He would like to make a presentation to a group of folks that might be interested in using the grants component of the software for your institutional grant records. If you are interested, let me know so we can set up a video conference or teleconference and web presentation. I asked if there was a cost to use the software, and he responded with yes. The cost would be to customize the grant management system to your institution. Look forward to hearing from you. Linda Mason, Ed.D. This workshop is primarily designed for researchers and educators less experienced in proposing to the NSF; however, more experienced proposers and NSF grantees may well find the workshop useful and informative. It is our hope that events such as this will stimulate new interest in NSF programs at institutions that have not been among our traditional customers, as well as at premier research institutions. We want to extend an invitation to you and to anyone else at your institution who would like to attend this workshop and learn more about the NSF and its programs. The workshop will provide an overview of the Foundation, its mission, priorities, and budget. It will cover the NSF proposal and merit review process and NSF programs that cut across disciplines. Additionally, representatives from the seven NSF directorates, the Office of International Science and Engineering, and the Office of Integrative Activities will make presentations on their programs and will also be available informally and in breakout sessions for discussions of potential research proposals. The workshop will be held at Helmerich Hall, Collins College of Business, on The University of Tulsa campus in Tulsa. There is no registration fee for this workshop. You can register on the NSF website using the link below. Please register by Friday, December 21, 2012. Registration is limited, so please register early. We hope to see you there. Maybe something to do with ethics training for undergraduates????? Message-ID: Survey shows dishonesty among U.S. students drops in 2012 By CATHY PAYNE USA TODAY Tulsa World 11/26/2012 Are American students making the grade when it comes to ethics? A survey from the Josephson Institute of Ethics finds that the portion of high school students who admit to cheating, lying or stealing dropped in 2012 for the first time in a decade. The reasons aren't known, but the results of the poll of 23,000 high school students give leaders of the organization hope. The survey is "a pretty good sign that things may be turning around," said Michael Josephson, the founder and president of the Los Angeles-based institute. "I'm quite optimistic this is the beginning of a downward trend." Among the highlights from the survey, which is conducted every two years: Students who said they had cheated on an exam in the past year plunged from 59 percent in 2010 to 51 percent in 2012. The number of students who said they lied to a teacher in the past year about something significant fell from 61 percent in 2010 to 55 percent in 2012. In 2010, 27 percent of pupils said they had stolen from a store in the past year. In 2012, 20 percent said they did so. One reason for the decline may be more attention to character. "Changes in children's behavior of this magnitude suggest a major shift in parenting and school involvement in issues of honesty and character," Josephson said. The survey found boys are more likely than girls to engage in dishonest conduct. Forty-five percent of boys believe that "a person has to lie and cheat at least occasionally sometimes in order to succeed" compared with 28 percent of girls. Boys might also be more aggressive and competitive, said David Walsh, a developmental psychologist in Minneapolis. "We want our sons to be able to channel that energy in a positive direction," said Walsh, the author of the books "Smart Parenting, Smarter Kids" and "Why Do They Act That Way?" "Some boys end up being leaders and being outstanding." Linda Mason, Ed.D. The Pre-award unit of our Sponsored Programs office has recently discussed the need for requiring letters of support/commitment for proposals specifying a specific vendor on Service or Consulting Agreements. For NIFA, NSF and NIH the letters are typically required and include # of hours, rate of pay, a small scope of work and the signature of the designated party. We are questioning whether to make the letter a requirement for all proposals with Service/Consulting Agreements. Does anyone require these letters at the pre-award stage even if the sponsor does not explicitly ask for them to be included in the proposal package (ex: National Park Service, US Forest Service)? If so, and if you are willing to share, what is your methodology and/or policy for this? Thank you in advance, Sarah Martonick Sponsored Programs Administrator University of Idaho Office of Sponsored Programs 875 Perimeter Drive, MS 3020 Morrill Hall 103 Moscow ID 83844-3020 (208) 885-6270 smartonick at uidaho.edu Linda Mason, Ed.D. An agreement among the four entities resulted in establishing the Oklahoma Proof of Concept Center, which will identify compelling technologies discovered on OU and OSU campuses and help successfully spin them off into startup or existing companies. The virtual center unifies the expertise from the entities into a focused effort that will answer critical questions that challenge any technology-based startup. Products are accelerated to the marketplace through coordinating efforts to validate markets, developing customer driven prototypes, obtaining guidance and feedback from industry mentors and providing access to capital necessary. "It is more important now than ever that our state's universities and state agencies work together to provide greater access to resources for our students," said University of Oklahoma President David L. Boren. "This collaboration will allow our citizens to create technology-based jobs and grow our state's economy with the commercialization of Oklahoma innovation." The Oklahoma Proof of Concept Center is designed to help find the shortest path to convert technology into prototypes by leveraging the combined resources and expertise. Organizers of the effort say it will result in more spinoffs from Oklahoma research institutions and more productive, sustainable ventures positioned for both capital investment and market acceptance. "This collaboration offers the opportunity to join forces and enter the marketplace with technologies that create new and exciting solutions that benefit our state and the world," said Oklahoma State University President Burns Hargis. While a university-based proof-of-concept center is not unique, organizers of the Oklahoma Proof of Concept Center said it takes an innovative cross-state approach that includes multiple regional entities working together. "With the united effort that the Proof of Concept Center represents, we expect to see spinouts from our campuses to increase in both number and success reaching the marketplace," said Steve Wood, chief executive officer at Cowboy Technologies. i2E and Cowboy Technologies both contribute expertise in business development and market research, as well as expanded access to sources of capital. "The beauty of this collective approach is that we aren't duplicating or adding infrastructure to the technology transfer process," said Rex Smitherman, interim president and chief executive officer of i2E. "We're sharing and leveraging our individual resources to move innovative technologies from the laboratory to the marketplace to increase deal flow." Linda Mason, Ed.D.
