[Oasfaa] SAP Policy

We had some recent degree plan changes that warrant an update to our MAX timeframe in our SAP policy. While updating this, I'm looking at updating a few other things. I wondered if I could get some input on the following. We have seen a few more inquiries for appeals on the max timeframe, and I feel like it is such a difficult one to define "mitigating circumstances" on. I have read the regs and it is clear that you CAN appeal max timeframe, but there is not much guidance on reasons that should be approved and it's really up to the school.

  1.  Do you allow appeals for max timeframe?
  2.  If yes, what are some examples of allowable appeals for your institution?
  3.  Would your policy allow for approval in a "young and dumb" type of situation -  For example, the student failed many hours straight out of high school, took some time off, and now wants to come back as a mature/more responsible student. Sort of a second chance type scenario.

To provide context, we typically only approve appeals for things like physical or mental health issues, hospitalizations, traumatic experiences, death in the family, etc. Things obviously outside of the students control. These are easily applied to GPA and hours appeals, but not so easily to max timeframe, as it obviously takes a while for a student to hit max timeframe.

Any feedback on how you approach this as I look at updating our policy is appreciated!
