POSITION TITLE:              Counselor for Financial Aid

EFFECTIVE DATE:             May 23, 2012

DEPARTMENT:                 Financial Aid


ESSENTIAL FUNCTION:  The Counselor for Financial Aid works under the general supervision of the Director for Financial Aid and is responsible for advising students and parents regarding the financial aid process, evaluating the financial need of students and families, and awarding financial aid according to government and institutional regulations and guidelines.
RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:
*       Counsel and advise students and parents regarding federal student aid eligibility, application processes, federal student aid programs, cost of attendance, student loan indebtedness, and individualizes information based on the individual student situation.
*       Collects and analyzes student financial data to complete the verification process as required to determine federal student aid eligibility in accordance with federal, state and institutional guidelines.

*       Utilizes and updates the POISE database to process federal student aid applications and formulates appropriate financial aid packages for students.

*       Responsible for managing and/or assisting with the management of one or more specific Title IV program(s) or processes such as: Federal Work Study, Federal Direct Loans, Return to Title IV Fund processing, etc.

*       Reviews student  academic performance to determine whether satisfactory academic progress is being met in order to remain eligible for federal student aid.
*       Maintains a presence at the reception desk in the absence of the Financial Aid Assistant and/or Student Assistant.

*       Assists in organizing and presenting student financial aid information for students and parents at area high schools, job fairs, enrollment sessions and within the community.
*       Serves as part of the Enrollment Management Team.
*       Performs other duties as assigned

INSTITUTIONAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

*        Institutional Service

o   Understand and promote the mission statement of Redlands Community College.

o   Participate with the entire staff to perpetuate the goals and ideals of Redlands Community College.

o   Reinforce the value of service to others and strengthen ethical development and civic engagement.

o   Cooperate in the promotion of "students first" by supporting and encouraging the use of superior customer service skills and a "how may I help you" attitude.

o   Serve on institutional committees on assignment.

o   Ensure, with the coordination of the position supervisor, that the services to be provided as a consultant or contract service to another agency do not interfere with or conflict with the hours, duties or responsibilities of this position.

*       Professional Development

o   Attend scheduled in-service activities and meetings.

o   Attend seminars and workshops in areas pertaining to professional position responsibilities.

o   Participate in professional development programs to enhance knowledge in professional field.

*       Community Service

o   Represent Redlands Community College within the community and/or business sector in a manner which enhances the image of the College.

*       Other Duties

o   Other duties as assigned.

REPORTS TO:    Director for Financial Aid

SUPERVISES:   Student workers as applicable

QUALIFICATIONS:
MANDATORY:  Minimum qualifications include an Associate's degree, plus two years professional work experience in financial aid or higher education. Other job related education and/or professional work experience may be substituted for part of these basic requirements.  Applicant must have excellent customer service skills, oral and written communication skills, organizational and presentation skills, and be proficient in technical skills and abilities. Must have a high degree of accuracy when working with detailed information.

OPTIONAL: Bachelor's degree preferred. Working knowledge of the POISE data system a plus.  Community college experience is preferred.
