your office to come and have FAFSA nights at their area high schools?  We
are having several requests for us to come for either an individually
planned night or for parent/teacher conference night in order to help
students/parents to fill out the FAFSA.  The request is that we will come
and work with each individual student/parent one on one to complete each of
their applications, resulting in a 3-4 hr time span in the evening.
Any information would be greatly appreciated, as we are a small office and
don't always have the time or the staff to send someone to help with each
individual student.

Good morning,

I do a variety of different things.  I will offer several FAFSA events on campus in our computer labs.  Sometimes I will run these during the day if I can have a team member step away that long, possibly a student worker will help facilitate or I will even handle it myself.  For instance we have an all-day FAFSA session tomorrow and Thursday here on campus. This is open to both on and off campus students and anyone from the community.  We make sure to post it on social media and share with all of our local school counselors.

In regards to the FAFSA events at schools.  We try to collaborate with admissions so that we are in attendance with them if possible.  We will sometimes offer a presentation and then FAFSA assistance for a couple of hours.  We will go out and just do a FAFSA event only, where we just offer up our time for a couple of hours to help. We don’t do one-on-ones because that is too time consuming.  We will have them all in one room and we will walk around and answer questions as need be.   We typically start with FSAID or request that students/parents complete those before attending the event.  We share this with the school counselors to at least get that part of the process out of the way before we arrive.  We  tell students a lot of times they can just come in and use the computers in our lobby area and we will answer questions if they need us.

I’ve found offering a FAFSA event/workshop between 3 and 5 sometimes helps too. This way it’s still during business hours, school is out and they can come to campus.

I do offer one-on-one FAFSA assistance in my office by appointment.  I’m also a big believer of sharing my cell phone information on my business card. I answer questions regarding FAFSA/financial aid via text, email and phone call also.

EVENT DETAILS:

For those who do not know me, I’m Shannon Guillory and I currently work for the Louisiana Community and Technical College System and assist financial aid offices around the state with Banner. This year I am fortunate to be one of SWASFAA’s Boot Camp trainers.

After working in financial aid for over 24 years now, I think the most difficult thing to manage is employee training. Whether it’s bringing your newest employee up to speed or making sure your veterans are complying with the ever-changing regulations, it is always difficult not only to find the time to do the training, but also to find the right person to conduct the training.

I know you’ve heard from a few of our committee members on how beneficial it is for new employees, but I’d like to share why it’s also important to send your veterans. When I first started in financial aid, I never understood why one of the FA Directors in the state would always attend LASFAA’s Boot Camp, every year! Once I got to know Mr. Raymond Boswell from Louisiana State University in Alexandria, I had the courage to ask him why, with all his years of experience, he always attended Boot Camp. He told me that in addition to it being a great refresher, he ALWAYS, ALWAYS learned something new. He was a great mentor and taught several of us that you never stop learning in financial aid.

SWASFAA Boot Camp is November 11-13 in New Orleans, LA and we’d love to see you there! The registration fee is $275 which may seem high until you realize that it includes trainings for 10 NASFAA Credential topics which normally cost around $99 per test. In case any of you are having difficulties with SWASFAA's new site, this might help answer your questions or clear up any problems you might have encountered so far. Many features have changed, and for the better! Here are some tips and tricks about accessing the full content of our site.

If you are a paid member of SWASFAA, the way to take the greatest advantage of the website is to click 'login' at the top when you first go to www.swasfaa.org. Only then, can you see member-only content such as a link to join our SWASFAA Listserv Google Group, Forum Discussions, our Membership Directory and recordings of past webinars. SWASFAA members can register for $275 and non-members can register for $375, but only if you register by tomorrow. Late registrations will increase by $100.

SWASFAA members can register for $375 and non-members can register for $475. The agenda includes training on 10 NASFAA credential topics, which means that attendees can take all 10 of those credential tests for no additional charge, networking opportunities with your colleagues, and best practices from the Boot Camp Committee.
