I want to take a minute to thank everyone who responded to my last email and volunteered to help out on one of the various committees. We can always use more people. More people, more ideas. I have listed a description of the committee's below. Please contact me if you are interested in serving on any of the three committees. Remember your colleagues are here if you have questions, concerns and comments, feel free to reach out on the list serve. Speaking of the list serve, it is a great place to post job opportunities, retirements, promotions and other relevant information. Besides looking for people to help the chairs on the committees below, we are looking for a couple of volunteers to help with site selection. The duties listed below are for the chairs of the committees, however I believe they are a great description of what assistance is needed as well. Program Chair duties Form a committee to create the program agenda for the conference and have meetings as needed. Work closely with the Conference Chair to meet necessary deadlines. Attend the Board meetings and discuss the tentative agenda and seek guidance from the Board as necessary. Find presenters and moderators for each of the sessions. Send letters to each of the presenters and moderators informing them of the date, time, and place of their sessions as well as request any audio/visual needs. Work closely with the hotel on the audio/visual requirements. During the conference and prior to sessions, monitor meeting room conditions, room temperature, A/V equipment placement, and adequate seating. Arrange hotel accommodations and travel for guest speakers or presenters as appropriate. Work closely with the President and Conference Committee to determine a keynote speaker. Write thank you notes to presenters/moderators/committee members as appropriate. Local Arrangements Chair duties Form a committee to create the menu and decorations for the conference and have committee meetings as needed. Work closely with the Treasurer and Conference Chair to determine the headcounts that will be given to the hotel by their required deadline(s). During the conference, communicate with the hotel contact if there are any problems with the meal or break set-up. Responsible for getting the tables decorated in time for the meal functions. Help with the Service Project as directed by the Conference Chair. Attend the Board meetings to provide update on local arrangements. Attend the hotel exit interview if one is conducted. Entertainment Chair duties Form a committee if necessary and have committee meetings as needed. Work with Conference Committee and President to create an entertainment venue or idea that corresponds with the theme of the conference. Responsible for securing the entertainment and requesting any deposits necessary from the Treasurer. Attend the Board meetings and provide update on entertainment. Communicate any special needs such as A/V or stage as soon as possible to the Conference Chair so that it can be requested from the hotel. Should you have any suggestions, questions or concerns you would like to make the board aware of please contact one of the Delegate at Large, Ashlee Sneary, asneary at nwtech.edu or Lori Deardorff, ldeardorff at snu.edu. I noticed that the Dept has posted the following: *Yesterday, August 14, 2018, the Department published in the Federal Register a notice of proposed rulemaking to rescind the gainful employment (GE) regulations, which added subpart Q of the Student Assistance General Provisions for programs that prepare students for gainful employment in a recognized occupation.* *The Department also announces plans to update the College Scorecard, or a similar web-based tool, to provide program-level outcomes for all higher education programs, at all institutions that participate in the programs authorized by title IV of the Higher Education Act of 1965, as amended, which would improve transparency and inform student enrollment decisions through a market-based accountability system.* *The public will have 30 days, until September 13, 2018 at 11:59 EDT, to provide comments through www.regulations.gov .* I don't ever remember writing in support of a proposal but I did this morning. This is a big burden on smaller schools with low numbers. It is so time consuming and every year I have to pull out all my notes and relearn what I'm suppose to do. Even then, I am not confident I am doing everything correctly. I assumed everyone would be glad for GE reporting to go away but I looked at some of the comments being submitted and there are some students (I assume) who are writing because they are upset at some schools that they feel mislead them. I understand their concern but I do hope the Department can address this another way. If you support this proposal, please take a few minutes and send in a comment. Unless things have changed in Band classes since I was in high school, most students had to pay for their own instruments anyway unless they played a harp, a string bass, or a low brass instrument (Euphonium, Tuba, etc) I had to buy my own trombone in fifth grade. I would count Drivers Ed curriculum and fuel (not the car) because those expenses are usually covered by the school. At least where I come from in Kansas. Grad expenses - usually, no. Many schools where I am from have fees for graduation. Dance and Band expenses - that is a hard one. Most were covered by the school when I was in school and so I could see where it could be a legit extra expense for a homeschool family. My general thought as I worked with these and trained others in homeschool financial aid in Kansas and RMASFAA was to try to figure out if the expense would have been a expense the family would have had in public or private school. If the family would have had to pay for the item or activity anyway, I would say no; but if it was something that would be covered by the school if they attended a traditional school, then I tended to say yes. Also, if the dance or music was included as a class with a grade on their HS transcript, I would be more likely to accept (with consideration to the first sentence in the paragraph). I used this more as a rule of thumb than a hard and fast absolute rule, but that thinking generally help you come to a decision. Hopefully this long, drawn out, and rambling reply helps.
