From mmowdy at ogslp.org Wed Aug 1 13:43:18 2007 From: mmowdy at ogslp.org (Mowdy, Mary) Date: Wed, 01 Aug 2007 13:43:18 -0500 Subject: [Oasfaa] Good News on OFAX!! Message-ID: <76BBB3CD27062D47B827801591653A23082D63@elgar.lan.ogslp.org> Greetings! OSRHE has completed the contract process with the Oregon Student Assistance Commission for Oklahoma financial aid offices to use the Oregon Financial Aid Exchange (OFAX) system. You will recall that OFAX is a simple system designed to facilitate the timely exchange of required information between two institutions when they have a financial aid consortium agreement in place with each other to award financial aid to a student enrolled at both institutions simultaneously. Oklahoma will have its own version of OFAX - there will be no Oregon schools' data in the Oklahoma pipeline. The system is designed so that institutions exchange information on only their "shared" students. Institutions sharing information agree with each other on the frequency of sending updated information on their shared students. For example, TCC and OSU might decide that they want to deposit and/or retrieve information from the OFAX data base on their "shared" students once a day during the peak of the aid packaging season. But another pair of institutions might decide on a different frequency to exchange data on their shared students. There will be no charge to Oklahoma institutions to use the OFAX system. This system is available to private, public, career and career-tech schools. All an institution needs to do to participate is to sign an OFAX agreement with the Oregon Student Aid Commission, to get set up from in IT perspective (which should be simple), and to have a "partner" school, i.e. another school that the institution is sharing dually enrolled students with. Next steps are: 1) Determine which institutions wish to participate. Please reply to this email to let me know if your institution is interested in participating and who your "partner" school(s) are. Institutions will sign an OFAX Agreement with the Oregon Student Assistance Commission (See sample attached below.) 2) OSRHE will facilitate discussion among all participating institutions to determine common field definitions. OSAC/OFAX staff help us do this. All institutions, regardless of who they are exchanging information with, will need to agree on common field definitions. 3) Engage the Oregon Student Aid Commission to provide training if desired to the participating Oklahoma institutions. So - let me know by replying to this email if your institution wants to participate. You can also sign up later, as your needs change or develop. Also let me know if you would like for me to forward to you the power point presentation that we made at the fall 2006 OASFAA conference. And of course, let me know if you have questions! I have heard so much about the e-mails that were sent out by Kristi, that I thought it would be fun to send what we hope is the last update. I was able to start back to work TODAY part-time. I am thrilled to have this part of my life back to "normal" again. I thought this might be a good time to express my gratitude to ALL OF YOU during this past "season" of my life. Thank you for all your prayers, love and support. I feel so overwhelmingly grateful to have been given a second chance at life, and I feel very, very blessed to have such wonderful friends, family and colleagues that supported me through this illness. I received hundreds of cards and e-mails, most made me emotional, some made me laugh, all made me feel very loved. Thank you for taking the time to touch my life, it's hard to express how much they have meant to me. There were many times over the last four months that I would be completely overcome with fear. One day I was reading the Bible and came across Psalms 91, it brought me much such peace and comfort. I read that chapter almost daily, and have not struggled with fear since that time. When you have time, read it in the New Living Translation (my favorite), it's pretty perfect. I have learned alot about faith over the last several months, and will continue to learn about faith through the rest of my life as I continue to strive for "remission" of this illness. This illness has profoundly affected me, I have learned that * I strongly dislike hospitals, but am forever grateful for competent nurses and doctors * I have a new appreciation for the "normal things of life", (i.e. walking, writing, typing, climbing stairs, or simply "going to the bathroom") * TU is an awesome place to work, and I have a wonderful Vice-President and Administration. * I have an awesome staff who picked up the pieces during the worst time of the academic year to be out of the office, thank you for all your concern, loyalty, and hard work! You make me successful in my job! I love you guys and am so thankful we all get to work together! * Cards and emails touched not only me, but my family and staff members at the hospital (literally, everytime I have to go back to the hospital, someone will say, "aren't you that lady on the 14th floor that had her entire room covered in cards, you must have some really neat friends....") I have to agree, I do have some "really neat friends...." * I value and love my husband, children, and Dad more than ever before. When faced with adversity, they were and are such strong individuals. Never take for granted the time that we have to spend with and influence our family, we can never regain that opportunity. * Although I had so many friends and family that helped me during this time, I had several individuals that stretched all boundaries, you know who you are, and I will forever be indebted to you. Thank you and I love you dearly! * God is still in the miracle working business. The doctors say that I am "such a mystery" to them; however, I prefer to think that I am a miracle. I am so grateful for every single prayer. Thank you, thank you, thank you for your love and concern. I am forever grateful for your friendships! Forever grateful, Vicki Hendrickson -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... On another note, we must share with you that Friday, August 3 will be Audrey Freeman's last day of employment with OSRHE. Audrey is leaving us to assume a Spanish teaching position at Mount Saint Mary High School in Oklahoma City. As those who have worked with Audrey know well, her departure is a great loss to our office, and we will sincerely miss her. Some very fortunate students are about to discover what an awesome teacher they have been blessed with! Of great relief to us, our former OTAG colleague Shipra Sinha has been working with Audrey for the past few days, catching up on the changes we have made to the OTAG reporting system over the past couple of years. Shipra has agreed to help us at least while we work to fill the vacant position. Shipra's direct line is 405-225-9360, and her e-mail address is ssinha at otag.org. And last but not least, check out the OTAG section of the OSRHE Financial Aid Resources for Institutions at http://www.okhighered.org/admin-fac/FinAidResources/otag.shtml which includes updated information and documents for use in the administration of the OTAG program during the 2007-2008 award year. Message-ID: Hello Colleagues, I realize everybody is busy, but if you have time to respond to this, I need some assistance. Our housing department previously paid their RA's (Residential Assistants) through payroll which was subject to inclusion as income on the next year's income statement and FAFSA. For 07/08 they decided to pay these same students for the same service, but as a scholarship, therefore my office is counting these dollars as a resource against their federal financial Aid, resulting in many of these students loosing need based aid previously awarded. They would like for me to ignore these dollars (which covers in some cases full room and board expenses). Ofcourse I am standing firm that these dollars must be included as a resource, however they did some research and came up with the following and are using that to indicate we are wrong to include these dollars. Look at slides 62-65 "I will bless the Lord at all times: His praise shall continually be in my mouth." I was told there is a DOE regulation that says the school cannot charge over a certain percentage for a first-time freshman that withdraws. The term I was given is "pro rata", but the only thing I can find is a document on the IFAP website from 96-97. >From what I have found, this regulation has been done away with, but I wanted to run it by you all to see if you have any other information.
