URL: From imagee at osrhe.edu Wed Sep 25 16:12:37 2013 From: imagee at osrhe.edu (Magee, Irala) Date: Wed, 25 Sep 2013 21:12:37 +0000 Subject: [Oasfaa] Oklahoma's Promise Cumulative GPA Correction/Clarification Message-ID: As many of you are in the process of planning for one of the major changes to the eligibility requirements for Oklahoma's Promise, I wanted to issue a correction/clarification of how the GPA should be calculated at the 60 hours earned check point, at the 90 hours earned check point and beyond. First I need to correct something I said at the Access 360 Conference yesterday during a presentation on Oklahoma's Promise Update for Financial Aid Administrators. For state system institutions, the cumulative GPA to be checked at the 60 hours earned point CAN be the one your school maintains according to Regent's policy: The CGPA includes grades for all course work, including activity courses and forgiven course work. The use of the CGPA on the transcript is optional, but it may be used to determine financial aid eligibility, admission to graduate or professional programs, or for graduation honors. It does not have to include remedial coursework. (This is the part I got wrong at the meeting.) If students do not meet the requirement to have at least a 2.00 CGPA at the 60 hours earned check point, we ask that you report these to the Oklahoma's Promise office. They will be permanently removed from the Oklahoma's Promise eligibility list. The GPA that needs to be monitored at the 90 hours earned check point is to include all grades for all course work taken after the 60 hours earned check point. I think this is pretty well explained in the Oklahoma's Promise handbook at: http://www.okhighered.org/okpromise/fao-handbook.pdf Unfortunately, this is a unique GPA and will probably need to be set up in your system or hand calculated. The students that do not have at least a 2.50 GPA at the 90 hours earned check point (based on all hours taken after the 60 hours earned check point), should be removed from the claim but should be monitored for compliance after each semester thereafter. Failure to meet this requirement does not permanently disqualify the student; however, they must regain a 2.50 GPA (based on all hours taken after the 60 hours earned check point) to again be eligible. As I stated in the meeting, I apologize for the complexity of these GPA requirements and also for any additional confusion my error may have caused. Hopefully, the first GPA requirement will be somewhat easy to check if your school maintains a cumulative GPA per Regent's policy. Also, please remember that these requirements are applicable only to students beginning college in the fall of 2012 and thereafter. The high school graduation year is on the eligibility report for your use in determining which students should be checked for compliance with these new standards. These requirements are separate and "in addition" to the satisfactory academic progress requirements of all Oklahoma's Promise recipients. Irala K. While October 1st is NOT the final deadline for submitting fall OTAG award claims, we do request cooperation from all institutions in finalizing their fall award claims as soon as possible. The timeliness of award claims submitted by institutions leads to the timeliness of OSRHE being able to identify funds availability for spring semester awards and to announce any change in the spring awarding cutoffs (currently 3/20/2013 FAFSA receipt date and 1700 EFC). If you need a pre-populated OTAG Award Claim Form, please send e-mail to . If you need a blank OTAG Award Claim Form template, you can go to http://www.okhighered.org/admin-fac/FinAidResources/otag.shtml to retrieve one. We appreciate your assistance in delivering OTAG funds to Oklahoma's students, and we appreciate your cooperation in finalizing your fall OTAG award claims and disbursements as expeditiously as possible. Please contact our office if you have questions or need assistance with the OTAG award claim process. Irala K.
