Director / Senior Director of Student Financial Services

Position Summary: The Director of Student Financial Services is responsible for the management and administration of the university's financial aid programs and student financial services.  The Director provides strategic and departmental leadership for student financial services functions including Financial Aid, Bursar, Collections and Student Employment.  Reporting directly to the Vice President of Enrollment Management and University Communications, the Director serves a key role in developing and supporting the university's financial aid philosophy and strategy to shape a high-quality student body.  The Director serves as the steward for the university's compliance with all relevant financial aid laws and regulations.

The tentative start date for this position is November 5, 2018.

Education/Experience:

A Bachelor's degree is required.  A Master's degree is preferred.

A minimum of five (5) years of experience in higher education in positions with increasing responsibility including staff supervision in the areas of Financial Aid, Student Accounts, Bursar or Student Financial Services office is required.

A suitable combination of education and experience may be substituted for minimum qualifications.

Essential Functions:


*         Demonstrate an attitude and behaviors that reflect the mission and values of the university and the department.

*         Operational Oversight

o    Plan, develop, implement, and administer the university's financial aid programs and student financial services.

o    Ensure the university's compliance with all applicable financial aid laws, regulations, and best practices.

o    Ensure the department's adherence to industry and university best practices regarding Bursar services comprising cashiering, disbursements and student account collections.

o    Serve as principal adviser to all administrators, faculty and students regarding the financial aid and student financial services processes and programs.

o    Promote the utilization of campus based and non-campus based financial aid programs.

o    Coordinate the development of Student Financial Services (SFS) internal and external communications materials.

o    Ensure satisfactory SFS participation in internal and external audits.

o    Oversee the preparation and completion of financial aid annual reports to include, but not limited to ABA, Common date set, IPEDS and NAIA.

o    Attend recruiting trips with admissions and conduct high school financial aid nights.

o    Develop the SFS's annual budget and recommend allocations/reallocations for resources to support the recruitment and retention of a well-qualified and diverse student body.

o    Manage and utilize university endowments to offset discounted scholarships.

*         Financial Aid Program Planning, Development, and Implementation

o    Develop objectives to achieve long and short-range goals for the SFS department in support of the university's mission and values.

o    Plan, develop, coordinate, and direct student financial services initiatives and special projects.

o    Evaluate, implement, and execute all existing software as well as new and emerging electronic technologies as they relate to delivering student financial services for all constituents.

o    Research and identify additional student financial aid resources and opportunity for inclusion in the university's financial aid programs.

*         Team Management

o    Provide a learning environment for staff to promote cross training as well as excellent customer service.

o    Supervise a Student Financial Services staff of 13 employees (3 direct reports, 10 indirect reports) including recruitment, onboarding, performance management, and motivation to develop a cohesive and effective Student Financial Services team.

o    Develop and oversee departmental processes and procedures, professional development opportunities, training, goal-setting, departmental planning, and other relevant initiatives to provide staff members with a resources and support to result in optimal performance.

*         Collaboration

o    Coordinate with Financial Accounting Services on annual Fiscal Operations Report and Application to Participate (FISAP); prepare required financial aid information for submission.

o    Serve on Financial Aid Appeals Committee (evaluate requests for special condition, dependency overrides and Student Academic Progress (SAP) appeals), Admissions Financial Aid an Special Accommodations Committee, Undecided Committee and other committees as assigned.

o    Work with university technology in relation to financial data and reporting.

o    Be a source of strategic and innovative support for the Enrollment Services division.

o    interact effectively as a member of a team and work collectively with other departments.

o    Engage in professional development activities by attendance and participation in various financial aid organizations at the state, regional, and national level.

*         Other duties as assigned.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:


*         Mastery of applicable and relevant financial aid laws and regulations

*         Demonstrated knowledge of best practices in financial aid, student employment and student accounts.

*         Ability to interpret financial aid regulations and policy

*         Ability to evaluate, develop and implement financial aid programs, procedures, and policies designed to provide efficient, accurate, and strategic student financial services

*         Commitment to outstanding customer service to ensure high-quality delivery of financial aid assistance, programs, and support for students, parents, and other relevant constituents

*         Ability to communicate financial aid processes and procedures effectively to various constituents including students, parents, university employees and other parties

*         Technical fluency in common software applications as well as financial aid and higher education including Ellucian, COD, EDE, Connect, ED Express, Touch Net and Chip Net

*         Experience in staff supervision including performance evaluation, coaching, motivation, hiring, training, and other supervisory responsibilities

*         Knowledge of budgeting principles and processes to develop projections, analysis and other

*         Ability to think critically and logically, demonstrate professional judgment, problem solve and resolve conflicts

Physical Requirements:


*         Constantly operates a computer and other office machinery.

*         Constantly visually identifies, observes, and assesses.

*         Frequently communicates with university constituents.

*         Frequently remains in a stationary position (standing and/or sitting).  Occasionally moves to accomplish tasks and/or to get from one worksite to another.

*         Occasionally moves common office materials.

Working Conditions:


*         Standard office hours are 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.  However, variations will occur and overtime will be required.

*         Attendance at evening and weekend events is required.

*         Will be exposed to frequent noise caused by telephones and office machines.

*         Off-campus, state and regional travel is required.
