80=9D_After_Bomb_Threat?= Message-ID: Eastern Oklahoma State College has been given the “all clear” from local and statewide authorities after a bomb threat was received earlier today. Students and employees were evacuated at the Wilburton and McAlester campuses and classes were canceled as a safety precaution. Eastern’s Campus Police coordinated with multiple agencies to perform a complete sweep of the Wilburton and McAlester campuses and no explosive devices were found. Eastern President Dr. Janet Wansick thanked law enforcement officials and the local businesses and community organizations that assisted with the situation. “After the threat was received, our campus employees immediately responded and put our emergency protocols in action. We have practiced drills for situations like this and I am pleased with the quick response from students, faculty and staff to evacuate in a safe manner. The most important thing is everyone is safe,” Wansick said. “I am extremely appreciative of the assistance we received today from local and state law enforcement agencies, as well as local businesses and community organizations that offered to shelter and feed our students and employees who were displaced.” Wansick said the threat was delivered in the form of an email that was not immediately traceable. The communication contained a bomb threat as well as a threat of additional violence. Although there was no specific location identified, Wansick said the decision was made to evacuate the Wilburton and McAlester campuses in an abundance of caution. Multiple agencies responded to assist with the situation, including EOSC Campus Police, Wilburton Police Department, Wilburton Volunteer Fire Department, Oklahoma Highway Patrol, Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation, Latimer County Sherriff’s Department, Latimer County Emergency Management, Choctaw Nation Tribal Police, A-OK Railroad Police, and the McAlester Police Department. Wansick said the Choctaw Nation Community Center and Wilburton First United Methodist Church for sheltering students during the evacuation. The Community State Bank also provided meals, snacks and water for students, staff and law enforcement officials. Students may now return to their residence halls. Campus buildings are locked due to personal items that were left behind during evacuation. Students or employees who need to retrieve personal items from a classroom or other building this evening should call Campus Police at 918-465-1718. All campuses will return to normal operations on Tuesday, March 2. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Counseling services are available Message-ID: Sometimes stressful events can affect our health and well-being. Increased anxiety, feelings of fear or discomfort, and heightened emotions are normal reactions to a stressful situation. It’s always important to prioritize your well-being, but it’s even more important right now. The above practices can support you in balancing your mental and emotional health, and give you strength and support. *Know the signs of stress in yourself and your loved ones:* - Not sleeping or sleeping too much - No appetite or eating too much, even when you are not hungry - Experiencing an increase in headaches, muscle aches, frequent colds, and minor illnesses - Taking deep breaths and feeling slightly light-headed when you think about a situation you can’t control - Becoming frequently irritable, frustrated, angry, impatient, and/or anxious - Having difficulty concentrating - Crying frequently or worrying excessively - Wanting to be alone most of the time - Having difficulty giving or accepting help - Feeling overwhelming stress that lasts more than a few days *Here are some ideas to help you manage stress and cultivate mindfulness:* - Take care of yourself. Get enough sleep, exercise, and eat healthy meals. - Keep in touch with your family, friends and classmates. Ask how they’re doing and let them know you care. - Make time to give yourself a break. - Practice relaxation. There are many ways to do this: yoga, meditation, reading, listening to music, or going for a walk. - Avoid drugs and alcohol. - Focus on what you can control. Try to separate what you can control from what you can’t and let go of what you can’t control. - Keep things in perspective. Try to see things as ‘glass half full’ – if you expect things to go wrong or see things in a negative light, you will more likely feel stressed. - Focus on the positives. Try to focus on your strengths and the positive things around you. - Talk it out. If you’re struggling, talk to your family or friends, your medical provider, or a counselor about what you are experiencing. It’s okay to ask for help. If you feel you need immediate assistance, please contact the Office of Student Services at 918-465-1818. Eastern partners with the Health and Wellness Center to provide medical services, behavioral health services and counseling services to students. Covered services are provided free of charge for students without health insurance. Visit eosc.edu/health to learn more.
