Hansen To Be Nominated For Deputy Secretary of Education

The White House Office Press Secretary announced March 8, that President
George Bush intends to nominate Bill Hansen as the Deputy Secretary of
Education. Hansen is currently the executive director of the Education
Finance Council. He worked in the Department of Education from 1981 to 1993
serving several positions including Assistant Secretary for Management and
Budget and Chief Financial Officer from 1991 to 1993. Hansen will oversee
day-to-day operations at the Department of Education.

Bill is a well-known and much admired figure in the higher education
community.  He enjoys excellent working relationships with House and Senate
members of both parities and is considered to have contributed significantly
to the Republican support for the Federal Pell Grant program in recent
years.

Earlier this year, Bill was named by then President-Elect Bush to head the
Department of Education transition team.  From that date to the present, his
appointment to the position of Deputy Secretary had been widely rumored.

At the Department, Bill is expected to serve as a key policymaker on higher
education issues, in part due to the limited experience and focus of
Secretary Paige in this area.  He is also expected to play a major
management role in the day-to-day operations of the Department.

News of Bill's nomination was received enthusiastically in the student loan
community. "Bill is well-known for his sense of fairness and is an
enthusiastic supporter of the private sector. We could not have hoped for a
better appointment as Deputy Secretary," said one key Washington lender
representative.

As this Update is issued, the timetable for Senate confirmation is not
known. A speedy process, however, is considered likely.

Guarantee (NOLG).   These changes should be migrated tonight and the new
NOLG's will begin printing tomorrow.  Clients using Remote Guarantee

Subject: [Lender] Product Forum Dates

As you will recall, there was discussion at the last OLAC meeting about
having a 
"Product Forum" for lenders sometime towards the end of March.  This day
would be devoted to presentations by various organizations that sponsor
school based loan processing systems.  OGSLP is still planning on hosting
such an event, however the actual date will need to be sometime in late
April or during the month of May.  Please let us know of late April or May
dates that will NOT work for you and we will attempt to plan around them.

I am very sad to report to you that Rick Edington's father, who many of you
knew had been hospitalized for the past several weeks with serious heart
problems, passed away during the night last night.  Even though we knew he
had been through a very rough ordeal lately, we also knew he was improving
steadily so this has come as a shock to all of us and especially, I'm sure,
to Rick and his family.

When more information is available, we will certainly pass that along to
you.

Subject: [Lender] Information about funeral services for Rick Edington's father

The funeral service for Rick's father, Clyde E. Edington,  will be Monday at
2:30 p.m. at First Freewill Baptist Church in Norman.  The church is located
at 2601 24th Ave. SE  

For those wishing to make donations in lieu of flowers, the family has
indicated the American Heart Association.  

Driving directions for the church:  From I-35,  travel east on Highway 9
about 6 miles.  You'll pass Perfect Swing Family Fun Center on the
right(south side of Highway 9).  The church is the next building past
Perfect Swing. Take the SE 24th St. exit.and you'll drive right into the
parking lot of the church.  

The funeral home is Guardian-Mayes, located at 500 Alameda, in Norman.  The
phone is 329-9292.
