[Oasfaa] Student Teachers

Following is an initial statement released last Friday by Chancellor Johnson about this initiative (a copy of the letter from SDE is attached).  More information will be forthcoming.

Subject:          Compensation for Pre-Service Teachers

As you may know, Superintendent Hofmeister issued a letter on May 27, 2021 to Oklahoma Educator Preparation Programs indicating that the Oklahoma State Department of Education was investing federal relief dollars to compensate pre-service teachers for their work as student teachers, beginning in the 2021-2022 school year. A copy of the letter is attached for your review.

Our understanding is that the funding source will be through the Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief (ESSER) Fund of the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021 – Section 2001 (ARP ESSER/ESSER III).

State Regents staff have been in communication with the Oklahoma State Department of Education on this partnership, and we are in the process of finalizing details for the program.  To implement the program, State Regents staff will work closely with institutions to determine guidance and processes for disbursement.

I am not sure, they are calling the first half a scholarship and the second part a stipend.  They also made it pretty clear that they are sending it to the financial aid office which makes me think they may be wanting us to count some or all of it.

I would be interested in hearing your thought on how this should be handle.  Would only the first $1,625 be counted as aid in the students package?

Hopefully we will get some guidance from OSRHE in the near future.
