From danielle.wellman at okbu.edu Tue Jul 5 16:52:41 2022 From: danielle.wellman at okbu.edu (Danielle Wellman) Date: Tue, 5 Jul 2022 21:52:41 +0000 Subject: [Oasfaa] SAP Appeal Scenario In-Reply-To: References: Message-ID: We have a unique situation with one of our students. He is a former vet who struggles with PTSD and a lot of mental health issues. He has failed SAP on multiple occasions with obvious reason to appeal. Our policy states that a student may appeal multiple times, but it must be for a new reason. For him, we have approved more than one appeal based on him providing new plans for treatment, types of therapy, etc. that were intended to help him better succeed. He has failed once again and is looking to appeal another time. As you can imagine, this becomes a very sensitive situation as we do not want to deny his appeal, but it is becoming less apparent that he will ever be able to successfully meet SAP or complete his degree. We have attempted communicating with his rep at the VA. At one point a contact there was going to counsel him around other options, but the next thing we knew he was reaching out and planning to enroll again, with his VA Voc Rehab reps support. Has anyone experienced a situation like this? Do we have grounds to continue to approve his appeal or is it our obligation to deny it? The last thing we want to do is deny an appeal for a veteran, but just aren't sure at what point we can no longer approve these requests. He has reached the point now where he is failing SAP for all three categories - max timeframe, GPA, and completion rate. The student has made threats to contact political officials if we deny his requests, so we are trying to be sure we handle this carefully, but correctly.
