Subject: SB 559

Counselors,

As you all know, SB 559 created statutory exemptions to ACE graduation requirements. It allows students to be exempt from taking EOIs in Geometry, English III, Algebra II and U.S. History if:

· Students who score ten percent (10%) above the cut scores approved by the State Board of Education for the American College Testing Program (ACT), the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT), or Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT) alternate tests shall be deemed to have satisfactorily demonstrated mastery of state academic content standards in the subject areas for which alternative tests have been approved and shall be exempt from taking the end-of-instruction criterion-referenced tests in the subject areas of Algebra II, English III, Geometry or United States History.

· Students who have a score that is equal to or above the cut scores approved by the State Board of Education for the Advanced Placement course exams, ACT WorkKeys job skills assessment, College-Level Examination Program (CLEP) or International Baccalaureate (IB) alternate tests shall be deemed to have satisfactorily demonstrated mastery of state academic content standards in the subject areas for which alternate tests have been approved and shall be exempt from taking the end-of-instruction criterion-referenced tests in the subject areas of Algebra II, English III, Geometry or United States History.

The link below will take you to the approved alternate assessments and cut scores. The first four pages are the scores needed in order to apply the alternate assessment after a student has either…. attempted the EOI once (second time test taker) or has moved into your district from out of state/homeschool/private school and has already completed instruction in the EOI tested subject. Page 5 and 6 have the scores needed in order to be exempt from taking the EOI.

SB 559 also states that the exempt scores will be counted for district grades. The above Excel spreadsheet was created to assist you in tracking students that meet the exemption law. Our Office of Accountability and Assessment will need these for next year’s calculations. An application will be created for districts to submit this information in the spring.

Thanks for all you do!!!! Please let me know if you have any questions.
