Earlier today, the Oklahoma Senate gave final approval to SB 529 by a vote of 42 yes, 0 no. The bill will likely be forwarded to the Governor's office by tomorrow, May 10. The Governor will then have 5 days (excluding Sundays) to act on the bill. Following are the potential outcomes:

* The Governor can sign the bill and the bill would become law.

* If the Governor does not take any action on the bill during the 5-day period, the bill would become law without the Governor's signature.

* The Governor can veto the bill and send it back to the Legislature with her message on the reasons for the veto. If vetoed, the Legislature could consider the possibility of a veto override. Normally, a veto override would require a 2/3's vote by both the Senate and House. However, bills with an emergency clause (which SB 529 has) require a veto override vote of 3/4's. A veto override on SB 529 would require yes votes by 36 out of 48 Senators and 76 out of 101 House members.
