From nvollertsen at uco.edu Fri Dec 10 13:44:41 2010 From: nvollertsen at uco.edu (Nancy Vollertsen) Date: Fri, 10 Dec 2010 13:44:41 -0600 Subject: [Oasfaa] Citizens Caring for Children - It's in the Bag Message-ID: <18B8F2010B91E144BC6EB64508D710130F936A760F@EXCHANGE.uco.local> Merry Christmas everyone! It's hard to believe the holidays are here once again, but with all the rush, stress and commercialism of the season there also comes the joy of sharing and spending time with friends and loved ones. The Spring OASFAA conference is just around the corner, April 13 - 15 in Catoosa, and our service project is once again Citizens Caring for Children. For those of you who are not familiar with this wonderful organization I will share their mission statement: "Citizens Caring for Children breaks the cycle of abuse and neglect for Oklahoma foster children by addressing their material, emotional, intellectual and spiritual needs....because every child deserves the chance for a better life. Through our programs we promote self-worth, self-esteem and develop character to give hope, change lives and create healthy futures." This year they are calling their project "It's in the Bag". It's in the Bag will provide duffle bags to the Oklahoma foster children they serve. These children have been removed from their homes with nothing but the clothing on their backs and do not get the chance to go back to get a change of clothes, a blanket, a favorite toy or stuffed animal, or even a toothbrush. These bags will provide these children with the daily necessities most people take for granted. They are asking for medium sized duffle bags with a zipper filled with the toiletries listed below: Shampoo Soap (Liquid or bar, but if bar please include a soap holder) Brush and comb Fleece blanket Deodorant Toothbrush, toothpaste and floss OASFAA always responds with an incredible outpouring of love and support, but we also want to make it fun. So, as we've done in the past, we're going to have a contest to see who can collect the most items. We will divide into four teams and the winner (or loser) will get to do something entertaining for the rest of us! Teams, team leaders, and contest rules will be announced soon. In the meantime while you're finishing up your Christmas shopping (or just getting started) be on the lookout for some of these items on sale and go ahead and pick them up. Mendy has already found some light weight canvas bags at Target that are 20" and 24", fold in on themselves, have a toiletry bag and are $10 and $15. They sound perfect! The Spring OASFAA conference is shaping up to be a great one and the opportunity for us to help the less fortunate will make it even better! ONLY SPRING SEMESTER FUNDS CAN BE CLAIMED using this extended cutoff. Pre-populated Award Claim Forms generated by OTAG for Spring 2011 will include: * students who were awarded and disbursed in Fall 2010 * students who were awarded and subsequently cancelled in Fall 2010, unless they were cancelled due to a change in EFC greater than 1700 * students with award potential who were not awarded in fall but could be awarded in spring -- this group includes students with FAFSA receipt dates from 1-1-10 through 4/13/10 and EFCs of 1700 or lower. Students included in an Excel pre-populated Award Claim Form for spring will be sorted in the following order: * Awarded * Cancelled * Pending On the Excel spreadsheet Award Claim Form this status will be displayed in Column J. On the FTP Award Claim Form the status will be displayed in Field #11, Position 71. As in fall Award Claim Form reporting, institutions using the pre-populated will need to delete information for students who should not be paid in spring (even if they were paid in fall) and edit the information as appropriate (FT/PT, overawards, etc.) for the students to be paid in spring. More detailed instructions will accompany the spring pre-populated or blank template reports. If you would like to receive a "work copy" pre-populated Award Claim Form to assist you in identifying additional students who can be awarded in spring, please send a request to reports at otag.org. Please contact our office at 405.225.9456 or toll free 800.858.1840 or send e-mail to reports at otag.org if you have questions or require more information regarding spring OTAG awarding and disbursement processes. We currently provide for our Honors program Full tuition, fees, room, books, and $1000 for food, but we capture all out-side aid, (Federal, state, private, and institutional) and reduce the Honors awards by that amount so the student does not get, "walking around" money. I would like to know what other institution are doing? Please let me know as soon as you can.
