From bfair at osrhe.edu Mon Jun 4 11:16:46 2012 From: bfair at osrhe.edu (Fair, Bryce) Date: Mon, 04 Jun 2012 11:16:46 -0500 Subject: [Oasfaa] State Legislative Update for May 28 - June 1 Message-ID: <3B3640988539EC47A50B689936AF65C17D86CC@postman2.osrhe.edu> Below is the state legislative update for May 28 - June 1. As you will notice, a few bills that were passed in the last week of the session are still pending consideration by the Governor. The Governor has 15 days from the end of the session to act on these bills (June 9). Of special note are the first two bills on the list below-SB 1975 making appropriations to Higher Education and SB 1969 providing for the transfer of funds to the Endowed Chairs program of the state system of higher education. State funding allocations for most of our existing state financial aid programs for FY2013 remained flat. However, the State Regents provided a modest increase to three programs to address current funding issues: * Oklahoma Tuition Aid Grant (OTAG) - $400,000 or 3.2% increase to help partially offset the elimination of federal LEAP/SLEAP matching funds in 2011-12. * Concurrent Enrollment Tuition Waiver reimbursement (for state system institutions only) - $198,377 or 9.1% increase to help reimburse more of the institutions' growing cost of the waivers. * Academic Scholars Program - $200,000 or 3.5% increase to help address annual funding shortfalls that have been depleting the program's trust fund. Bryce Fair The update below reflects the current status of major legislation concerning Higher Education during the week of May 28, 2012 -June 1, 2012. (Previously, we could bypass it and everything was ok, but today, no.) So, I dutifully called the SAIG help desk and the convo went something like this... Me: We are unable to access your sites because it is requiring token info. However, we haven't received those tokens. SAIG help person (Jamie): Yes, we are aware some schools are having this issue, and we are in contact with ??(people who issue the tokens) to determine how to fix it. Me: So, you can't let me access the sites? Jamie: No ma'am, but you can call us to find out the status of the research at any time. You may also call NSLDShelpline, edconnect helpline, etc for information. (she gets my hopes up) Me: So, can they get me into the sites?? Jamie: No, but they can update you on the research. (ARGHH!) Me: So, basically, we cannot work until you determine a fix? Does that mean we should just go home? Jamie: I'm sorry but I can't tell you that. (Jamie has no apparent sense of humor.) Me: Ok. What is my ticket #? Jamie: You don't have a ticket # but the next time you call, that person can give you a #. (What??) Me: Can someone contact me when it is fixed? Jamie: No, you will need to call back. Me: What is your name? Jamie: Jamie, what number can you be reached? Me: 405.878.2178 Jamie: Someone will call you as soon as it is resolved. Me: Thanks??? (one minute before, they couldn't call me back...???) So, all that to say, if you are this similar issue, too stinkin' bad! You can laugh or you can cry but you can't communicate with the government or import ISIRs, transmit files or really much of anything at all to do with federal aid.
