Hopefully things have settled down now that the FISAP deadline is past. In the past few weeks, the registration numbers for the SWASFAA boot camp, leadership workshop, and conference have been steadily climbing. Several people have contacted us because they were not able to reserve a room at the conference hotel, so we have renegotiated our room capacity with the hotel several times. However, the hotel has now completely sold out of rooms on Thursday night, and only a few rooms are left for the rest of the week. To help us accommodate everyone, we are considering the possibility of an overflow hotel. But before we sign a contract with another hotel, we want to make sure we ask for the right number of rooms. If you have not booked your room for the SWASFAA boot camp, leadership workshop, or conference, please email Audra Main at audra-main at ouhsc.edu as soon as possible to let her know how many nights you still need. If you have booked additional rooms at Harrah's and need to cancel those rooms, please do so as soon as possible so other people will be able to make their reservations. I'm very excited about the enthusiasm for our upcoming events, and I don't want the limited number of hotel rooms to discourage anyone from registering for boot camp, the leadership workshop, or the conference. I am confident we will be able to work out something with one of the nearby hotels. If you haven't registered for the events, please visit http://swasfaa.org/docs/conferences/site/index.html for more information. (HSC) Subject: [SWASFAA Team Chatter] Registration closes soon for Leadership Workshop! SWASFAA Team Chatter has posted a new item, 'Registration closes soon for Leadership Workshop!' Ah, fall is finally in the air!? Here in Oklahoma, I was beginning to think that the summer temperatures were never going to end.? Now that we?ve reached the mid-point of October, that means the SWASFAA Conference, Boot Camp, and the Leadership Workshop are so very close.? Two and one-half weeks away kind of close, in fact!? I don?t know about you, but I?m so looking forward to New Orleans?all the food, the culture, the music, and just as importantly, the learning, the networking, and the camaraderie that comes with spending several days with colleagues. Registration for the Leadership Workshop closes on October 24th and we only have a few spots left, so you want to make sure you don?t miss out on this fantastic opportunity.? We are intentionally limiting registration to encourage as much dialogue and relationship building as we can squeeze into our relatively short timeframe. For only $75, on Wednesday, November 5th, from 7:30-12:00, the Leadership Development Committee is going to facilitate an agenda that should leave you feeling enlightened, empowered, and excited about your leadership abilities. We?re going to start with a hot breakfast, and then move quickly into the agenda.? Participants will have received the True Colors personality assessment prior to arrival at the Workshop, so we will be able to dive right into what those colors mean for each of us, how that affects the way we interact with those around us, what we can do to utilize all of our colors, and as leaders, how we can help others turn up the volume on all their colors as well. Next, once everyone has a better understanding of their colors and what they mean, the Committee is going to lead participants through an hour of ?Making It Real.?? What we will spend our time on will be the most important topics of leadership, like collaboration within the aid office and with others on campus, building your office into a cohesive team, creating a vision for your office that everyone can work to support, and many others, and how you take your newfound knowledge of your colors and apply that to the essential leadership areas we discuss. Have you ever wanted to ask a particular question about how SWASFAA and NASFAA work?? Or how you can get involved?? This is your chance!? During the final hour, the participants will have the opportunity to spend some one-on-one time with SWASFAA Board members and Committee chairs, NASFAA President Justin Draeger, and NASFAA National Chair Eileen O?Leary.? Finally, we?ll do what we?re calling a ?blended? activity, which means everyone will get engaged in finding out about volunteer opportunities that can serve to highlight a person?s more dominate color(s), or can brighten a non-dominate color. Time is running out, so if you?re already registered for the conference, go back and modify your registration to include the Leadership Workshop.? If you aren?t registered at all, then what are you waiting for?? There is no late registration like there is for the conference.? Registration closes on the 24th, period, so get in before all our spots fill up! I look forward to seeing you soon! The tax return, however, is just Mom and she filed Head of Household. Normally, we'd tell her she has to refile with dad or file Married Filing Separate and then give us Dad's tax return as well. However.... The wrinkle is that Dad was not "legal" according to mom so she couldn't file with him. If I remember correctly, if she files "Married Filing Separately" she'd have to list him and his SSN on the tax return, so that may not have been an option for her either. She states that he is legal now, so should we have her file an amended return with him (either joint or separate)? Take the Head of household return and list dad in the family and list his income as "untaxed?" What would you do? What Should we do? It's days like this that make me realize I really don't know anything at all about financial aid. :) Thanks in advance for your input, Jonna -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Today's NASFAA News answered the question in its "NASSFAA Submits Comments on 2015-2016 Draft FAFSA" article: "NASFAA encourages the Department of Education (ED) to exercise its authority to use prior-prior-year (PPY) income data within the next few years, and to work with the IRS to enhance the data retrieval tool (DRT) and improve its efficiency." As we discussed at the training, the idea of prior-prior year has been around for a long time, but it appears to still be on the political radar at the moment. Happy Halloween! The dates this year are April 8-10 and it will be held at the Hard Rock in Tulsa. Alicia Smith and I are co-chairs for the Program Committee and we are starting to brainstorm ideas for breakout sessions. We are open to any and all suggestions! I know there are also several other conferences coming up in the next couple of months that many of our members will be attending and we'd be interested In hearing about topics or updates they offer that you think might be beneficial to our group. We are not too proud to copy other people's ideas! Please contact Alicia, me, or any of the other board members with your ideas. Have a great weekend!
