This error could result in a lower Expected Family Contribution (EFC) and a higher Pell Grant award for students who would not otherwise be eligible. The notice recommends aid administrators identify all instances of $1 AGIs for filers in 2022-23 FAFSA cycle, and follow-up with applicants to resolve the issue as needed. The new tool causing these errors was launched after the filing season and has several warnings on the landing page and inside the tool to educate taxpayers prior to using it, the notice added. (HSC)) Date: Mon, 4 Oct 2021 18:57:51 +0000 Subject: [Oasfaa] Unaccompanied homeless youth Message-ID: On our campus, we rarely - OK, almost never - have the situation arise in which a student indicates homeless or at risk of homelessness. However, we have one now. It is his first semester with us, and the student is a dependent student and we have a valid ISIR in which the parents' information is present, and we awarded aid based upon that. The student, however, has submitted a new ISIR transaction in which he self-identified as at risk of homelessness. All we have so far is a written statement, from the student to my office, in which he details the series of terrible circumstances that have befallen his family and him in the last 18 or so months. They have all led to parents' inability to help him, his couch surfing due to an inability to afford rent (or sleeping in his car), an inability to repair his car, and the list goes on. If his circumstances are true, I obviously don't want to create an obstacle for him. However, with the information we have so far, it sounds unlikely that we will be able to obtain a verification of his status from a third party as listed in GEN 15-16 or the Handbook. GEN 15-16 states that we are required to make a homeless youth determination when the request is made. However, I need to know what documentation you might have gathered if this situation has arisen on your campus. Like I said, at the moment, all I have at the moment is the student's handwritten statement. I have a call into the College's Student Affairs contact, but beyond that, I don't know what will be considered sufficient but not a barrier to the student. If I have no way to validate his status, but this request is made by the student with the new ISIR, do I still forge ahead with the ISIR correction since the language states "FAAS are required..."? Any suggestions? Regulatory changes for PSLF are anticipated to come through the ongoing negotiated rulemaking process in tandem with actions taken and announced by ED through its emergency authority that aim to reimagine the program and how it operates for those working in the public service sector. Oops! They were notified through NSLDS transfer monitoring process and reached out to us. We hadn't flagged her as needing to be added to the transfer monitoring as she was a readmit who got her undergrad with us, and we weren't aware she was starting classes somewhere else at the same time she was coming to our institution. Is transfer monitoring the only way to catch these? What practices do you all have in place to catch these type of situations? This is the first time in the last 7 years that I've seen it happen, so hopefully it's just a one off! Thanks in advance! According to FSA, once the Fiscal Operations Report and Application to Participate (FISAP) is submitted through the Common Origination and Disbursement (COD) System by Oct. 1, 2021, the Department of Education (ED) will notify institutions that have cash in the institution's Perkins Fund subject to the distribution of assets process. NASFAA has previously advocated for ED to reimburse institutions for canceled Perkins Loans, a recommendation that was eventually implemented following efforts from a coalition of higher education associations. Time to file the 2022-2023 FAFSA! Application open now at fafsa.gov!
