You may already be familiar with the Ronald McDonald House Charities and their mission to keep families close to each other and the care they need. The New Orleans Ronald McDonald House is a beautiful, homey, 15-bedroom house with a huge kitchen and dining room, two laundry areas, a toy room, two family relaxation areas and a living room—plenty of space for guests to make themselves at home and visit with each other. The social factor is vital; the emotional support and encouragement that the families give to each other is the most important aspect of the House. They share, listen and help one another maintain a positive outlook. Besides the house itself, the charity also has The Ronald McDonald House Comfort Cart that brings a touch of home to parents and siblings who are at the bedside of the pediatric patients at local pediatric care facilities. Their volunteers make their rounds through the pediatric floors with free coffee, soft drinks, bottled water, snacks, toiletries, and gifts for the families and patients. While parents and children alike appreciate having drinks and snacks without having to make a trip to a vending machine or to the coffee shop, “the little ones love the toys and stuffed animals, and the teens really appreciate the iTunes gift cards!” says volunteer Judi Russell. There are several ways to make a donation– * Monetary donation – bring your checkbook or donate on-line. * Amazon wish list – these items can be ordered on-line and shipped directly to RMDH. * Wish list items that you can bring/purchase while in NOLA. Criteria: The Awards Committee will review applications considering budgetary constraints, individual desire for professional growth, job responsibilities and attendance at previous SWASFAA conferences/training. All applicants must be from SWASFAA voting member institutions. Preference will be given to one recipient from each state. In case of unusual circumstances additional recipients could be considered upon recommendation from the committee to the Board. The number and amount of scholarships to award will be determined during the budget process upon recommendations to the Board by the Awards and Finance Committees. 3. Application Process: The applicant must complete the SWASFAA Professional Development Scholarship Application 4. Scholarship Application Deadline: Three months prior to conference and/or training. This allows one month for the committee to determine the scholarship recipients and notify each recipient. Qualifications: Required: * Bachelor's Degree * Sociology, Counseling, Psychology, Education or degree as determined by the department. * Two years' experience related to financial aid counseling. * Customer service experience working with students in a collegiate setting. * Experience working with the financial aid process or experience in personal finance. * Experience working in an online computer environment or with personal computer applications. * Strong interpersonal skills and excellent listening, verbal and written communication skills. * Ability to identify issues, investigate possible reasons/solutions, evaluate possible outcomes, and develop the most efficient and effective plan of action for each individual situation. * Sensitivity to the emotional nature of discussions related to finances, and the ability to balance requirements of federal, state, and institutional programs with concepts of customer service. * Because of the nature of the information available to this staff member, the employee must be able to incorporate the need for confidentiality of information into every aspect of the job. * Ability to work effectively with students who become angry or upset. * Must display a consistent attitude of customer service.
