From redington at ogslp.org Thu Nov 2 15:50:37 2006 From: redington at ogslp.org (Edington, Rick) Date: Thu Nov 2 15:49:26 2006 Subject: [Oasfaa] College Goal Sunday 2007 Message-ID: <297AF473E6053445A2007FAB9E8BCACF0F3401@elgar.lan.ogslp.org> Are you interested in participating in a local version of a national effort designed to target and assist first-generation college going families? If the answer is yes, then please join your colleagues in the 5th year of the Oklahoma College Goal Sunday program! How does this program work? College Goal Sunday (CGS) is a national initiative, supported by the Lumina Foundation, the National Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators (NASFAA) and states throughout the country, including Oklahoma. Participating schools provide families with assistance in completing the FAFSA and provide important information about the college experience. Many attendees are first-generation college-going families who may be intimidated by traditional college events. Therefore, it's always helpful to have staff from student support departments and programs available to assist attendees. Additional information about the national program is available at http://www.collegegoalsundayusa.org/ . When will these events occur? February 11, 2007 (afternoon) What type of support is provided for Oklahoma CGS sites? The Oklahoma College Goal Sunday program provides a variety of services and materials designed to support our local CGS sites. These free services include a variety of publicity tools and centralized program management that includes direct mailings and a Web site presence. Examples of free CGS Site support include: Oklahoma College Goal Sunday Web site that includes Oklahoma site listings and information Statewide press release highlighting the Oklahoma CGS program Advertising flyers Drop Ads in a variety of sizes Public Service Announcements CGS T-shirts for all volunteers Direct mailings to a wide variety of audiences including: High school counselors, principals, Boys & Girls Club organizations, Big Brothers/Little Sisters groups, faith-based organizations, workforce development sites, public libraries, tribal offices and foster youth organizations. Additionally, the Oklahoma CGS program provides grants in the amount of $1,500 per site to be used to craft a local publicity campaign for the school's CGS site. The combination of a statewide publicity campaign matched with local efforts helps ensure maximum attendance at Oklahoma CGS events. How do I apply to host a 2007 Oklahoma College Goal Sunday site? 1) If you are interested in participating this year as a CGS site or need additional program information, please contact Rick Edington at redington@ogslp.org or (405) 234-4333. 2) Apply for a publicity grant. In Oklahoma, grant dollars provided by Lumina Foundation are distributed equally to all sites and are to be used to promote their CGS event. For the 2007 program, each site is eligible to apply for a publicity grant in the amount of $1,500. To apply for a publicity grant please complete a publicity grant application which is available at http://www.ogslp.org/CGS/ . Completed applications should be submitted no later than December 1, 2006 to: Rick Edington Director for Operations & Client Services Oklahoma Guaranteed Student Loan Program P.O. Box 3000 Oklahoma City, OK 73101-3000 It is recommended that you work with your campus' or organization's Public Relations office to design the best publicity campaign for your local area. If you have additional students to claim for fall awards, please submit your report as early in the week as possible. Be sure to send a message to reports@otag.org when you upload your Award Claim Form to the reports website --- otherwise, we won't know that you have submitted an Award Claim Form. Any requests for exception to the November 10 deadline that are due to extraordinary circumstances must be submitted in writing to the Chancellor for consideration. Please send a message to reports@otag.org if you would like to request the following reports: 1. Pre-populated Award Claim Form 2. Work copy of Fall 2006 Award Reconciliation Report -- we will automatically send this report to all institutions once all fall disbursement reporting has been finalized; however, we can at this time, upon your request, provide a "work" copy as a final check of your fall disbursement activity to date. For your information, attached is a spreadsheet that reflects each institution's award totals for fall 2006 as of today (includes activity from Award Claims and Disbursement Reports processed through this morning) and provides both 2004-2005 and 2005-2006 end-of-year awards data for comparison purposes. At this time 2006-2007 OTAG funds are undercommitted by $2 million. Reporting to the District Director of Student Financial Aid, the Coordinator will develop and manage a comprehensive district-wide default prevention and financial education initiative. Although MCC's most recent Cohort Default Rate is only 3.9%, we recognize the need for an aggressive program to educate and support our students throughout the loan life cycle. This is an exciting opportunity for an energetic, self-motivated person who understands the federal student loan programs. A Bachelor's Degree is required and we prefer candidates who hold or are willing to pursue Certified Financial Planner certification. Although some student contact will be involved, this is primarily a project management position. The salary range is $3,591 to $3,924 per month (Range 8E) and we offer really excellent benefits. Although partially funded through a Default Prevention Grant from the Missouri Department of Higher Education, this is a permanent MCC position. I would be more than happy to discuss the position with you, if it piques your interest! We have approximately 140 people attending our training at Rose State College's Tom Steed Center on Friday. REGISTRATION IS NOW CLOSED. If you've forgotten what the training is supposed to cover, see the "Workshop Content" attached. In case you're not sure if you're registered or who from your school is registered, I've attached a list of registrants. It is in school order. If your entry is grayed out, it's because you told me you needed to cancel (your school will still get a set of materials by mail). We have FIFTY-NINE schools represented. Remember that each school will get ONE set of materials. We had to order additional sets from NASFAA to make sure every school gets one. Be sure to bring a three ring binder for your materials, it needs to be at least 3/4". The materials are shrink wrapped; I WILL point and laugh when you drop it and the pages go everywhere, and we will keep on teaching while you're on your knees picking up paper, so don't forget the binder! I've made a command decision and decided to provide copies of the Powerpoint slides to all attendees (28 pages front/back). I think it will make it much easier to follow along for those who don't have the materials. Registration begins at 8:30 (coffee, juice, pastries available) and TRAINING BEGINS PROMPTLY AT NINE A.M. LUNCH IS ON YOUR OWN. Attached is a list of local eateries (thanks to Lori Perry and Pam Chandler for compiling this), we'll have additional copies available on Friday. DON'T PLAN ON A LEISURELY LUNCH, WE WILL START BACK ON TIME WHETHER YOU ARE THERE OR NOT. Our goal is to finish by 4 p.m. so you don't get caught in the afternoon Tinker traffic. Speaking of traffic, there is a map of the Rose State campus on the eateries list. If you want a driving map, go to http://www.rose.edu/about/index.htm and select Proximity Map. You will be pleased to note that there is no change in the annual fee structure and that the form is virtually the same as that used for the 2006 process. One slight change that was made in an effort to assist the Awards Committee is that the questions about years in SWASFAA and years in the aid profession are now required. This means that these two are amongst the blanks that must be completed before your form can be submitted. We appreciate your efforts to be as accurate as possible when completing these and all other questions on the membership form. Should you have problems with your login or password, remember to contact support@swasfaa.org. Your 2007 SWASFAA membership chair is Lori Perry who can be reached at lperry@rose.edu. Remember that SWASFAA offices officially transition after December 31 so Lori does not yet have access to all of the pertinent data. She will be working closely with June Hagler (jhagler@smu.edu), the 2006 membership chair, as transitions progress. Get those memberships renewed and make sure your friends/colleagues who are not members but should be know that this is now available! As you will recall there was a limited one-time source of residual scholarship funds available to be awarded to students from the federal Gear Up grant. We intially did not expect the funds to be sufficient for the spring 2007 semester awards. However based on fall claims to date, we now expect adequate funds available for spring semester awards. The funds are required to be awarded under criteria similar to the OHLAP-Plus award of previous years. The funds are available to students under the following stipulations: * The student must be receiving an OHLAP award * The student must have graduated from high school in 2002 or before * The student must be eligible for a Pell Grant of any amount (EFC of $3,850 or less, this is the same as fall 2006) * The amount of the award will be equivalent to the student's OHLAP award * The award must not create an overaward situation; however, because these funds are federal GEAR UP funds, the award can be used to replace EFC If you have further questions, please contact Lynn Dennis at ldennis@osrhe.edu or me at calexander@osrhe.edu. All of these institutions have been either notified that a Disbursement Report has been uploaded to the file transfer website or have been contacted for additional information/clarification needed to complete their final award claims. If your institution uploaded an Award Claim Form by the deadline, and you have not heard from us, please CONTACT THE OTAG OFFICE IMMEDIATELY. Be aware that unless you notified us that your report was available for downloading, we have not looked for it and cannot easily do so with hundreds of files on the server. We appreciate everyone's cooperation in meeting the deadline, and we now ask that you complete the disbursement of funds to your students as quickly as possible, which will enable us to determine funds availability for the spring 2007 semester. We do expect to extend the awarding cutoff date for spring 2007 beyond the current 4-25-05 FAFSA receipt cutoff, and we plan to make an announcement in this regard by December 1. Please contact the OTAG office if you have questions concerning your final request for fall 2006 awards and disbursement of funds. *********************** Shiela Joyner, Director Oklahoma Tuition Aid Grant Program Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education P. The 2006 awards data reflected assumes that the students paid in fall will receive the same amount in the spring semester. With total 2006-2007 OTAG available funding of $19,951,901 and only $18,135,178 awarded to date, it is certain that a significant number of spring 2007 awards can be claimed for students with FAFSA receipt dates after 4-25-05. As soon as we have fall 2006 disbursement reporting wrapped up, we will be in a position to announce the awarding cutoff date for spring 2007. If you have an outstanding fall 2006 Disbursement Report, please wrap up your disbursement activities and reporting as soon as possible. If you have questions concerning the attached information, please contact our office. <> *********************** Shiela Joyner, Director Oklahoma Tuition Aid Grant Program Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education P. The automated system is designed to make it faster and easier for institutions to receive payments from the National Service Trust. Since financial aid administrators may be directly involved in handling Education Awards redeemed on their campus, we wanted to share the same information with you. Questions or concerns about the online system and EFT process can be directed to epayments@americorps.gov and trustcomm@cns.gov, respectively. Local support is also available from the Oklahoma Community Service Commission at 405-235-7278. I hope this information is helpful to you. Best regards. Angela Angela O. Education Awards can be redeemed within seven years to pay current educational expenses at any Title IV institution, to repay qualified student loans, or to pay expenses incurred while participating in an approved school-to-work program. The amount of the Education Award varies based on the hours of service completed by the recipient. The Corporation for National and Community Service has implemented the new AmeriCorps Online Payment System for the National Service Trust. This automated system allows AmeriCorps members and alumni to create and submit loan forbearance and interest accrual requests, and manage Education Award accounts, completely online. It also allows institutions to receive payments electronically from the National Service Trust. The automated payment process and online portal offer many benefits to your institution, including: * accelerated receipt of payments and compatibility with existing EFT functionality; * reduced administrative burden through auto-populated and system verified information; * electronic records of forms, eliminating the need to scan or copy documents for storage; and * easy access to online assistance. The system is now accepting registrations from financial and educational institutions. To exchange forms and receive payments electronically, your institution must register at http://www.americorps.org/for_organizations/trust/index.asp . The site provides guidelines for assigning user permissions, identifying account(s) to receive disbursements, and implementing administrative procedures, among other operational protocols. Additionally, information about security measures and a helpful Frequently Asked Questions section are available for review at the same URL. This system is intended to expedite and simplify the processing of AmeriCorps paperwork and payments on your campus. Institutional officials can send general questions about the online payment system to epayments@americorps.gov, and specific inquiries about the National Service Trust's EFT process can be directed to trustcomm@cns.gov. Local assistance is also available from the Oklahoma Community Service Commission, the governing agency for state AmeriCorps programs, at 405-235-7278. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
