OCAP has two exciting college access initiatives to tell you about. * Just this week, the Oklahoma College Assistance Program (OCAP) announced a new FAFSA promotional tool designed to introduce the FAFSA, addressing basic questions such as "What is it?" and "Why should I submit one?" We hope that this simple tool will help to ensure that high school seniors will see the importance of completing the FAFSA before it becomes available October 1. If you're not able to print a copy of the FASFA flyer for each senior, please consider posting a few copies around the school. You may also want to share the information during a senior meeting or assembly. Contact the OCAP Outreach Team: 405.234.4239 | 866.443.7420 (toll free) if you have questions. * Have you registered your school for College Application Week (CAW)? So far, participating schools have reported that over 7,500 seniors will have the opportunity to submit at least one online college application during CAW. Here are some frequently asked questions: What if I'm unable to host CAW during the 'official' week of September 23-27, 2019? Feel free to schedule your CAW any week from now through November 29, 2019. What if I'd rather not plan a whole week's worth of activities? CAW activities can be scheduled for only one day if that's what works out best for your school. Plan for one day, or any amount of days during your designated week. The major objective is to ensure that every senior is given the chance to submit an application. What if I'm from a GEAR UP school? If your school is receiving GEAR UP IV grant funds, contact your GEAR UP program coordinator. You do not need to register for OCAP's College App Week. Where do I start? Register and find all the planning resources you need at OKCollegeAppWeek.org. Enrolled participants will receive free promotional posters, and an 'I Applied' sticker for each senior who submits an online application. There are three conference calls scheduled for participants who'd like to ask questions or share their success with others. Click the call you'd like to join below. You'll receive a reminder and instructions for joining the call a week before your call. Thursday, Sept. 5, 1:00 pm Wednesday, Sept. 11, 10:00 am Tuesday, Sept. 17, 10:00 am Questions? Her passionate belief that all learners deserve a voice in this world and outstanding teachers to foster their growth is reflected in her scholarship on dialogue as pedagogy, diverse perspectives in literature for children and young adults, and teacher preparation. Dr. Parsons spends many hours in public schools as the director of OSU-ExCEL, a full-year mentor program for teacher candidates, and as a professional development facilitator. A strong believer in the power of literature to transform lives, she is the President of the International Literacy Association Children's Literature and Reading Special Interest Group and has served on a variety of book award committees including the ILA Children's and Young Adult Book Award, the Orbis Pictus Award for Outstanding Nonfiction for Children, and Notable Books for a Global Society. Most recently she was selected and served as a jurist for the 2019 Lee Bennet Hopkins Poetry Award. Dr. Parsons has received a variety of teaching honors including the OSU Regent's Distinguished Teaching Award (twice awarded), the Mortar Board Golden Torch Award, the OSU College of Education Teaching Excellence Award, the OSU Outstanding Service-Learning Faculty Award, and OSU Faculty Teaching Fellow. In addition to educating future teachers, her scholarship includes teacher education, literacy instruction, and children's literature. Collaborating with her fabulous Oklahoma colleagues, she has presented at conferences in the United States, Sweden, Estonia, South Korea, and Spain. She is lucky enough to have the opportunity to read with kindergartners each week at Positive Tomorrows, a school for children who are homeless. Liz has been a nose-twitching reader since second grade and can be found losing herself in books at home, at work, and even in public places. For the past few years, she has been exploring philosophy with children based on picture books, and she'll share her learning with the audience. Schools that will use fee waivers should place an order at https://readiness.act.org. Go to the ACT Support Materials link and select the number of fee waivers you will use. Materials typically arrive about 1 week after the order is processed, you will see information on expected delivery when you place the order. It's just like going to order your PreACT but you will click on ACT Support Materials instead, this is what it looks like: [cid:image001.jpg at 01D55EAD.FABC1140] You can also order the ACT College Readiness Standard's Posters for your teachers' classrooms (we used to have these awhile back) math and science-STEM and ELA, at the same place you order the fee waivers. These posters have the score bands for the ACT Standards, very helpful! I have attached the information that was sent out in July.
