I'd like to ask everyone to take a few moments and register. We'll meet Friday, February 13th, 2015, at the Moore-Norman Technology Center in Oklahoma City. The registration form is attached to this email, but you can also locate them on our website, http://oacada.org. If you need a hotel, we have two options listed on our website (Best Western and La Quinta). Let them know you are with OACADA to receive a special discount. ***** We're very excited for our keynote speaker, Dr. Philip Uri Treisman. He is the founder and Executive Director of The Charles A. Dana Center at the University of Texas at Austin, and he has been instrumental in the Emerging Scholars Program, which assists students from underprivileged backgrounds to excel in calculus and science courses. Dr. Treisman will be speaking on remediation, pathways, and engaging faculty members, which are topics that impact quite a few of us. ***** Don't forget to nominate someone for the Outstanding Advisor, or Outstanding Advising Administrator! This is a major award, folks, so take advantage of it. And also, those of you furthering your education can apply for an OACADA Scholarship toward the cost of tuition and fees. See the attachment for nomination/application forms. ***** Our Early Bird registration cost is $55.00, which includes breakfast, lunch, all-day conference attendance, and a year of OACADA membership. The deadline to secure this price is Monday, February 2nd. Also, don't forget that if you attend the closing session, you can be entered into the Grand Prize Drawing for $200 in cash. And who doesn't like cash? Swadley's BBQ will cater breakfast and lunch, so there will be some delicious brisket in your future, unless you checked the 'Vegetarian' box on your Registration form (and then you'll have something equally delicious). ***** Those of you who have information to share with your peers on the subject of "Student Success, Persistence, and Graduation" have until February 2nd to submit a proposal for a breakout session. You can choose a 50 or 75 minute session, and some excellent topic ideas could address: math remediation issues and solutions; remediation success in general; student engagement in advising; retention tactics; or goal-focused advising. We'd love to have you present! Remember, we waive registration fees for lead presenters... (hint hint, for those of you facing budget shortages). ***** I also want to take a minute to touch on a new breakout session tactic that we're trying out at this conference. As you know, OACADA has a representative for each type of institution in our state: 2-year schools (Oklahoma City Community College, Tulsa Community College, etc.), Private schools (The University of Tulsa, etc.), Regionals schools (Northeastern State University, Cameron University, etc.), and Comprehensive schools (OU and OSU). Your conference evaluations have consistently asked for more sessions geared towards issues and concerns facing your particular type of institution. So in response we have set aside a breakout session in the afternoon for advisors from each institution type to gather together and meet your OACADA representative. This is your opportunity to bring up topics concerning your schools, to share information with your peers, to network and make connections, and to find solutions to common issues. We fully expect that issues or questions will arise out of these sessions that require further research and follow up - yet, this is a great opportunity for you and your representative to form a small email group addressing those answers, to form ad hoc groups if there are no ready answers, and perhaps for you to bring a full breakout session to your peers at the next conference. If your representatives have not already been in touch with you, they will be. We are asking for you to bring 1 or 2 discussion points, and be ready to share your knowledge with others. ***** Here's our tentative conference schedule (subject to change). We'll send out a finalized version closer to the 13th: Registration opens - 8 am Welcome - 8:45 am Keynote speaker - 9 am - 9:50 am Breakout Session One - 10 am - 10:50 am Breakout Session Two - 11 am - 12:15 pm Lunch (and some giveaways) - 12:15 - 1:30 pm State Regents update - 1:30 - 2:00 pm Breakout Session Three - 2:10 - 3:00 pm Closing session and Grand Prize drawing - 3:10 - 3:30 pm ***** I look forward to seeing all of you on the 13th. Come hungry, and don't forget to bring some school swag for giveaways! The revisions are effective Fall 2015. In July 2010, the Teacher Professional Development Residency Program (TPDRP) was placed on a two year moratorium which was to remain in effect until June 30, 2012. On May 10, 2012, Governor Fallin signed Senate Bill 1797 to extend the moratorium until July 2014. However, the induction program, in its previous form, was never reinstated. The TPDRP that was originally mandated in 1997 is no longer in effect; therefore, it has been deleted from State Regents' policy. As background, the revisions to the Credit for Extrainstitutional Learning policy update nomenclature and publications referenced in policy and align with language used nationally relative to credit for prior learning. Revisions to the policy include the following: ? Changed the title from Credit for Extrainstitutional Learning to Credit for Prior Learning; ? Added a new section regarding oversight and evaluation of credits awarded for prior learning; ? Added use of the systemwide assessment inventory as an option for institutions to validate prior learning for awarding credit; and ? Added new sections that provide guidance regarding direct instruction of coursework from technology centers, use of the systemwide technical assessment inventory, and oversight and evaluation of awarding credit through prior learning assessments. Additionally, the State Regents approved revisions to the Cooperative Alliances Between Higher Education Institutions and Technology Centers policy that align with current HLC standards for accreditation and assumed practices. Moreover, the revisions create a policy framework that outlines the process through which higher education institutions may enter into contractual arrangements with non-degree entities. Revisions to the policy include the following: ? Change the title from Cooperative Alliances Between Higher Education Institutions and Technology Centers to Contractual Arrangements Between Higher Education Institutions and Other Entities; ? Added requirements of and elements within a contractual arrangement; and ? Reporting requirements of contractual arrangements that focus on the effectiveness and efficiency of these arrangements. Moreover, revisions to the Teacher Education policy align with the provisions of House Bill 2885 regarding the first year residency program. These changes establish guidelines to assist in the development of first year residency committees. Revisions to the policy include the following: ? Added new definitions for mentor teacher, residency committee, and resident teacher; and ? Added a new section that provides guidelines for participation on residency year committees. An important component of the policy implementation includes the development of procedures for the Academic Affairs Procedures Handbook. Over the next couple of months, the Council on Instruction handbook committee will develop procedures that align with the aforementioned policy revisions to provide increased guidance to institutions. It will take several weeks for the public policy document to reflect these changes; therefore, for your reference, the updated policies are attached. Please let me know if you have questions concerning these changes. Ciao, Jos? Jos? Dela Cruz, M.Ed.
