There are two upcoming opportunities for FSA Webinars in September that were
announced recently on IFAP. The link below should take you to the IFAP page
and the Dear Colleague Letters and I have copied their brief summaries
below. There is no charge for the webinars, but you do need to register in
advance. You will be sent a link before the webinar so that you can print
off the Powerpoint and resource materials in advance for use during the
webinar.

I have a new one that I have not dealt with and would appreciate any input. I can't seem to locate it in the regs.
We have a student who was granted asylum in March 2009. He is under the age of 24. His parents are still in his home country, but he was granted asylum here.
I am curious about his dependency status. I am not sure why his parents did not apply for asylum, or if they did and were denied.
Would he be considered independent? He does have contact with his parents in Ethiopia.
Thanks,

Everyone,
I was asked to serve on the NASFAA Technology Initiatives Committee, but have had to decline for this year. NASFAA is looking for someone from the SWASFAA region to take my place. If you've not served on a NASFAA committee before, it's a wonderful experience. There is a fall meeting in Washington DC (NASFAA pays all of your expenses), scheduled for October 3-4. You would fly in on Friday and fly back out Sunday afternoon.
If you'd like more information I would be happy to talk with you or just let me know if you're interested and I'll pass your name on.

Message-ID: <3B3640988539EC47A50B689936AF65C13C5DDA@postman2.osrhe.edu>
This is a reminder that Friday, October 2 is the date by which all
institutions participating in the OTAG program must have submitted their
initial fall semester award claim. As stated in the OTAG Timelines and
Procedures for 2009-2010, the president or chief executive officer at
any institution not meeting the October 2 deadline will be notified.
While October 2 is NOT the final deadline for submitting fall OTAG award
claims, we do request cooperation from all institutions in finalizing
their fall award claims as soon as possible. The timeliness of award
claims submitted by institutions leads to the timeliness of OSRHE being
able to identify funds availability and reevaluate our awarding cutoffs
(currently 1700 EFC and FAFSA receipt date 4/30/09).
If you need a pre-populated OTAG Award Claim Form, please send e-mail
reports at otag.org.
If you need a blank OTAG Award Claim Form template, click here:

We appreciate your assistance in delivering OTAG funds to Oklahoma's
students, and we appreciate your cooperation in finalizing your fall
OTAG award claims and disbursements as expeditiously as possible.

the OTAG award claim process.

Wow, if you have not read Senator Lamar Alexander's comments, you really
need to! Having previously served as Secretary of Education, he has
expertise shared by few others. He does an excellent job of clearly
stating how many, if not most of us feel about nationalizing student
loans.
Have a great day,
