EVENT DETAILS:

For those who do not know me, I’m Shannon Guillory and I currently work for the Louisiana Community and Technical College System and assist financial aid offices around the state with Banner. This year I am fortunate to be one of SWASFAA’s Boot Camp trainers.

After working in financial aid for over 24 years now, I think the most difficult thing to manage is employee training. Whether it’s bringing your newest employee up to speed or making sure your veterans are complying with the ever-changing regulations, it is always difficult not only to find the time to do the training, but also to find the right person to conduct the training.

I know you’ve heard from a few of our committee members on how beneficial it is for new employees, but I’d like to share why it’s also important to send your veterans. When I first started in financial aid, I never understood why one of the FA Directors in the state would always attend LASFAA’s Boot Camp, every year! Once I got to know Mr. Raymond Boswell from Louisiana State University in Alexandria, I had the courage to ask him why, with all his years of experience, he always attended Boot Camp. He told me that in addition to it being a great refresher, he ALWAYS, ALWAYS learned something new. He was a great mentor and taught several of us that you never stop learning in financial aid.

SWASFAA Boot Camp is November 11-13 in New Orleans, LA and we’d love to see you there! The registration fee is $275 which may seem high until you realize that it includes trainings for 10 NASFAA Credential topics which normally cost around $99 per test. We know you may not be interested in taking 10, but even if you just take 3 it is a cost-savings!! The hotel and early bird registration dates has been extended through October 18, so register today!

I see so many folks who attended the Boot Camps I’ve assisted with in the past who are now Directors and Assistant Directors and even serving in leadership positions in their state and regional associations.  I hope you take advantage of this wonderful training opportunity which will also provide you with colleagues, and maybe even a few new friends, for life.
