Subject: Announcing the FREE Open eBooks program for low-income schools

All,

I am thrilled to announce an amazing opportunity for students. Open eBooks is a new e-reader app that will make thousands of popular, top-selling eBooks available to children in low-income homes for FREE. The initiative offers unprecedented access to quality digital content, including a catalog of eBooks valued at more than $250 million.

The Open eBooks app is available through Title I and Title I eligible schools as well as libraries, preschools, and community after school programs serving a minimum of 70 percent students from low-income households. The program will also be available through schools and programs serving children whose families are enlisted in the armed forces, or serving special needs children.

See the website for more information, including instructions for signing up--http://openebooks.net/

Press release: http://openebooks.net/OpenEbooksPressRelease.pdf

Please help me spread the word to other organizations, schools, and districts.

Thank you!

Best,

Alice Anne Bailey, Ph.D.

Subject: Open eBooks Follow Up

Dear Colleagues:

Thank you for joining today's call. We are looking forward to Wednesday's launch of the Open eBooks app-by its team of literacy, library, publisher, and technology organizations (see openebooks.net for more information), and appreciate the work of these non-governmental organizations in support of the ConnectED initiative. We would ask that you do not share this information until 7:30am ET tomorrow, Wednesday, February 24.

This message provides information about what the White House is doing to highlight and amplify the launch, and we thought it would be useful to coordinate communications for maximum impact. Please note, this information remains off the record and should not be shared outside of your organization.

Timing: There will be a press preview of the app on the night of Tuesday, February 23rd. A story may appear that night or the following morning. To preserve the news value of your announcement, we ask that you please hold on pitching any stories or posting anything to your organization's website or social media accounts prior to Wednesday, February 24th, at 7:30 a.m. EST.

White House Amplification: At 7:30am EST Wednesday morning, the White House will post a video of the First Lady discussing the app. We encourage you to disseminate your press releases and amplify your involvement in the Open eBooks and the broader ConnectED initiative at that time.

Social Media: We will be promoting the announcement with the hashtag #OpeneBooks and #ConnectED, starting on Wednesday at 7:30 am ET. The White House will be posting the announcement on its social media channels (@WhiteHouse on Twitter, White House on Facebook, Tumblr and Instagram). To build support around the announcement, associations, publishers, and other influencers can tweet their support, highlighting the announcement in their own words, particularly on Twitter and Facebook, or by retweeting @WhiteHouse. To mention the President, please use @POTUS [Note: @BarackObama is a political account not affiliated with the White House, so we will not be able to engage with posts that mention it from White House accounts.] To mention First Lady Michelle Obama, please use @FLOTUS.

Communications Coordination: To help coordinate day-of press, please contact the Open eBooks Team:

Digital Public Library of America: Kenny Whitebloom, kenny at dp.la<mailto:kenny at dp.la>

New York Public Library: Nora Lyons, noralyons at nypl.org<mailto:noralyons at nypl.org>

First Book: Becki Last, blast at firstbook.org<mailto:blast at firstbook.org>

Materials Review: We'd be happy to review any press releases or blog posts you plan to issue in advance of you posting these materials. Please send any materials you plan to post to: Hannah_R_Hankins at who.eop.gov<mailto:Hannah_R_Hankins at who.eop.gov>

Thanks again for your support and we look forward to this exciting announcement.

Best,

Katharine Gallogly
