<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align:justify">Service learning, as applied within an educational environment, is defined as a teaching and learning tool.<span style="mso-spacerun:yes">
</span>This teaching and learning tool combines community service with academic study in ways that motivate student learning.<span style="mso-spacerun:yes">
</span>Students are required to actively participate in structured events which give them opportunities to plan and use skills and knowledge learned in the classroom to address community needs in real-life situations.<span style="mso-spacerun:yes">
</span>In this manner, service learning extends beyond the classroom and fosters a sense of caring for others in the community. The key components to consider when designing a service learning component for a course is to include an academically-based community
service project directed at addressing any aspect of community health needs combined with an academically structured learning experience. The student is involved in
<i style="mso-bidi-font-style:normal">selecting, designing, implementing, assessing and reflecting
</i>on the learning experience, and <i style="mso-bidi-font-style:normal">participating in addressing any aspect of health and disease concerns within the community</i>.<span style="mso-spacerun:yes">
</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align:justify">Thus, students are able to see the connection between service and academic work. Success of the service learning activity is evaluated against not only whether the course teaching objectives are met but also whether
the community partner’s need objectives and the student’s learning objectives are met. The benefits and implications of a service learning activity are evident at multiple levels and extend beyond the borders of Langston University.<span style="mso-spacerun:yes">
</span>Regardless of the course or discipline, using service learning as a teaching and learning tool serves to enhance student learning and create strong community-campus partnerships.
