(HSC) Subject: [SWASFAA Team Chatter] Happy Fourth of July! SWASFAA Team Chatter has posted a new item, 'Happy Fourth of July!' I know everyone is gearing up for the Independence Day weekend, so I?ll make this short. We have lots of great stuff coming up in the near future. Here?s the lowdown: First, we have a webinar scheduled for 10 a.m. CST on Wednesday, July 8. Once again, this webinar is free to all SWASFAA members. The discussion will focus on unusual enrollment situations, dependency overrides, and other dependency issues. To register, email your name and institution to Denise Welch at dwelch at panola.edu. It doesn?t get much simpler than that ? until we start talking about dependency issues, at which point everything could get VERY complicated. I?m confident our panelists will help take the mystery out of it, though, so I hope you'll take advantage of this training event. Next, we are about to go live with the registration for the annual conference, boot camp, and the leadership workshop. I can?t wait to start inundating everyone with information. Our local arrangements chair, Joni Beader, has some exciting activities scheduled for the week, and you?re not going to want to miss out.?Last year everyone was pumped about going to New Orleans, and Albuquerque is going to be just as much fun. The Sandia Resort and Casino is surrounded by the beautiful Sandia mountains.? It's so pretty there that you might not want to leave. When I visited the area for the NMASFAA Conference last April, I explored the city and took some photographs of the amazing scenery. Check them out on the Facebook page for the Southwest Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators. Some of the pictures turned out so well that I ordered them on canvases (thank you, Groupon!).? This one is my favorite (see below).?I ordered this picture on a 40? x 30? canvas, and I plan to hang it in my home. That?s how much I loved Albuquerque. I?ve traveled all over the world, but the best sunsets, hands-down, are in New Mexico. After a long day of training, we all need to experience a little serenity. I already feel calmer (and if you know me, then that?s saying a lot). Finally, we have an election coming up soon. We?ll be voting on a president-elect, secretary, and delegates for Oklahoma and Texas. I can?t believe it?s already time to vote for the 2016 officers. I feel like it should still be 1995. I must be getting old. But some of you are a lot older than I am, which makes me feel better. I want to wish everyone has a wonderful Fourth of July. If you?re traveling somewhere, then I hope you have a safe trip. Have fun with your friends and family. Eat lots of food. Drink a lot of ? water (it?s hot out there!). And remember, when you watch the fireworks, multiply the image by ten, and that will give you an idea of how colorful the sunsets in New Mexico are. [I believe the woman in the photo identified as Melanie Wilkins is the owner of the Wilkins Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in Duncan where the father of the family, Dennis Stanley, is cared for.] Bryce Fair Duncan couple inspires law to increase scholarships eligibility By Rachel Snyder The Duncan Banner | Posted: Friday, July 10, 2015 6:45 am [http://bloximages.chicago2.vip.townnews.com/duncanbanner.com/content/tncms/assets/v3/editorial/7/05/70571420-26b5-11e5-8c6b-470df91b380d/559f3fefcdcce.image.jpg?resize=608%2C760] OHLAP Pic Gov. Mary Fallin held a ceremonial signing of SB 137 recently and was joined by the bill's author, Sen. Corey Brooks (R-Washington), as well as Dillon, Dustin and Dana Stanley, Melanie Wilkins and Kermit R. McMurry, Ph.D. Vice Chancellor of Student Services Oklahoma Regents for Higher Education. A Duncan couple whose son was denied access to the Oklahoma Higher Learning Access Program because they received social security disability payments prompted a new law that could allow more students to attend college. The program provides awards equivalent to all or part of college tuition expenses for students who complete the program's requirements while in high school. There are currently more than 18,000 students in Oklahoma receiving the OHLAP scholarship. Senate Bill 137 allows the State Regents to review cases in which a family's income includes non-taxable military benefits or federal Social Security payments because of the death or disability of a parent. The issue was brought to light by Dennis and Dana Stanley, whose oldest son, Dillon, was denied access to the program in 2011 because of Dennis' social security disability payments. Dennis was diagnosed with a brain tumor in 2005, which left him unable to take care of himself. Because of treatments for the brain tumor, including surgeries, radiation and chemotherapy, he's in a nursing home and requires care around the clock. Dennis' social security disability payments put the family over the $50,000 annual family income eligibility level when Dillon applied for the OHLAP scholarship. Dennis and Dana's youngest son, Dustin, who will graduate from high school in 2018, will apply for the scholarship this fall. "We are extremely excited that Senate Bill 137 was approved and signed into law this year. We're very thankful for Senator Brook's dedication and hard work in addressing this oversight and for Governor Fallin signing the bill," Dana said. "This will help our family tremendously and I know that there are many other families that will benefit from this as well. It's an incredible gift and we are beyond grateful." Prior to the passage of SB 137, a student's family income, both taxable and nontaxable, could not exceed $50,000 per year. The bill, authored by Sen. Corey Brooks, R-Washington, allows the Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education to review cases involving special financial situations, such as nontaxable military and Social Security payments. If the family's income is less than $50,000, excluding those benefits, the student will be eligible for the OHLAP program. "This program was created to ensure that all Oklahoma students who are serious about pursuing higher education get that opportunity if they meet certain financial and academic requirements. Unfortunately, their oldest wasn't able to qualify and has had to go well above and beyond the effort common to the vast majority of students in order to pay for his college education, but because of his parents' determination, his brother can apply for the scholarship," Brooks said. "I'm pleased that the legislature took swift action in passing this legislation and grateful for Governor Fallin's support as well, so that we could fulfill the state's promise to help more Oklahoma students get their education and pursue their dreams." Maybe it will give you a smile during this Fall Registration time. Enjoy! - Scott "6 Tips on How to Have a TERRIBLE FAFSA Experience" By Jesse Hausler, Texarkana College Everyone knows that having money to pay for school is one of the more important parts of enrolling in college, but it can be can be a complicated process. That process got a lot more complicated this May with the introduction of the FSA ID, a new "username and password" system the government is usin g to replace the old FAFSA PIN number. All students filling out a FAFSA are now required to have an FSA ID, and if you pay attention and read carefully, it can be a very painless setup. How ever, some intrepid souls may not like "easy." You may not like "painless." You may actually enjoy financial-aid-related suffering! If you're someone who loves to do everything the hard way and enjoys jumpin g obstacles, we have six easy tips to turn your FAFSA application experienc= e into an ongoing train wreck. *** 1. Rush through your FSA ID Setup Filling out applications is boring, and you're a great typist. You just want to get this over with so you can grab a burger. So by all means, rush, rush, rush! You have many more important things to do than securing up to $5,700 of free money to further your education. By all means, skim over questions without reading carefully and type as fast as your fingers can move. Don't bother to double-check what you typed, either... This isn't English or math class! 2. On the FSA ID, use an email you can't get into. Haven't logged in to that old email account you set up in high school for three years? Well, it obviously needs some exercise. Who cares if you have no idea what the password is and the data plan on your phone has run out? It's not like you'll need to log in or anything... Wait. You mean the FSA ID won't be usable until you retrieve a number sent to that email account? Uh oh... 3. Don't write down your FSA user ID or password. Capital letters, lower case letters, numbers, special characters... No problem! You're just using a password similar to the one you have for everything else, right? I'm sure you'll remember the exact username and password a year from now just as well as you remember what you had for lunch two days ago. ... What was that again? 4. Make up security questions that won't make sense a year from now. The goal of security questions is to help you log in later on (a week later, a year later, etc.) if you don't remember your username and password. If you enjoy guessing, live in the moment! Make your security question "What's my favorite TV show?" or better yet, "What is my age?" Lord knows that won't change from year to year. 5. Let your parents or a friend do it all for you. Computers may not be your thing, or financial aid may bore you. You should probably just let your parents or your friend fill the whole thing out for you. It's not like they might accidentally put down their social security number where yours should go. Ditto for the security questions, mailing address, email address... And even if they're careful, it's your college business, but do you really need to know it? 6. If you get stuck or confused, don't stop and ask for help-just keep going! Sure, the Texarkana College Financial Aid Office is staffed with experts in this stuff who would love to help you get it right the first time. Yes, you can work on it together on the computers five feet from their office. But where's the challenge in that? Financial Aid is like fishing twine. The more tangled it gets, the more fun you'll have unwinding it later. *** There you have it - a perfect guide to giving yourself migraines when setting up the FSA ID! However, if you really want to be boring about it and have a FSA ID and FAFSA experience that's simple, easy, and straightforward, it isn't hard. Read carefully. Check your answers. Use an email that works. Ask questions. The TC Financial Aid Office would love to help. When I asked for documentation I got credit card bills (mostly retail store cards) and a statement for a $600 dollar monthly truck payment. The connecting thread, how a student or family chooses to spend their resources is up to them. She states they "got kicked out of their house and now live in a travel trailer in a trailer park." Based on that information, I would normally be inclined to accept her explanation and agree with her. HOWEVER, the family income is $70,000 and she states there has been no change to that income. Our reasoning is that the family would not qualify for any public assistance with that income. She further states that there is no third party to confirm her story because it occurred after the student graduated and they did not utilize a shelter, etc. She is quoting the McKinney-Vento act and believes she qualifies based on that act. I think she may be a little full of bologna, but I'd like your opinion as to what you would do in this situation. We do however have GPA criteria set for institutional aid such as athletic scholarships. Hope this helps!
