The SWASFAA Board recently made a policy change and we will now allow non-SWASFAA members to attend Boot Camp, http://www.swasfaa.org/docs/conferences/site/bootcamp.html. However, we have been experiencing some logistical challenges, so we need registration to occur in a manual fashion. If you are interested in attending Boot Camp in Oklahoma City, November 7th, 8th, and 9th, for $375, you'll need to act fast. This 2 1/2 day intense training will present to you a full agenda for the breadth you need as an aid administrator, including 11 topics that give you an opportunity to test for NASFAA credentials. We structure the training to allow time for best practices discussions and interactive conversations, so whether you are new to financial aid or are a veteran in need of a refresher, you will leave with extremely valuable materials and knowledge. The deadline to secure the room rate of $139 is Friday, October 7, so check http://www.swasfaa.org/docs/conferences/site/hotel.html. If you want to register, please contact me directly via email, mendy-schmerer at ouhsc.edu. Should you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask! Thank you, Mendy Schmerer, M. Ed. If you or someone you know has retired in the past year or plans to retire in the current year, please let me know (so I can be jealous of you). Also, don't forget to register for the conference, boot camp, and/or the mid-level workshop. There are lots of options for quality training at these events. And here's a bonus: You have lots of opportunities for getting NASFAA credentials if you attend boot camp or mid-level training. NASFAA has revamped their CORE training materials, and everyone who attends boot camp and mid-level training will get a free study guide for the subjects that are eligible for NASFAA credential tests. You'll also get a free voucher that qualifies you for two attempts at taking the credential exams in each of the eligible subjects. The study guides and credential exams are normally $99 apiece (so $198 per subject), so you can save a lot of money by taking the training through SWASFAA. I have to say--these new study guides are remarkably thorough. You'll be amazed at what you can learn. I hope to see you next month! The conference committee has put a lot of work into preparing a robust agenda for us, and I'm confident that everyone who attends will find it to be a rewarding experience. Each year SWASFAA recognizes its members who are retiring from the financial aid profession. The person must have served the most recent fifteen years as a member of a financial aid office or in a position eligible to serve as a representative of a member institution in SWASFAA. The retirement must have occurred during the preceding year or be planned for the current year. If you or someone you know qualifies for the retirement recognition award, please email me the retiree's name and school so I can acknowledge his or her service at the conference in November. Don't forget to register for the upcoming SWASFAA events by October 28th. For more information about registering for the conference, boot camp, or the mid-level workshop, click on http://www.swasfaa.org/docs/conferences/site/index.html. We don't get a lot of chances to come together with our colleagues, the U.S. Department of Education, and NASFAA all at the same time, so don't miss this opportunity! I hope the beginning of October is treating you well. Has anyone?s office slowed down yet? I would assume not with PPY and the FAFSA opening on October 1st, but this opportunity allows us to help students take the steps in attaining their college dreams for an extended period of time. I love serving students and parents. Knowing you make a difference in the lives of others is such a wonderful gift we are given in our profession. In order to be able to fully and efficiently serve students, it is crucial to have the knowledgebase in your field of expertise. If you need to build or refresh your financial aid knowledge, we have just the place for you! Boot Camp will allow you to build your financial aid knowledge one brick at a time. Boot Camp will be a jam-packed two and a half days, but you will walk away with invaluable information, connections from all over our region, and the opportunity to test for NASFAA Credentials (11 topics to be exact). Message-ID: Happy Fall Everyone! Some of you may be wondering when decentralized training will be. The board has decided to have the training in February or early March. The determining factors that brought us to that decision are: 1. The training materials were received on Oct 8th so a training in October was both a short window for the trainer to prepare as well as short notice to schools. Karli, Training Chair, was diligent in requesting the info but it was not sent to us until that day. 2. With PPY, most board members felt that we are busier than usual this fall so schools may not attend or would send fewer people. 3. After October, the SWASFAA boot camp, SWASFAA conference and FSA along w/ Thanksgiving and Christmas make Nov and Dec pretty packed. So, our plan is to have the training in February or early March and our Support Staff training will be in the opposite month. Then, the OASFAA conference will be in late April. While we realize this may not be ideal for some, we felt it was the best option for this year. If you have suggestions or ideas about timing of the events, please feel free to contact one of the Delegates at Large, Teri Cochran or Caryn Pacheco so that they can bring that information to the next board meeting. Teri may be reached at cochrant at nsuok.edu and Caryn may be reached at cpacheco at ou.edu. Upon payment of annual dues, institutional members will be considered a member in good standing and will be allowed one voting representative. The voting representative, as well as other financial aid professionals from the member institution, will be entitled to attend the association meetings at the member rate, to hold office, and to serve on the committees. Decentralized training and Support Staff training are offered at no cost to schools with a paid membership. This is a great deal for institutions by providing free training opportunities. Please check the OASFAA website to verify whether your membership is active. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact myself or Alicia Smith.
