active shooter drill this week on campus.<span>
</span></font><font color="#000000">In recent days there has been a lot of talk about what to do in the
event of an active shooter or other active threat on campus.</font><span><font color="#000000"> </font></span><font color="#000000">In the EOSC Student Services/Student Life office
(E.E. Tourtellotte Student Center 208) we have made available our Emergency Protocol
Guide flip chart for those who wish a quick guide to assist in dealing with
campus emergencies (see attached).</font><span><font color="#000000"> </font></span><font color="#000000">These are given to
building monitors and other employees upon request but are also available to
students.</font><span><font color="#000000"> </font></span><font color="#000000">According to The Department of
Homeland Security, Active Shooter How to Respond (2008), in the event of an
active threat quickly determine the most reasonable way to protect your own
life. Remember that others are likely to follow you during an active shooter
situation.</font><span><font color="#000000"> </font></span><font color="#000000">Follow these steps.</font></span></p><font color="#000000" face="Times New Roman" size="3">
</font><p style="margin:0in 0in 10pt"><span style="line-height:115%;font-family:"times new roman","serif";font-size:14pt"><font color="#000000">1. Evacuate (Run) </font></span></p><font color="#000000" face="Times New Roman" size="3">
</font><p style="margin:0in 0in 10pt"><span style="line-height:115%;font-family:"times new roman","serif";font-size:14pt"><font color="#000000">If there is an accessible escape path, attempt to
evacuate the premises. Be sure to:</font></span></p><font color="#000000" face="Times New Roman" size="3">
</font><p style="margin:0in 0in 10pt"><span style="line-height:115%;font-family:"times new roman","serif";font-size:14pt"><font color="#000000">• Have an escape route and plan in mind</font></span></p><font color="#000000" face="Times New Roman" size="3">
</font><p style="margin:0in 0in 10pt"><span style="line-height:115%;font-family:"times new roman","serif";font-size:14pt"><font color="#000000">• Evacuate regardless of whether others agree to
follow</font></span></p><font color="#000000" face="Times New Roman" size="3">
</font><p style="margin:0in 0in 10pt"><span style="line-height:115%;font-family:"times new roman","serif";font-size:14pt"><font color="#000000">• Leave your belongings behind</font></span></p><font color="#000000" face="Times New Roman" size="3">
</font><p style="margin:0in 0in 10pt"><span style="line-height:115%;font-family:"times new roman","serif";font-size:14pt"><font color="#000000">• Help others escape, if possible</font></span></p><font color="#000000" face="Times New Roman" size="3">

the active shooter may be</font></span></p><font color="#000000" face="Times New Roman" size="3">
</font><p style="margin:0in 0in 10pt"><span style="line-height:115%;font-family:"times new roman","serif";font-size:14pt"><font color="#000000">• Keep your hands visible</font></span></p><font color="#000000" face="Times New Roman" size="3">
</font><p style="margin:0in 0in 10pt"><span style="line-height:115%;font-family:"times new roman","serif";font-size:14pt"><font color="#000000">• Follow the instructions of any police officers</font></span></p><font color="#000000" face="Times New Roman" size="3">
</font><p style="margin:0in 0in 10pt"><span style="line-height:115%;font-family:"times new roman","serif";font-size:14pt"><font color="#000000">• Do not attempt to move wounded people</font></span></p><font color="#000000" face="Times New Roman" size="3">

</font><p style="margin:0in 0in 10pt"><span style="line-height:115%;font-family:"times new roman","serif";font-size:14pt"><font color="#000000">If evacuation is not possible, find a place to hide
where the active shooter is less likely to find you. Your hiding place should:</font></span></p><font color="#000000" face="Times New Roman" size="3">
</font><p style="margin:0in 0in 10pt"><span style="line-height:115%;font-family:"times new roman","serif";font-size:14pt"><font color="#000000">• Be out of the active shooter’s view</font></span></p><font color="#000000" face="Times New Roman" size="3">
</font><p style="margin:0in 0in 10pt"><span style="line-height:115%;font-family:"times new roman","serif";font-size:14pt"><font color="#000000">• Provide protection if shots are fired in your
direction (i.e., an office with a closed and locked door)</font></span></p><font color="#000000" face="Times New Roman" size="3">
</font><p style="margin:0in 0in 10pt"><span style="line-height:115%;font-family:"times new roman","serif";font-size:14pt"><font color="#000000">• Not trap you or restrict your options for movement</font></span></p><font color="#000000" face="Times New Roman" size="3">

hiding place:</font></span></p><font color="#000000" face="Times New Roman" size="3">
</font><p style="margin:0in 0in 10pt"><span style="line-height:115%;font-family:"times new roman","serif";font-size:14pt"><font color="#000000">• Lock the door</font></span></p><font color="#000000" face="Times New Roman" size="3">

a last resort, and only when your life is in imminent danger, attempt to
