Good Afternoon:<br>
It has been awhile since I have been in the land of civilization. I've
been living like a caveman in my home and hometown due to the ice
storm. Coming to campus is like coming to a different country - the
difference in the weather (lack of ice everywhere) is amazing - I feel
guilty for my jealousy of the luxuries Wilburton and our campus
possess. I feel like a child in a candy shop, I touch a light switch
and it actually comes on (that is such a novel idea - I wish they could
get that process working in my own home). I hope no one has to endure
what we have been enduring since late Friday night - it will make you
value what you take for granted.<br>
<br>
Now for the important stuff. As you might remember this is National
Stalking Awareness month. I want to catch you up on facts and
information in reference to Stalking in America.<br>
<br>
<b>Did You Know: </b><br>
31% of women are stalked by a current or former intimate partner are
also sexually assaulted by that partner.<br>
<br>
73% of intimate partner stalkers verbally threatened victims with
physical violence, and almost 46% of victims experienced one or more
violent incidents by the stalker.<br>
<br>
The average duration of stalking is 1.8 years.<br>
<br>
If stalking involves intimate partners, the average duration of
stalking increases to 2.2 years.<br>
<br>
28% of female victims and 10% of male victims obtained a protective
order. 69% of female victims and 81% of male victims had the
protection order violated.<br>
<br>
<b>Study of Stalkers - Did You Know:<br>
</b>78% of stalkers use more than one means of approach.<br>
<br>
Weapons are used to harm or threaten victims in 1 out of 5 cases.<br>
<br>
Almost 1/3 of Stalkers have stalked before.<br>
<br>
Intimate partner stalkers frequently approach their targets, and their
behaviors escalate quickly.<br>
<br>
<b>Stalking and Intimate Partner Femicide (</b>murder of a woman<b>) -
Did You Know:<br>
</b><br>
89% of femicide victims who had been physically abused had also been
stalked in the 12 months before the murder.<br>
<br>
79% of abused femicide victims reported stalking during the same period
that they reported abuse.<br>
<br>
54% of femicide victims reported stalking to police before they were
killed by their stalkers.<br>
<br>
<b>Did You Know:<br>
<br>
</b>15 states classify staling as a felony upon the first offense.<br>
<br>
34 states classify staling as a felony upon the second offense and/or
when the crime involves aggravating factors.<br>
<br>
Aggravating factors may include: possession of a deadly weapon;
violation of a court order or condition of probation/parole; victims
under 16; same victim as prior occasions.<br>
<br>
Tomorrow we will begin to look at 10 things you need to know about
Stalking and what you need to do to protect yourself and remain safe.
Remember always be mindful of your surroundings and don't dismiss the
unwanted advances or attention of another person as harmless (most
times they can be - lean toward safety vs. becoming a victim.<br>
