We will meet in our usual spots and it will again be ably chaired by Dr. Elicia Pollard in my absence. I will be back to chair the April meeting. One order of business must be finalizing the elections not only for the new Faculty Senate members but also for the motion passed about adjunct salaries. I will gladly entertain any other items to be put upon the agenda. There is currently a Student Evaluation committee that is studying not only the evaluation document but, maybe more critically, the means of implementing it. It is chaired by Dr. Aliya Chaudry. I sit on it, as does Ms. Joanna Howard and others. I would recommend that concerns and ideas be addressed to Dr. Chaudry. This does not stop the Faculty Senate from further discussing the matter. I know we have all been distressed by the exceedingly low response rates, rates that seem much lower than other schools as well as what we used to get with the in-class paper form. In addition, it is my position that the effort should be faculty-driven, since it impacts FACULTY most. As President Smith has asked for recommendations to be submitted to him from the Faculty Senate, then it seems imperative that we should proceed as requested. This matter can be discussed further at the upcoming Faculty Senate meeting, and as the meeting is open to all faculty, I hope faculty members will either forward your comments/concerns to me about the matter and/or attend the meeting. Faculty,I was giving a test yesterday afternoon when I got the word of an emergency budget meeting of the vice president's, deans, budget committee, and the President. Langston had just gotten word that we were getting more cuts that day (Thursday), and the state was requiring us to have a revised budget in their hands today (Friday). Because it is the feeling that we will get more cuts during this fiscal year, and then even more in the new fiscal year that starts July 1, it was decided that this group will start meeting regularly during the time usually reserved for the Administrative Council. The President will be sending out a memo on our most recent crisis and I will let him spell out the details. The administration is very concerned that all parts of the Langston University community -- Langston, Tulsa, Oklahoma City, faculty and staff -- realize had deadly serious this crisis is. It is my opinion that we will be cutting into the muscle of the University even before July 1. Almost all options are on the table. I do not say that to scare the faculty but to simply make you all aware that our school, our learning community, is facing a severe threat. When you get communications from the Administration on this matter, know that the threat is real, and also know that the whole Langston learning community will be kept as informed as possible as things develop. Furthermore, realize that your input on this matter will be considered since we are all in this together. Message-ID: 3-15-16 Fri // 1:13 p.Faculty,This week President Smith sent out a call for a Langston University town hall meeting to be held on Monday, March 28, from 8 - 9:00 a.m. It is to discuss the ongoing budget crisis. I strongly urge faculty to attend. On the Langston campus it will take place in the Multi-Purpose building. On the Tulsa and Oklahoma City campuses it will be held in their respective video conferencing rooms. >From Monday through Wednesday of this past week a budget crisis group drawn from all segments of the Langston University community met, hammering out a very specific set of cuts. We had to meet a State Regents' demand for a proposed 2017 budget with a 12% cut, that on top of all the cuts we've already taken this year. It was hard, frustrating task and it led to wide discussions. No one got what they wanted but we got to the 12% cuts. The meeting Monday will not be the final word -- most of us expect more cuts than this -- but it can be the time we truly establish a dialog within our University community. For those who hold to theories that everything will be cut except administrative departments, come and listen and, if need be, challenge the presenters. I will state that every Vice President had to make the same 12% cuts. We now have an administration and a process that seek to be transparent and seek to hear ideas from faculty and staff. It is our responsibility as members of the Langston University community to participate and be informed on this critical matter. Please do attend the meeting Monday at 8 a.m. Sincerely, Jim ShowalterChair, Faculty Senate -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... If this did not occur, each school should now decide which existing representatives will serve 1-, 2- or 3-year terms. The representative serving a 1-year term will complete his or her tenure at the end of 2015-2016 academic year and will be replaced by the newly elected representative. If you have questions regarding the election procedures, please feel free to contact me or Dr. James Showalter, LUFS Chair, at jlshowalter at langston.edu. D2L LU Faculty Development Navigation video (adjust volume) The video is unlisted, so you must have the link to view, or view as embedded on the D2L course home page. https://youtu.be/nTqq-aaor5s Access to the presentations will not change. There are three ways you can participate in faculty development. The format for presentations have been revised to offer you as the faculty ample opportunities to connect with your colleagues and receive beneficial information for practice. All presentations, unless otherwise posted, will take place in person, in Gandy Hall, first floor, Rooms 106-108, which is the computer lab. You may either attend this session in person, or utilize the other two options. All sessions will be broadcast as webinars, as they are occurring. This method will allow you to attend the session from any location you wish. You will have access to Adobe Connect in two ways, through the D2L course or from the link posted in each D2L calendar event. In live presentations you will be able to ask questions to the presenter via the chat box on screen. If you are not sure about Adobe Connect or have no experience with it, please contact CTI in advance of the presentation and they will assist you with getting set up 405-466-2001. The third option, allows you to watch the presentation as an archived file in the D2L course, immediately after the presentation takes place. For questions, comments, or suggestions to the presenter, you will need to contact that presenter through email. We are also offering three ways to evaluate presentations this year, you will have the choice to receive a paper version in person, you will be able to download an evaluation from the D2L content section, or select the presenters name in the content section and enter your response into a google form. Please let us know if you have any questions, comments, or concerns, or simply require additional information by responding to the email.
