This year?s conference will focus on the final step in this process?the presentation and publication of undergraduate research. The conference will be organized into three panel presentations; please consider joining the Presenting Undergraduate Research or Publishing Undergraduate Research panels by proposing a brief presentation (approximately 15-20 minutes) aligned with the respective themes identified below: 1. Undergraduate Researchers ? The conference steering committee has identified undergraduates representing all tiers of higher education who will share their perspectives on presenting and publishing their research. We are not seeking additional students for this panel. 2. Presenting Undergraduate Research: If you have experience organizing presentation opportunities?e.g. research symposia?or have helped students prepare research presentations, please consider joining this panel to share your insight. We are looking for novel and/or effective approaches designed to encourage students to present their research in a wide variety of contexts. 3. Publishing Undergraduate Research: If you have co-authored research with undergraduates or assisted students in the preparation of their own publications, please consider joining this panel to share your insight. We are looking for novel and/or effective approaches designed to encourage students to publish their research in a wide variety of contexts. Selection Criteria ? The Steering Committee will select proposals considering the broadest representation of undergraduate research models from across the state. We aim to include a wide range of disciplines from the natural and social sciences to the humanities and arts. We are not looking for proposals about individual students? research projects. Presentation at the Promoting Undergraduate Research Conference ? Panels will be approximately 120 minutes in length with part of the time set aside for questions and dialogue. Presentations may include PowerPoint slides for visual support of major concepts and findings. Projectors and computers will be provided. Each panelist will have approximately 15-30 minutes for their presentation depending on the number of panelists selected for each panel. Guidelines: Presentation proposals must? ? Be submitted by email to Dr. Linda Mason (lmason at osrhe.edu) no later than March 4, 2013. To do so, you may use the Presentation Submission Form ? Contain no more than 100 words. ? Identify the name, address, phone number, e-mail address, institutional affiliation (college/university), and emergency contact of the presenter. ? Include a one-paragraph biography of the presenter. ? Specify the target panel: ? Presenting Undergraduate Research (10:00 a.m.) ? Publishing Undergraduate Research (1:30 p.m.) ? Indicate if you need a computer/projector. Note: ? Selection carries the obligation of presenting. ? Presenters must register for the conference; registration is $50 for faculty/students and $75 for administrators?POs, checks and cash are acceptable. ? Those not selected for a panel may be asked to present a poster; please indicate if you have a preference for an oral or poster presentation only. ? A selection committee of the Undergraduate Research Conference Steering Committee will review proposals and select panelists for the conference with notification by March 12, 2013. Each team of innovators is supported by a broader community of interested citizens throughout the country. The 1st round of five projects was launched in August 2012 with 18 inaugural Fellows. You can learn more about the accomplishments to date of the MyUSA (formerly known as MyGov), RFP-EZ, Blue Button, Better Than Cash, and Open Data Initiatives Fellows through the blog posts of each team. The 2nd round of the Presidential Innovation Fellows program will include nine projects, described on the website - four that are the second phases of Round 1 projects and five new projects.. Presidential Innovation Fellows have a unique opportunity to serve our Nation and make an impact on a truly massive scale. We will be accepting applications to be a Round 2 Fellow from February 5th through March 17th, and are looking to put together a dynamic, diverse, innovative class that will produce tremendous results for the American people. To encourage innovative research from across the globe, Digging into Data is sponsored by ten international research funding organizations that are working together to focus the attention of the social sciences, humanities, library, archival, information, computer, mathematical, and statistical science communities on large-scale data analysis and its potential applications. Applicants will form international teams from at least two of the participating countries. Winning teams will receive grants from two or more of the funding agencies and, two years later, will be invited to show off their work at a special conference sponsored by the ten funders. In this third round of the competition the funders encourage projects that address some of the findings from the earlier rounds. See http://www.clir.org/pubs/reports/pub151. Assisting faculty in building these relationships within our institutions and across institutions is challenging and necessary for success of research and education programs. On March 11-13, 2013, the University of Oklahoma, in cooperation with the Minority Serving Institutions Research Partnership Consortium (MSIRPC), is hosting the 2nd Annual MSI-OIHE Symposium. This symposium is open to faculty at MSIs as well as faculty from non-minority serving institutions. We would like to encourage you to invite your faculty (all disciplines) to attend to meet colleagues from a variety of institutions for the express purpose of building new partnerships and collaborations. We also had several NORDP members in attendance last year and you are certainly welcome to attend this year and bring back information to your faculty. The general idea is that both defense and discretionary funding will be cut equally. We may see 20% cuts in discretionary grant funding. I will watch for more specific agency notices about what to expect. Linda Mason, Ed.D. If an agreement is not reached by the end of this month, the President will be required to issue an order on March 1, 2013 that will implement across-the-board spending cuts known as sequestration. As a result of this expected sequestration order, the Fiscal Year (FY) 2013 appropriations of the National Science Foundation (NSF) will be reduced by 5 percent. We intend to make the necessary FY 2013 reductions with as little disruption as possible to established commitments, and are using the following set of core principles to guide our sequestration planning activities: * Protect commitments to NSF's core mission and maintain existing awards; * Protect the NSF workforce; and * Protect STEM human capital development programs. By adhering to these core principles and the government-wide guidance issued by the Office of Management and Budget (OMB), Memorandum 13-03, Planning for Uncertainty with Respect to Fiscal Year 2013 Budgetary Resources, we expect to be able to accommodate the sequestration reductions in ways that minimize, to the extent possible, the impact on our mission, both short- and long-term. Because the sequestration order takes effect at mid-year, its impact is somewhat greater than might otherwise be the case. At NSF, the major impact of sequestration will be seen in reductions to the number of new research grants and cooperative agreements awarded in FY 2013. We anticipate that the total number of new research grants will be reduced by approximately 1,000. In keeping with the first core principle listed above, and to assure continuity and minimize disruption of scientific research, all continuing grant increments in FY 2013 will be awarded, as scheduled, and there will be no impact on existing NSF standard grants. The same intent applies to annual increments for cooperative agreements, though overall funding constraints may require reductions to certain major investments. These will be handled on a case-by-case basis. It is also important to advise you that the Foundation is currently operating under a Continuing Resolution (CR) that will expire on March 27, 2013. Once NSF has appropriations in place beyond March 27th, we will revise this notice as necessary. While DoD gets 50% of the total cut, the other 50% is distributed across all other areas of discretionary funding. For example, NSF is expecting a 5% decrease in its funding, NIH is expecting a cut http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/notice-files/NOT-OD-13-043.html. and ED has said it expects 8%. In other words, the non-defense cuts are spread over many agencies. A lot of "sky is falling" hype coming out of the White House, but the cuts amount to about 2% of the annual budget.
